"But there was one thing that aired last Thursday night that I thought was honest. In fact, it was the most honest thing I witnessed in the three-plus-hour broadcast. That was the decision by Amazon's production truck to show a half-dozen-or-so replays of Tua's injury that included some high-def closeups. This was honest sports television, the violence of pro football unvarnished. It was painful and uncomfortable to watch. But it was real."

Also, as every horse racing fan knows: "The NFL has always come with an inherent tension as a viewer. The sport is thrilling, a near-perfect television experience, but those who play it suffer for our escapism."

Of that group, 54% never started again. For those 46% of horses who did race again, the fatal breakdown rate is 3.1%, much higher than the 0.18% for all starters. Those numbers certainly trigger a red flag, and Parkin said enhanced initial information would provide superior predictive data ... Parkin said consistency in receiving information on non-fatal injuries—and how they are characterized and reported—would be key to improving the predictive abilities of the model. It's a challenge because the fatality rate is so low, less than two per 1,000 starts."

Dr. Tim Parkin, veterinarian and epidemiologist from the University of Glasgow, said so far his team has been able to explain just 35 percent of the change in fatality rates with its statistical models. The remaining 65 percent of the rate reduction that hasn't been quantified, and it may or may not be influenced by those regulatory changes. Among the factors associated with 35 percent of the fatality rate decline: racing at two years old (horses are more likely to make their first starts at two, which is associated with reduced risk of injury), fewer races at six furlongs or under, fewer starts on dirt tracks not rated 'fast,' and longer periods of time with the same trainer."

Under the new rules, the state’s thresholds for painkillers apply during the work, and so far, two horses attempting to work off the vet list tested positive for excessive levels of the drug.

"But the question has to be asked, 'Is anyone actually looking after the horses?' Even though they both took heat in the 40-page report in September, the same head veterinarian and Director of Racing from last year are still in place at the New York Racing Association. On Thursday, Pleasantfriday turned for home in front of the fifth race when she broke her right front leg, sending jockey Cornelio Velasquez hard to the ground. Velasquez quickly bounced back after being taken off the track in an ambulance, but the 5-year-old mare wasn’t as lucky as a splint was applied to her injured leg and she was vanned off only to find out she fractured both sesamoids in her leg. The Task Force ... found no single root cause for the fatalities but a combination of factors, including the increased purses in claiming races from monies generated from the casino at Aqueduct to run substandard horses. But so far this year, the fatalities have included much better horses, including stakes winner Wildcat’s Smile, who died on Sunday. Another winter like last year can’t be allowed to happen."

"Though not by an extreme amount, the rate of 3-year-old attrition in 2012 is on pace to be the highest in at least a decade, and the temptation is to fit the situation into what has become a common racing narrative – the demise of the Thoroughbred. Horses aren’t as tough as they used to be, this line of thinking goes. Drugs have weakened the breed. But it’s hard to pin the 2012 burnout rate on any one factor, and statistics from the last decade don’t even strongly support the idea that this is anything more than an especially unfortunate year."

I took my time jogging and galloping here before I started to breeze, but that didn’t seem to matter.
