“The death of synthetic racing in North America has been a much-exaggerated concept,” said Steve Koch, WEG’s former vice-president of racing, who now holds the title of executive director, Safety & Integrity Alliance, with the NTRA. “Synthetics have been foregone where dirt might be the favorable commercial option. What persists then are the locales where all-weather performance is critical and strong local horse populations can be maximized on the synthetic. There’s clearly space and demand in the market for synthetic racing. Woodbine anticipates the current synthetic circuit in North America sustains itself with horse supply and that this circuit will actually grow in the future."

"Tapeta Footings are disappointed to hear that Meydan are replacing the Tapeta track with an American dirt track. It is a step backwards. It is sad that we have already lost two Polytracks in the U.S. and now we are losing yet another synthetic track at Meydan. The U.S. is the only major racing nation who race on dirt. When the Dubai World Cup was on dirt it was only ever won by the U.S. and the UAE; it was not a World Cup. Since it has been run on Tapeta, the winners have come from four different countries, including Animal Kingdom from the U.S. On two occasions there were only seven runners on dirt and last year on Tapeta there were 16 runners and overfilled. On Dubai World Cup night of 2014, the six Tapeta races were won by six different countries. It was fair, formful and above all safe."

"Beyond the cause-and-effect of money, bloodlines, or whatever may be driving the numbers, there is a less concrete, but no-less-important factor: enthusiasm. Racing in the Far East generates the kind of public clamour that no longer exists in countries such as Britain and the U.S. Sure, those of us actually involved in racing in the West love it with a passion, but the sport just doesn’t have the kind of public reach that saw more than 60,000 people stay on after racing at Nakayama to pay tribute to retiring legend Orfevre. The scenes at Meydan that followed Just A Way and Gentildonna’s victories were arguably the best the meeting had seen since Dubai Millennium won the renewal for which he was named. Just A Way cemented himself as just about the best horse on the planet with his six-length romp in the G1 Dubai Duty Free, while the 2013 Japan Cup winner Gentildonna emerged triumphant from the kind of brawl she seems to relish in the G1 Sheema Classic. It is surely from this pool of horses that the Dubai World Cup meeting is likely to draw its future stars."

"As far as the Meydan management are concerned they should want this track specialism trend to abate. They should have their fingers firmly crossed for a Tapeta debutant to come out on top in the world's richest race on Saturday, if only to broaden participation. What they should not want is a repeat of the 2012 World Cup result, which saw unheralded course specialists Monterosso and Capponi run out a 1-2 for the home team against global superstars like So You Think and Game On Dude."

The fact is that serious punters in Britain and Hong Kong or wherever bet more adventurously than Americans. It is arguable that form on synthetics is generally closer to turf form than to dirt, so anyone who can handicap grass races and bet on them successfully should have no fears about betting on synthetics."
