Steve Haskin reminisces: "Although you hate to see so many people, several of whom were friends, lose their job, there was a sense of relief that the Racing Times no longer was a threat. The DRF was once again a monopoly ... then in 1998, following persistent rumors, the Form was purchased by a group headed by none other than Steven Crist. The monopoly he had once detested and tried to destroy was now his ... the DRF has undergone numerous changes, both cosmetically and in content. It remains a monopoly, having been sold several more times, but bears no resemblance to what it once was. The conflict of 1991 is but a distant memory. The mighty DRF won its biggest battle, but in the end lost the war." (Thirty years after, it's all crumbled.)

"In 1935 the American Thoroughbred Breeders Association bought the magazine from publisher Thomas Cromwell and announced it was 'not purchased in order to make changes so much as to perpetuate the influence and the service which have made it invaluable to its subscribers.' The idea was pretty simple: 'There will be drawn a distinct line between the news, special articles, and editorials on the one hand, and advertising on the other. In short, it is the desire of the ATBA that The Blood-Horse be a dignified, accurate, enterprising magazine whose ideals will be the betterment of racing and the proper services of its readers.' Despite remarkable and even radically different ways in which content is now delivered, the purpose of BloodHorse remains the same. From our editorial charter: 'BloodHorse is a trade publication for the business of breeding, as well as a news magazine for the sport of racing. Its coverage ranges from race reporting to profiles on industry personalities, from pedigrees to farm management, from medication issues to simulcasting, and anything in between that is newsworthy and important to the racing and breeding industry.' Regardless of where we ply our trade, we remain here for the Thoroughbred industry." [Published February 20, 2019.]

We are hoping to develop an index of all of the materials taken from handwritten notes of the content on the envelopes. Possibly at the same time we will also transfer the contents of each envelope to envelopes designed to slow the deterioration of the fragile, decades-old paper. The next step is to determine the feasibility of digitizing the content. This will be a significant undertaking, as each item will need to be carefully unfolded without tearing the dried out paper, which are all of varying sizes, background, and color type; and capture them in a usable digital format. If we are able to digitize the content, we can provide efficient access to this massive amount of history."

"What was so impressive about Mr. Cohen to me was his ability to get around obstacles in his way. At the forefront of his effort to put out past performances in Sports Eye, his publication that had only given entries, results and selections, was an obstacle called the track program. The program printed for the tracks at Roosevelt and Yonkers was a product of Doc Robbins. That product was a monopoly of sorts and Mr. Cohen had to figure out how to get access to information in advance of race day in order to provide “his version” of past performances in a timely fashion. Ultimately what he did was pay off Robbins’ employees to provide him a minimal amount of information that would allow for his staff to connect-the-dots and provide a competitive product."

For instance, one idea is to cover the celebrity presence and culture around the Kentucky Derby, which will include sending BuzzFeed to the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala to interview celebrities on the red carpet. There will be multiple Facebook Lives on the day of the Kentucky Derby, including a shoot inside the owner’s box at Churchill Downs and an interview with NBC Sports analyst Eddie Olczyk.

2. “When we sat down with BuzzFeed, we thought a recipe video for a mint julep made the most sense,” Palla said of the unofficial Derby cocktail. “They said they understood why we’d think that and why it’s central to the Derby, but their data suggested focusing on desserts. You look at the numbers, and you can see why we’re letting them be the experts [in areas] where they are the experts.”

“We’ve got a lot to bring to the industry,” he added. “But you have to have a really great product. The content’s the most important thing, and that’s where I think we’ve got an edge.”

This venerable publication faded to dim apologies and went offline under great stress last week. Although some theorize the site broke down under the surge of complaints over the new look, the reason given by management for the washout was technical trouble. The most obvious new look is the red DRF-Plus box that means you must pay to read the majority of the online stories. Giving stuff away free can be done by those with all the money in the world, or by those headed toward financial trouble. Getting hooked up with all that the new DRF has to sell is a little complicated. A quarterly past performance subscription will get you access to all the pay articles. Pay articles are available without PP's for about $20 a month. Picking the trifecta in a $5,000 claimer might be easier than finding the most economical manner in which to get the best of what the new Form has to offer. And the Form continues to suggest that the horse race fan avoid those nasty old tracks and wager online, with $80 in free bets and $125 in cash being given away at the moment in an introductory computer-based wagering offer."

But the trustee has to pay rent on the space as long as the physical property is there and the trustee would like to end that expense as soon as possible. The trustee must give 21 days written notice to creditors of an asset sale. My understanding is that the asset sale will be an online auction. The trustee will likely separate out each asset group (intellectual property, furniture, library, photo file prints, photo file digital, artwork) and sell separately. There will be five to seven groups of assets auctioned. His goal is to raise as much money as possible, not sell an ongoing concern."

The Wire, The Sopranos and Game of Thrones are not celebrity reliant. (The latter was able to dispense with Sean Bean in the first series with no loss of steam.) At their best, such dramas resonate because, however far-fetched their premise, they tell awful, ringing, thematic truths about the world as it is, its powerplays, ironies and tragedies. Luck doesn't; it was surly, selfish men plotting obscurely about something or other, graceless on the small screen. Lesson to HBO? Traditional press departments are tasked with providing information by which the press dispatches publicity on upcoming races and events and the relative condition of a circuit’s equine stars. The NYRA has developed a new approach that has created a culture of distrust between the two groups. Here are a few examples which, while it appears to be much ado about inside baseball is about more than that: The elimination of anything that’s perceived as a negative whether it‘s in the public interest or not."
