It was on the backstretch at Churchill Downs on May, 9, 1968 ... Harthill had grabbed my right hand and coldcocked me with his left. My glasses had been knocked off. I had dropped my camera. And through the fog, I was aware of Harthill standing above me, screaming something about how he knew that I had gone to Mexico to investigate some sort of gambling coup. One certainty is that his undisputed talent in caring for horses was matched by his talents inside the office laboratory he kept across the street from Churchill. In the years following World War II, the science of medicine advanced rapidly, as drug manufacturers churned out remedies for human illness. None of these drugs were ever designed specifically for horses, so enterprising veterinarians like Harthill, an avid reader of human medical journals, were at the vanguard of experimenting with them at the racetrack."

Such a change eliminates the perception that a veterinarian is simply out to sell a medication without regard for its necessity.... The public perception of medication use in racing is another big challenge practitioners face, Blea said, noting a Thoroughbred trainer once said that a good veterinarian with ethics is not going to do very well in racetrack practice. Blea said he takes exception to this trainer's opinion but also recognizes that ethical questions remain among the toughest to address."

Yet in the shed rows of America’s racetracks and at private training centers, racehorse veterinarians often live by a different code — unique in the veterinary community — one that emphasizes drugs to keep horses racing and winning rather than treating soreness or injury through rest or other less aggressive means, according to dozens of interviews and a review of medical and regulatory records."

"A shot of Lasix costs $26 retail. Some vets will administer it for $20. But the accompanying drug regimen before and after the injection often runs the race-day cost to $200 or more. The race-prep veterinary work for one of the most honest, cost-conscious trainers in the business regularly included a $16 bute injection, a $25 injection of acetylcysteine designed to break up lung mucuous, a $30 Salix shot on race day and $49 worth of replacement fluids and electrolytes the day following.... That means that some owners pay more than $400 per month for Lasix and bute alone. Add $800 worth of the prescription ulcer medicine -- omeprazole -- some version of which almost every American racehorse requires -- and the meaning of the word 'mark' quickly becomes clear."
