2. "Critics such as Cara Wilczynski, who lives near the site, have been making their case to voters, too. She said the proponents have not shared enough details, and she doesn't think the remote property is a good place for a racetrack. 'I'm all for supporting any business in town,' she said. 'What I’m not interested in is making these millionaires richer ... these people who are trying to come into the town and take over.' Several local farmers have also been fighting it. They worry it could erode protections from the state’s Agricultural Preservation Restriction program. APR subsidies helped preserve nearly 1,000 farms — including Great Meadowbrook, now used for hay — totaling more than 73,000 acres across the state since the late 1970s."

Their very first acquisition ended up exceeding expectations to race at Saratoga. Lamberty later rose through the ranks at Centennial Farms, where he was the point-person for the syndicate's clients into the early 2010s. He especially relished his roles in helping to select young horses at sales and giving insights on the progression of racing prospects. Friends who recalled a storm-soaked P-Lam celebrating with unbridled enthusiasm at Monmouth after Corinthian splashed home first in the 2007 GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile for Centennial will probably never encounter a happier rain-drenched racetracker."

"The end of Suffolk is sad for many other reasons. It continues to stun me that an area that had active Thoroughbred racing at Suffolk, Rockingham, Narragansett, Lincoln Downs, Scarborough Downs, Green Mountain and the Brockton, Weymouth, Marshfield, Northampton, Great Barrington, and Berkshire Downs fair circuit, and which offered day/night Thoroughbred racing all year long, now, after this weekend, no longer has any live Thoroughbred racing whatsoever ... I suppose the demise of tracks like Longacres, Ak-Sar-Ben, and the tracks in Detroit are somewhat analogous. But given the history involved, I don't think we've seen a dissolution of Thoroughbred racing in an entire geographical region that includes a major U.S. city quite like this. And it's very tough to take."

When the track opened 84 years ago, Mort Mahony was responsible for installing the parimutuel wagering system, which he had done two years earlier at Rockingham in New Hampshire. Mahony had spent more than three decades running betting rings at tracks up and down the East Coast and in the Midwest, working for legendary bookmaker John Cavanaugh, before parimutuel wagering was legalized. In 1911, he installed the first mutuels at Woodbine in Canada when it became the first track in North America to have fully operational machine wagering.

Mahony's son, Briggs, and grandson, Pat, followed him into the business. Pat, who ran the mutuels at Hialeah, Calder and Gulfstream in Florida, and at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga in New York, before retiring in 2016, was on hand for the Suffolk Downs finale yesterday, which included the Mort Mahony Classic in the ninth, and penultimate, race on the card.

"I am heartsick about it," Mahony said of the end of live racing. "I had to be here today. Mort was here at the beginning and this is the end. I wouldn't miss it."

Baker’s proposal sets a tax rate of 10 percent for in-person betting and 12.5 percent for online wagering. Both levies would be on the money that licensed sports betting operators keep after paying out winnings.

"The existing record (based largely on Nevada's, and to a lesser extent New Jersey's online betting experience) suggests that the current casino licensees — Penn National at Plainridge Park, MGM Springfield, and Wynn Resorts in Everett — would be the most effective vehicles through which to implement the Massachusetts sports betting regime under the regulatory oversight of the Gaming Commission. Each is eager to add a sports book to their own offerings, and they could function as the intermediary for expanded online offerings outside of the brick and mortar of their physical premises as may be subsequently approved by the Legislature. There is an added benefit to the Commonwealth, since sports books at casinos would likely increase the appeal of the casinos. Casino revenues would likely increase as the sports bettors drawn to them patronize the casinos' table games and slots. As discussed before, that business is higher margin for the operators and is subject to higher tax levels. Thus, there is the tangible prospect of a significant net boost to the state's finances beyond what is strictly generated by sports bets alone."

As the Massachusetts Gaming Commission's first director of racing, I helped guide the efforts of its Division of Racing during MGC's nascent years. Thanks to the commissioners' keen interest in best practices and the advocacy and support of stakeholders such as Suffolk Downs and the hundreds of owner and trainer small businesses of the New England HBPA, Massachusetts was one of the earliest states to fully adopt the national industry's full complement of truly significant reforms to its veterinary practice, medication, and testing regulations. This was collective work, and all of the parties involved have a vested interest in seeing their tremendous efforts succeed."

A renovated track could also host concerts and other events. There is however, work to do before the sound of thundering hooves reverberates off the Berkshire hillsides." The Great Barrington site will need extensive renovations and rehabbing to the grandstand, racetrack, and other structures before it can be resurrected for racing, but at least the infrastructure is there. What isn't there is a one-mile oval or a turf course. Tuttle said that they are hopeful of enlarging the track, which measures five furlongs, but he could not estimate a cost of what will be a total renovation project because engineering and other studies and due diligence are not completed."

"Local historian Gary Leveille, who is the archivist for the Great Barrington Historical Society, told the Edge the track is an important part of the town’s history. It’s located only a few hundred feet from the historical society’s headquarters at the Wheeler House. Leveille also shared a personal anecdote about sneaking into a race almost 45 years ago: 'During Fair Week in September of 1973, I was in college and didn’t have much money. My buddy Rich Fitzgerald and I wanted to go to the Barrington Fair, but didn't want to spend our limited funds on tickets to get in. They weren't cheap. So, we borrowed cowboy hats from someone, walked toward the back of the fair where the horses were stabled. We starting talking about Secretariat, the thoroughbred racehorse that won the triple crown that year, and just pretended that we were part of the racing crowd. It worked. Nobody questioned us, and we got in for free.' Reaction from the town has been positive, though it’s not clear what kind of regulatory hurdles SSD will have to clear to get the project green-lighted."

"The leasing of Great Barrington means the sport could continue in the state. Purses are enhanced by revenue from operating casinos, so there will be enough money to sustain a longer season. But the relocation comes with a big caveat. In order to pull off the deal, Sterling Suffolk said it needs help from the state Legislature. Chip Tuttle, chief operating officer of Sterling Suffolk, said the arrangement will hinge on the passage of a measure, already before the state legislature, that would expand the ways casino revenues can be used for horse racing. Tuttle said such a change is necessary to defray some of the about $10 million it would cost to move racing to Great Barrington and renovate the facilities there."
