Re: the Wiley-Perplexity integration: "For libraries, this integration sits at the intersection of two ongoing conversations: the role of AI in scholarly communication and the future of access to licensed content. On the one hand, Perplexity’s partnership with Wiley represents a potential model for how AI tools might responsibly engage with academic content. Answers generated by Perplexity include citations, maintain the source’s authority, and offer users pathways back to the original material — practices that help reinforce academic norms around attribution and traceability. On the other hand, it raises critical questions about what it means when access is mediated through an AI interface rather than a library website or catalog, and more broadly, what role websites will play in a future shaped by AI agents."

Pew Research findings, September 2025, key takeaways: "Americans are much more concerned than excited about the increased use of AI in daily life, with a majority saying they want more control over how AI is used in their lives. Far larger shares say AI will erode than improve people's ability to think creatively and form meaningful relationships. At the same time, a majority is open to letting AI assist them with day-to-day tasks and activities. Most Americans don't support AI playing a role in personal matters such as religion or matchmaking. They're more open to AI for heavy data analysis, such as for weather forecasting and developing new medicines. Americans feel strongly that it's important to be able to tell if pictures, videos or text were made by AI or by humans. Yet many don't trust their own ability to spot AI-generated content."

Gary Lavin, a veterinarian on the EDRC, answered the suggestion that the study is a back-door effort for a ban by saying that -- rather than pursuing a ban -- the idea would be dropped if the study finds that 12 hours isn't as effective as four hours before a race. But he also repeated the concern of American Lasix opponents that there's a danger that overseas owners won't come to the United States to buy horses because of the drug's use here. Veterinarian and EDRC member Dr. Andy Roberts cast the other vote against the study with Hiles, saying he didn't think state money should be used to help pay for such a study. Roberts said furosemide is fast acting and studying the optimal time might better look at an administration closer to the race -- like two hours -- rather than farther ahead."

"The study, which may require the Jockey Club to claim more than 100 horses off the track and pay for the horses’ upkeep and training for more than a month, would be enormously expensive, and Iuliano told the council that the Jockey Club would need to find 'widespread industry support' to fund it. While the proposal is still in its formative stages, Iuliano asked the council whether or not it would support a further exploration of the study for the purposes of a more formal consideration down the road, including devoting council funds to the study. The council, which receives its funding from parimutuel receipts and has funded studies in the past to determine withdrawal times for drugs that have benefited the entire racing industry, eventually conducted a vote on whether the Jockey Club should return to the council with a more detailed proposal. The motion passed by a voice vote of 7-2, with Roberts and Rick Hiles, the longtime president of the KHBPA, voting no."

Abstract: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.2042-3306.2012.00651.x/abstract "The study population included 117,088 horses. Geldings had significantly (P<0.001) longer careers than females and intact males, and females had significantly (P<0.001) longer careers than intact males. Risk of retirement from racing decreased with a younger age at first start, a higher number of starts as a 2-year-old, and a longer average distance raced. For intact males, the risk of retirement from racing increased as earnings increased, while for females and geldings the risk of retirement from racing decreased as earnings increased."
