“This perception that you shouldn’t be racing 2-year-olds, I have to say again and again, it’s a total misperception,” Parkin said. “The earlier you start racing a horse the better for their long-term career in terms of their bone health. I’m not saying that you should hammer a 2-year-old too frequently, but certainly exercise at an early age is a good thing for the racehorse, and this is borne out by these data.”

Also: “There are bound to be unmeasured variables that we haven’t taken into account, and there are tons of them if you think about it,” Parkin added, pointing to detailed training records, medical records, and a horse’s race-day health status as examples of current unknowns. “Things that we don’t have access to are bound to be associated with risk,” Parkin said. “The availability of medical and treatment records, we believe, is critical.”

"One notable factor in the lack of prior experience of horses in both the Del Mar Futurity and the Hopeful can be attributed to the fact that trainers known for their success with juveniles are now sending out fewer 2-year-old starters overall. The much-ballyhooed issue racing faces with declining foal crops seems to be a potential cause for this decline. Bob Baffert debuted 11 2 year-olds at the recently concluded Del Mar meet. That was down from 20 in 2013 and 18 in 2012. Todd Pletcher debuted 29 juveniles at this year’s Saratoga meet, down from 35 in 2011 and 40 in 2012."

Saratoga doesn't need and can't support six open juvenile stakes on the dirt, three for colts and three for fillies. It would make more sense to have the Hopeful and Spinaway, two races run toward the end of the meet, kick off the 2-year-old stakes season. Do away with the earlier stakes, save money and replace with them with a couple of allowance races."

Geldings had significantly (P<0.001) longer careers than females and intact males, and females had significantly (P<0.001) longer careers than intact males. Risk of retirement from racing decreased with a younger age at first start, a higher number of starts as a 2-year-old, and a longer average distance raced. For intact males, the risk of retirement from racing increased as earnings increased, while for females and geldings the risk of retirement from racing decreased as earnings increased."
