From 2005: "Keeneland's sales data, published several times a year, is a barometer for the mood of the free-spending global ultrarich. After all, thoroughbreds are expensive, trophy, gambling-oriented products. The average price for a horse sold at Keeneland in 2005 was $95,108. (In the November sale, Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum of Dubai shelled out $9 million for Ashado.) Like art, antiques, or fine wines, thoroughbreds are luxury goods that are also investments. Mutual funds continually warn that past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Horses are the exact opposite: They are bought in large part based on their pedigree. Good bloodlines should produce a great racehorse. But it's an inexact science. Thoroughbreds are highly speculative bets on a highly speculative enterprise. Which means you'd expect prices to be highly related to the global rich's collective appetite for risk. When people are flush and feeling lucky, they'll invest big in the ponies. When people are feeling fearful about the future, they're likely to avoid them."

Only nine horses of the 73 horses on the card did not receive the drug, and four of them competed in the same 2-year-old maiden race. In statistical terms, horses who weren’t administered furosemide represented 12.3 percent of the horses on the card, yet the non-furosemide horses won 45 percent of the races. Those are outsized results by many measures, especially when considering that none of the non-Lasix winners was favored and that only 5 percent of horses nationally in 2013 ran without the drug."

If you were told that field size for your premier three-year-old race would increase by 48 percent, you would agree to a synthetic track of plastic bottle caps. I went back and looked at the Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar to see what the results were when they switched to Polytrack in 2007. In the years between 2000 and 2006, the Pacific Classic was run on dirt and the average field size for the seven runnings was 8.28 starters per race. People have been sitting on money for a while, plus we have unusual tax incentives that expire at the end of this year. That pushes a guy into that mood as well ... and there’s a lot of thanks for that. It’s encouraging for the breeders. It’s been three years since they’ve had any smiles on their faces."

"In a year, I can count on one hand the amount of times I'll ask a vet to gate-scratch a horse. And I ride anywhere from 700 to 1,200 races in a single season. A lot of these people are really good clients of mine and I'm trying my best to bring them success. I know how much time, effort and money it takes to get a horse to the races. I appreciate the opportunities to partner with them. I don't take the idea of gate-scratching a horse lightly. But let's say I'm wrong and the horse is okay. What's the worst that can happen? He lives to run another day. If I'm right and I ignore that instinct, the potential results aren't pleasant for anyone."
