"You're touching on a subject that is very dear to me. I've probably run more horses on synthetic and dirt than maybe anyone in the world. I do my own studies all the time. There are not a lot of things I know for sure in this game, but I definitely know that the synthetic is better on the horses. With all the trouble we're facing now with our great sport, we have to continue to look at what is best for horse racing. I think it would be nice for people to see how things are done at Woodbine on the Tapeta."

The fatality rate in its last full season on synthetics was 0.84. Rare and random events can still appear in clusters, but with a synthetic surface in place, the likelihood of there having been 30 deaths at Santa Anita in the first half of this year is vanishingly small."

Noted: "The network managed to snip the moment when Mongolian Groom suffered his injury out of its replay of the Classic but that, in effect, made it only more difficult to ignore."

What persists then are the locales where all-weather performance is critical and strong local horse populations can be maximized on the synthetic. There’s clearly space and demand in the market for synthetic racing. Woodbine anticipates the current synthetic circuit in North America sustains itself with horse supply and that this circuit will actually grow in the future."

I don’t see a dramatic shift occurring within the next few years that you should be concerned about. The needs of racing and all of its constituents may change, so I don’t think it’s appropriate to say that we’ll fix a percentage now because we might find that, to suit one of our key participants – the betting side – we may need to run more evening racing at different times of the year and to do that, inevitably, we will need some capacity around all-weather.”

You can’t argue with the safety statistics. That means a lot to us. However, there have been some changes since we put it in. One of the reasons we liked it in the first place is that all of the tracks in California were going to be the same. That never happened. With Hollywood gone, now we have one dirt track (Santa Anita) and one synthetic (Del Mar). Does that work best for the horses? I don’t know."

That was greeted with widespread delight by many Californian horse professionals, a short-sighted reaction that is hardly positive for an American industry under pressure to clean up its act, never mind the impact on those trying to make racing’s world a smaller and more inclusive place."

A meeting conducting entirely on an all-weather/synthetic track, with a percentage of 0.19% CEDNFs, would have just nine non-finishers who never raced or worked again. An all-turf meeting would have 12 CEDNFs, based on the percentage of 0.26%. So, in 2009 at least, all-weather/synthetic tracks produced half the number of career-ending incidents than were recorded on dirt, and synthetics were even safer than turf."
