Thus, in the repurposing of Foster's song, the slave sold downriver missed his carefree existence in Kentucky. This was an element of the post-Reconstruction softening of what the Confederacy was and what it stood for, part of redirecting memory toward the 'Lost Cause' and away from the reality of America's Original Sin. Later in the country's history, the song was expropriated altogether as white Old South experience."

"While California trainers have sent horses to Kentucky's leading race meetings for decades, this spring there is a larger-than-normal group of horses who were shipped from California. On Sunday, trainer Mark Glatt said he plans to send approximately 15 horses to the Churchill Downs spring-summer meeting, which begins April 27. Miller said on Saturday he will have an expanded group in Kentucky this spring and summer in addition to the 15 already based there. The departure from Santa Anita of runners from several leading stables is taking a severe toll on the available group of horses at Santa Anita in an already difficult year. There were 47 runners in eight races at Santa Anita on Sunday, a day that would typically have had nine races. On Sunday, there was one four-horse field and four races with five runners."

"Of the 25 racetracks that share their casualty counts with the public, only one was more deadly last year than Churchill Downs. And despite its recent rash of gloomy headlines, it wasn't Santa Anita ... records show the home of the Kentucky Derby has lost 43 thoroughbreds to racing injuries since 2016, a 2.42 per 1,000-start average that was 50 percent higher than the national average during the same three-year span. Last year, with 16 fatalities in 5,856 starts, Churchill’s death rate was higher still: 2.73 per 1,000." [ARCHIVE NOTE: "This link cannot be archived by archive.org."

It’s both possible and probable that tracks first ran off their black spectators in the early years of Jim Crow and didn’t bother to woo them back when segregation was legally ended. At Keeneland, a separate wooden grandstand near the finish line served black crowds until 1953, when it was torn down to expand the main grandstand. Although there was no longer an officially segregated section for black spectators, observers said they continued to congregate at that part of the track. Now, racing’s grand pooh-bahs may be too worried about numerous other problems aside from the diversity of its audience."
