In fact, it was the most honest thing I witnessed in the three-plus-hour broadcast. That was the decision by Amazon's production truck to show a half-dozen-or-so replays of Tua's injury that included some high-def closeups. This was honest sports television, the violence of pro football unvarnished. It was painful and uncomfortable to watch. But it was real."

Also, as every horse racing fan knows: "The NFL has always come with an inherent tension as a viewer. The sport is thrilling, a near-perfect television experience, but those who play it suffer for our escapism."

And I am not typically tolerant of institutions that don't treat their employees well. I'm not proud of the compromises I make for football, and I'm not sure I understand how I'm able to make them. My colleague Jay Caspian Kang offered an explanation earlier this year in a column. 'The way we watch football today feels like a capitulation that's interesting because of how common this kind of giving in has become in modern life,' he wrote. And I think that's it — I have indeed capitulated. And I will continue to watch football because I love it. I love it the way you love a terrible relative or a bad boyfriend or girlfriend — because that love has entangled me in its web. And, honestly, I don't want to escape."

The general crisis has something to do with America's racial history, the twinned rise of Silicon Valley tech wizardry and neoliberal technocrats, the spectacular dimming of our attention spans, and maybe even the decline of the countryside. The specific crises flash and vanish from month to month across SportsCenter's busy night sky: labor contracts, steroids, sign-stealing, ball-tampering, showboating, and needless but joyful late-inning blowout home runs. These minor crises are fleeting, even if they relate, sometimes in subterranean and sometimes in straightforward ways, to the larger senescence looming overhead — of which, as far as I’m aware, there exists only one compelling account."

1. Industry execs expect significant moves from Facebook — which hasn't hidden its hankering for sports. Earlier this month, the company hired Peter Hutton, CEO of Discovery-owned Eurosport, to lead its negotiating team for live-streaming sports deals, sources confirmed to Variety. He's expected to join Facebook after the conclusion of the Winter Olympics. Hutton comes aboard after embarking on a search to recruit a sports dealmaker who will have "a few billion dollars" to vie for global rights deals, according to a Sports Business Journal report. Meanwhile, the social giant last fall entered a $600 million bid for five-year rights to Indian Premier League cricket matches, ultimately losing to Star India (which bid $2.6 billion for TV and streaming rights).

2. The other key opportunity for Twitter is to stake a claim on less popular sports that aren't widely available on TV. "We know that on Twitter if you care about the WNBA, the NWHL, lacrosse, cycling or fencing, we can serve those audiences well," says Noto.

3. Not everyone believes exclusive live sports really are a long-term strategic fit for the likes of Amazon or Facebook ... There's a natural framework for sports rights, he says: "Long term, I just don't see technology companies — the FANG [Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google] group — really doubling down on all these rights." That's especially true, Gandler adds, given that Amazon can see a higher return by acquiring a real asset like Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, as opposed to renting sports rights for a couple billion dollars over a few years.

4. To ESPN's Magnus, the world is a long way from streaming platforms being the exclusive solution for leagues and other rights holders. He views tech companies as the latest team of competitors, and notes that ESPN has long faced well-funded rivals ... "I first heard of a 'sports-rights bubble' 15 years ago."

From a young age girls are told to not make trouble, and if those girls yearn for a career in sports they might as well write that adage on the back of their hand. Forget your dignity, keep your head down and you’ll get along fine. If you're extremely lucky you might even go an entire season without an incident that demeans or belittles you, makes you feel as if you barely exist. At our clever Algonquin Round Table of sports we toasted the intrepid young women who were following in our Converse and stilettos, and we gave thanks that they would have it a bit easier.

"While the timing and deal-making may be uncertain, the future of the product experience is less so. Just as the rest of the media business is shifting from a model based on windowing (placing content across various channels and slots to maximize value), to one based on price discrimination (users choose among varied options, some deeper, some shallower), so too will sports. The future isn’t one offering; it’s many. There will be a sports package of national interest that cuts across the major sporting events, and regional bundles focused on teams with significant audience overlap, akin to today’s RSNs (but sold both a la carte and as part of new digital bundles). Given the cross-sport nature of these offerings, they will likely be delivered by an aggregator instead of leagues and will likely be bundled with other digital offerings (and not just other video content; think Amazon Prime). Hardcore fans will be able to subscribe to deep single-league experiences likely sold direct to consumer. They’ll also be able to buy deep single-team experiences. These will be packaged via various digital distribution channels and sold at various price points."

[See also, 3/27/17: "When will sports rights become a digital-first property? News that TWITTER, FACEBOOK, AMAZON, and YOUTUBE are bidding for NFL Thursday night games isn't groundbreaking. Twitter won those rights in 2016 and the user experience was unsatisfying -- watching the games on my phone meant I couldn't also see my timeline. The big news will be when the NFL or NBA or MLB or NHL finds a digital home with a tech company that can create a true home for experiencing games. As progressive as these leagues are, they are still thinking TV-first. That's where they get their big money from, but that will change at some point."]

