[NYRA] said Friday it had established a hearing process that it said would allow trainers, jockeys and owners to receive due process.

"Drawn by the feasts of horse oats and refuse, rats often pass unimpeded from the barns through holes visible in the sides of the cinder-block dorms and small clapboard shacks where the workers live, according to workers who reside there. Rooms are often shared, and many are squalid, with mattresses or pallets on the floor, some with punched-out windows covered by cardboard. The workers asked not to be named because they feared reprisal for criticizing the facility, which is state-owned and operated by the racing association." The Belmont spring meetings will be conducted throughout the construction period. If all goes smoothly, that project could be completed by 2021. The Belmont Stakes will not be run at Aqueduct, as is it was when Belmont was reconstructed in the 1960s. Belmont’s fall meetings are not as secure. Kay said he is trying to balance simultaneous racing and construction. Kay told HRI that the entire clubhouse will be enclosed, winterized, and that corporate/luxury boxes will be constructed. The clubhouse will be dual faced with a view of the track facing north and a view of the paddock to the south."

Staying events also provide a welcome change of pace on American racing cards that are increasingly top-heavy with races at sprint distances. While NYRA is to be commended for creating these new stakes, in particular the two on dirt, no one is under the illusion that these races by themselves will have much of an impact. Obviously with Travers Day this year we’ve taken that step. I think every weekend has its separate identity, whether it’s Alabama, Fourstardave, Woodward, whatever. We’ve certainly moved to make Travers Day a little bit stronger. People will say, ‘look you have 48,000 every Travers, so why would you do that?’ Well, we charge a simulcast rate for the rest of the country and 85 percent of our money is bet out there, not here. By enhancing Travers Day it allows us to raise that rate and say, ‘listen guys, we’re providing a lot of product for you. You’re going to pay us more money on that day.’ That means NYRA makes more money and the horsemen make more money.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The second year of a non-Met Mile Memorial Day at Belmont Park was better than the first for the New York Racing Association.

Total all-sources handle Monday at Belmont Park was $10,923,486, a 10.1 percent increase over last year’s total handle figure of $9,913,636. Ontrack handle Monday was $2,008,956, a 9.3 percent increase over last year’s figure of $1,837,245.

Attendance was 6,837, down 109 from last year’s figure of 6,946.

On Monday, Belmont hosted Big Apple Showcase Day, a 10-race, six-stakes card entirely of New York-bred races. There were 85 betting interests compared to 73 on last year’s 10-race Memorial Day card. The Poker Stakes was the highlight of last year’s 10-race Memorial Day card.

For years, the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap was the feature on Memorial Day. In 2013, the last year the race was run on Memorial Day, total all-sources handle was $16,191,645 and attendance was 11,664 on an 11-race card that also included the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps, the Grade 1 Acorn, and the Grade 2 Sands Point. [All were moved to the Belmont Stakes card in 2014.]
