"I think a Breeders' Cup at Woodbine would work," said trainer Mark Casse, whose vast stable includes a string at Woodbine. "You're touching on a subject that is very dear to me. I've probably run more horses on synthetic and dirt than maybe anyone in the world. I do my own studies all the time. There are not a lot of things I know for sure in this game, but I definitely know that the synthetic is better on the horses. With all the trouble we're facing now with our great sport, we have to continue to look at what is best for horse racing. I think it would be nice for people to see how things are done at Woodbine on the Tapeta."

But even though she’s no longer in the saddle come post time, Villeneuve is still helping horses down the home stretch – in an entirely new way ... by 1991, Villeneuve was the head-turning kind of jockey who got people talking. She broke several gender barriers, becoming the first woman to place in the Queen’s Plate and the first of four women ever to compete in all three Triple Crown races."

“The death of synthetic racing in North America has been a much-exaggerated concept,” said Steve Koch, WEG’s former vice-president of racing, who now holds the title of executive director, Safety & Integrity Alliance, with the NTRA. “Synthetics have been foregone where dirt might be the favorable commercial option. What persists then are the locales where all-weather performance is critical and strong local horse populations can be maximized on the synthetic. There’s clearly space and demand in the market for synthetic racing. Woodbine anticipates the current synthetic circuit in North America sustains itself with horse supply and that this circuit will actually grow in the future."

In a barnstorming tour from Oct. 2 to Nov. 12 that covered more than 5,500 miles, hit three countries and four racetracks on two continents, the 4-year-old homebred daughter of Targowice out of Agujita by Vieux Manoir defeated 51 world-class, mostly male, opponents. In that 41-day stretch, she earned just more than $2.1 million thanks to claiming the inaugural North American Turf Triple bonus of $1 million that was awarded to the winner of the $520,250 Rothmans International, the $585,700 Turf Classic at Aqueduct in New York on Oct. 29, and the $250,000 D.C. International Nov. 12 at Laurel Park in Maryland."

Mike Watchmaker: "Look, I have been a big proponent of the European shippers this year and have been since early last July when Chinchon came over from France with mediocre running lines and dominated the United Nations. I have been saying here and in other places that the Europeans will be formidable in the Breeders' Cup. I still believe that, because considering some of the European names that have been bandied about in a Breeders' Cup context, the Europeans who have been so successful here so far this year aren't even close to being as good as what we might see in Louisville. Yet even if I believe this, I also believe that after really analyzing what happened Saturday, the state of the North American sport isn't nearly as hopeless and pathetic as some would have you think."