It was at $3.5 billion in June when ESPN was reported as buying a one-third stake, which would have been over $1.1 billion, but the price is now apparently down to $1 billion as per ESPN’s release. That seems like a very smart deal for ESPN, considering that BAM Tech is involved with streaming everything from HBO Now to the NHL, the PGA Tour and the WWE Network and that they already provide the infrastructure for Watch ESPN; it’s also notable that ESPN has the option to buy a majority stake in BAM Tech down the road. This does appear to link ESPN even more closely with Major League Baseball, though, and suggests they won’t be able to try saying they don’t want MLB contracts going forward."

Fantasy sports, particularly fantasy football, have long been a part of the American mainstream, with its workplace leagues, online drafts and fantasy-roster specials on ESPN. The search went on for a few more years until, eventually, just one box score remained — a game during the first season of the BAA between the St. Louis Bombers and Detroit Falcons. Traveling with his wife on business to Lansing, Pfander used a bit of free time to make his way to a state library. He can’t remember the paper, but while cranking the dial of the microfilm viewer, he scrolled just past what he knew was a box score. Like that, almost half a century’s worth of work was done. The first part of ESPN’s Push strategy is a constantly updating column of digital news, called ESPN Now, which runs along the right-hand side of the homepage and has its own section in the ESPN app. The Now column is a stream of short-form content, including breaking news, notable quotes and tweets from athletes and reporters, memorable moments, and infographics from ESPN’s TV shows. It is, essentially, a Twitter feed, by turns silly and news-breaking, cascading down ESPN’s homepage. On some days, the Now feed flows leisurely and doesn’t add much to the experience of the ESPN homepage. But when during a major event—for example, during a draft, or when several high-profile games are happening at once—it is a relentless, even indispensable, waterfall of updates and reactions that allows the homepage to update at the speed of news."

And why would they? One of the main reasons Deflate-gate has been such a manageable, delightful story for the NFL is because it is easily processed as an on-field issue: Maybe the Patriots cheated, or maybe they didn't; your perspective depends entirely on whatever biases you walked into the room with in the first place. There isn't much complexity to it. The other issues this year have been a lot tougher. Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, concussion lawsuits. They all are off-the-field issues -- in the case of concussions, the NFL might be glad that it can be considered an 'off-the-field' issue -- that are easily shrugged away, temporarily or permanently forgotten, once the games begin again. Those who distract from the game? They're just troublemakers. They're part of the 'pack journalism.' They're not what really matter."

"Sports leagues are trying to effectuate an end run around the precedent in at least three ways. First, they are investing in their own analytics infrastructure. The NBA is a leader in this field, as evidenced by its move to install motion-tracking cameras in every arena and create a vast statistical database for media and fans. By doing so, the NBA will be able to more forcefully posit that it is a direct competitor of a company offering a service similar to Motorola. Two, numerous sports leagues are making a huge push into the lucrative and data-rich fantasy sports space. This calculated move arose after Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006 and included a narrow carve-out for fantasy sports. Third, some leagues have moved to partner with former courtroom adversaries. Who is the NBA’s collaborator in connection with the high-tech cameras? None other than STATS."

The first is that the N.F.L. is working hard to make the game safer, which is flimsy at best. The league spent years denying that the game was causing neurological damage. Now that the medical evidence is incontrovertible, it has sought to reduce high-speed collisions, fining defenders for helmet-to-helmet hits and other flagrantly violent play. Its most significant response has been to offer $765 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by more than 4,500 former players, but a judge recently blocked the settlement. It simply wasn’t enough money. The second argument is that players choose to incur the game’s risks and are lavishly compensated for doing so. This is technically true."

"We could drag the two biggest sports in America into a world of urine samples and arbitration and lame apologies, but there are two reasons this is a bad idea. First, because it's ultimately just going to undermine the credibility of the sport when you start having the biggest superstars testing positive for PEDs. Sure, nobody cares when some middle linebacker tests positive for PEDs, but what if it's a guy like Peyton Manning or Adrian Peterson testing positive for HGH while they rehab an injury? It wouldn't take more than a few big names in the NFL before fans begin to distrust anyone who does anything impressive. The same is true with the NBA. Catch one or two superstars doing HGH, and suddenly anyone who's not 185 pounds becomes a suspect. That hints at the bigger problem. There are always some exotic substance that doesn't show up, guys who take ridiculous supplements between testing cycles, or people trying new, unfair treatments that aren't even illegal yet. It doesn't matter how aggressive and invasive you get. No testing program will ever catch everyone and every psychotic new therapy that emerges. Fans understand this as well as anyone. That's why, once you start catching a small group of stars and get people talking about PEDs, it taints everyone else by default."

What fan doesn't enjoy seeing his favorite star one more time? Only sportswriters cherish storybook career-finishes. If sportswriters had their way, every star would die of Lou Gehrig disease during his last dance on the field, the court, or the rink."
