'We played Call to Post, we told him it was 'riders up' and we sang songs,' Hagney said Sunday afternoon from the barn. 'The people from the funeral home helped us out. He's right here for the last time. I brought him here every day for two years prior to Covid.'

"It's the conversations I enjoy the most and will miss the most, the ones along the rail in the morning before the day begins to tighten its grip. But this summer, it seems like all of the conversations end with a long, downward-trending rant about what’s wrong with the sport. Chad Brown's domination, too many races, the Labor Board, workman's compensation, the dead rail, the shrinking foal crop, rough riding, questionable stewards' calls, unsound horses, the lack of opportunities, the disconnect between horsemen and management, the cheaters, the list goes on and on. Nothing ever gets accomplished in these rants, but we always wind up there. Saratoga used to feel like a respite, a time to revel in what is good in racing, not wallow in what is wrong."

Each day, he got fresher, tormenting the pony, biting his withers, kicking at him, leaping in the air, bucking. On the last day I ponied him, we walked onto the Oklahoma. I figured I had to let him do something, he grabbed the pony by the withers, shaking him like a piggy bank. The pony finally had enough. He went left, kicked out and Dave went right, the leather shank sliding through my hand until I was holding only the tip. Dave looked me dead in the eye and tossed his head, the shank hit the ground. He was loose. But, he didn't run. I squeezed the pony, sidling next to Dave and reaching for the shank, he jogged four steps and stopped, staring at me. We did this four, five, six times. Each time as I had the shank at my fingertips, Dave would scoot off, then stop and do it again. Jim Bond, at least I'm pretty sure it was Jim Bond, watched it all from the gap. He and I finally made eye contact. He knew what I was thinking and I knew what he was thinking. As I inched closer and reached for the shank, Dave spun right and right into Bond’s awaiting hands. I had never felt such relief. I took the shank and Dave didn't make a wrong move the rest of the ride. It was just a game. He won. He knew it. I knew it."

2. The raids have left restaurants short staffed and farms unmanned, but mysteriously spared undocumented workers at the race track, according to the Times-Union. Which is why the management have taken steps to alleviate the pressure cooker environment during training of a morning:

There will be roughly 10 percent fewer horses stabled at Del Mar this summer, with a 40-horse cap per trainer.

For a ten-minute window after each break, only horses scheduled to work can use the track (a change adopted during the meet last year).

An official veterinarian will also be posted at the track of a morning to watch horses enter and leave the track (though management admit that more than one vet is needed to adequately cover the various gaps on and off the track)

Racing will begin a week later this year than usual to give the horses more time to acclimatize to the new environment, and for the track superintendent to ensure the surface is up to par.

Obviously with Travers Day this year we’ve taken that step. I think every weekend has its separate identity, whether it’s Alabama, Fourstardave, Woodward, whatever. We’ve certainly moved to make Travers Day a little bit stronger. People will say, ‘look you have 48,000 every Travers, so why would you do that?’ Well, we charge a simulcast rate for the rest of the country and 85 percent of our money is bet out there, not here. By enhancing Travers Day it allows us to raise that rate and say, ‘listen guys, we’re providing a lot of product for you. You’re going to pay us more money on that day.’ That means NYRA makes more money and the horsemen make more money. If we can grow Travers Day into what I call a national day, it helps all the other tracks in America, too."

The emptiness of the grandstand was of concern, particularly since the preceding Wednesday saw a three-year low of 8,044 in attendance. We now know that not only was it John Madden, but that Madden's 1908 season is arguably the best any Saratoga trainer has ever had. (Sorry, Todd Pletcher). Madden won 16 races that year during a 15-day meet. To this day he remains the only trainer ever to average more than one win per day. That feat looks even better when you consider that they only had six races a day back then. Madden won nearly 18 percent of all the races contested at the meet. At today's expanded meet, that would be the equivalent of Pletcher winning 72 races. He's never won more than 38. Madden also won seven stakes at the 1908 meet."

Mrs. Ames was very much in evidence then. I didn’t like it in the summer because of the incessant coming and going, but the winter was rather different. There were only six of us, and just by luck we all liked each other and had a very good time. I wrote one poem, I think, in that whole stretch. The first time I liked the horse races, I’m afraid. In the summer—I think this still goes on—you can walk through the Whitney estate to the tracks. A friend and I used to walk there early in the morning and sit at the track and have coffee and blueberry muffins while they exercised the horses. I loved that. We went to a sale of yearlings in August and that was beautiful. The sale was in a big tent. The grooms had brass dustpans and brooms with brass handles and they’d go around after the little colts and sweep up the manure. That’s what I remember best about Yaddo."

Jeff Scott on the direction of racing over the past decade. "Another Saratoga trend is the continued decline in the number of conditioned allowance races, particularly in open (non-statebred) events. By limiting fields to horses who have won a similar number of races ("other than maiden, claiming, starter or restricted") conditioned allowances pit horses of roughly equal accomplishment against each other, and thus are often attractive betting propositions. The number of open, conditioned allowances at Saratoga (including those run as optional claimers) decreased from 54 to 34 between 2004 and 2009. Ten years earlier, in 1999, there were 72."
