"I've been going to the yearling sales for 20 years. In all that time BB has been very much in evidence in the early part of the sales (books 1 & 2) when the expensive horses sell. He marches around the grounds with his large entourage like a conquering hero. Everybody stops to greet him. The clients he buys for bask in his reflected glory. Horse handlers take note and position their sales yearlings to give him the best view. Bid spotters and auctioneers keep one eye on him at all times.

"Well, not this year. Not now at the Keeneland September sale, which is currently going on. BB is wandering around all by himself. No one says hello. No one even acknowledges him. His 'Avengers' group is buying horses like crazy – but even though they're still standing by him publicly, they're not standing next to him in real life.

"By book 3 (starting today) usually he'd have already left town. Instead this morning he was in the back walking ring, trying to get oblivious handlers to stop walking so he could check out their yearlings. And really, no one cared what he was doing. No one was paying attention at all. I only noticed because he happened to be standing across from us.

"Side note: usually when a yearling enters the ring, the announcer gives a one one minute description of the horse's sire's and dam's accomplishments. Earlier when a colt by Protonico (sire of Medina Spirit) came in, the announcer just talked about the female family then said, 'He's by Protonico.'

"Things are feeling pretty chilly in Kentucky. (And it's about damn time.)"

Michael Spirito, who agreed to a $25,000 settlement, told the board he had misdated by as many as seven days before the January 2017 and January 2018 Keeneland sales to make time for his family's Christmas vacations. But if Radcliffe has had to be wary of new friends, then she has all the more reason to cherish those going back to the years when nobody — least of all herself–could conceive what kind of little acorn had been sown when she was introduced, six years ago next month, to a Bahrain-born, Berkeley-educated businessman named Amer Abdul Aziz Salman at the Dubai Carnival. To everyone else, Phoenix rose without trace: suddenly Radcliffe, discreetly bidding from an office at the Fasig-Tipton breeze-ups in Miami last March, was causing bewilderment and incredulity among underbidders accustomed to having the last say."

From 2005: "Keeneland's sales data, published several times a year, is a barometer for the mood of the free-spending global ultrarich. After all, thoroughbreds are expensive, trophy, gambling-oriented products. The average price for a horse sold at Keeneland in 2005 was $95,108. (In the November sale, Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum of Dubai shelled out $9 million for Ashado.) Like art, antiques, or fine wines, thoroughbreds are luxury goods that are also investments. Mutual funds continually warn that past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Horses are the exact opposite: They are bought in large part based on their pedigree. Good bloodlines should produce a great racehorse. But it's an inexact science. Thoroughbreds are highly speculative bets on a highly speculative enterprise. Which means you'd expect prices to be highly related to the global rich's collective appetite for risk. When people are flush and feeling lucky, they'll invest big in the ponies. When people are feeling fearful about the future, they're likely to avoid them."

"There is massive interest and enthusiasm among enough people who want to own good horses — ‘Saturday’ horses — and there are even quite a few people, judging from the strength of the prices for broodmare and broodmare prospects, who want to breed them, and not just for money. But the polarity now between 'what they want' — 'they' in this case being a lot of people who are newly willing to put money in the thoroughbred business — and 'what they don’t want' is starker than ever. There are horse racing economies — national, international, and local — and there need to be more efficient methods both of producing the horses with the potential to achieve the various levels, and of placing the horses where they belong once their level is identified. In short, in order to improve its chances of surviving and prospering, ‘Horse Racing Inc.’ needs to take a really serious look at how it can reorganize itself."

Anyone who doubts this should go to the Tattersalls Horses in Training sale at Newmarket, where the prices are largely determined by what such publications say about the horses on offer and the ratings given to them. Not only are these ratings and informed commentaries not available in any French publication, but those in the English language ones are rarely flattering to horses who have raced outside England and Ireland. Look at almost any French-trained winner of a major race in England and you will find that its rating improved by pounds on the ferry across the English Channel."

Those farms also have a massive financial commitment to the future of racing and to its success and integrity. Among the notable foreign buyers are Russian agency Raut that not only bought 76% more horses (37 versus 21 a year ago), but spent 448% more on its purchases. The agency spent $2.62 million compared with $412,500 in 2011. Shigeyuki Okada’s Big Red Farm of Japan, which acquired two-time classic winner I’ll Have Another for stud duty earlier in the year, also stepped up its spending, buying five yearlings for nearly $1.42 million compared with 2011 when it bought only two for $150,000."
