"Lexington was arguably the best racehorse of his day, but his prowess as a racer was as nothing compared to his impact as a sire. His career straddled both the American Civil War and the transition between the highly stamina-oriented heat racing commonplace before the war and the much more speed-oriented “dash” racing that became the norm afterward. Lexington's progeny proved ideally suited to the new realities of racing, and Lexington became the most dominant sire ever seen in North America, leading the general sire list 16 times. While no records were kept of broodmare sire statistics until much later, Lexington was equally valuable as a broodmare sire, with the result that by the end of the 19th century, a heavy majority of Thoroughbreds produced in North American carried his blood, often through multiple crosses. His male line is now extinct, but his influence lives on in pedigrees around the world."

The latter was a highly talented athlete who campaigned three seasons for earnings of slightly more than $3 million, plus two additional Grade 1 victories: the Metropolitan Handicap and Clark Handicap. Interestingly, Shackleford probably exists because of The Green Monkey. The latter is out of a good-looking mare by leading sire Unbridled (by Fappiano), and The Green Monkey sold as Fasig-Tipton’s February auction of 2-year-olds in training in 2006. The Green Monkey, bred on the cross of Forestry mated to an Unbridled mare, made owners of Unbridled mares believe that great things might lie in store for those bred in similar fashion. Shackelford’s dam, the Unbridled mare Oatsee, was sent to Forestry in 2007 ..."

The Y chromosome, distributed through the paternal line, represents less than 1 percent of the equine genome and contains genes mostly associated with sperm production and fertility. But it does contain ancestry “information”, and studies are underway to establish whether the genetic sequencing of the Byerley Turk line shows diversity from those of the Darley Arabian crowd. Pending more certainty, it boils down to instinct. Even to a sense of decency. What right do we have, in our avarice and myopia, to kill off such a colourful part of the Thoroughbred’s heritage?"

“What kind of horse is this?” wondered Churchill Downs executive and resident Derby authority John Asher.

“The term that came to my mind was ‘Freak,’ ” said former trainer Elliott Walden, now president and CEO of WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. “To run those fractions and then open up at the top of the lane, it was just incredible.”

Racing against the boys, Bateau beat the older Display(1923) to win the Whitney in a thrilling finish. (Since 1928, when Black Helen became the first filly to win the Whitney, only five others, including Bateau, have ever won it to the present day. The last was the incomparable Personal Ensign, who won it in 1988.) Bateau then went on to beat the 1928 Preakness winner, Victorian (1925), in the South Maryland Handicap and battled the excellent Petee-Wrack (1925) to victory in the Suburban. This would be Bateau’s last stakes race before her retirement, but it was enough to have her honoured as the Champion Handicap Mare of 1929. Expectations were high as Man O’ War’s champion daughter headed off to the breeding shed. But after a few tries and much frustration, Bateau was declared barren. Rather than risk losing her on the track, Bateau was given a new job, that of the Jeffords’ hack, or riding horse, and kept in the same stable as other Jeffords’ pleasure horses."

That this grey line of inheritance can be traced irrefutably to this particular source is due to two facts: firstly that any grey must have at least one grey parent; and secondly by virtue of the meticulous records of heredity maintained down the years by Messrs. Weatherbys, compilers and publishers of the General Stud Book. By far the greatest number of contemporary greys have The Tetrarch, a horse who might so well have been gelded as a youngster, as an essential link in the often precarious grey line of inheritance ...”

The exceptions, however, are interesting. High-class Irish 2-year-old El Prado, by Sadler's Wells, was imported by Adena Springs in Kentucky.

A history of gray thoroughbreds and how the color survived. "We have now reached the wild frontier of the pre-Stud Book era, when a riot of exotic colors like palomino, dun, and buckskin were well attested, alongside our more familiar hues. Gray was on its way to becoming a 'museum' color too. But the thin gray line was preserved, thanks to the otherwise obscure Master Robert, whose gray posterity held on, one generation at a time, until bursting forth anew with The Tetrarch and his tribe. The vicissitudes of genetics, bad advice, sterility, and U-boats could not prevent it."

And chances are, any success by their offspring will be attributed to the mares’ genetic prowess while the failures will surely fall on the backs of the sires. That in itself constitutes a seismic shift in attitude."
