"... time has stretched long since those optimistic days of more than a quarter of a century ago when the Hong Kong Jockey Club seemed to be proactive in dismantling gender barriers for female riders. Strides were made at a rapid rate in an all too short time, only to be reduced to an inch here and less there. Just like Northern Fire Ball, the club has not accelerated its advance as it might have: there has been little appetite to licence female jockeys despite adjustments since the turn-of-the-century as to how women are perceived and accepted in sport and society, in Hong Kong and in the west. Whether or not that is about to change lies in the decisions of its Licensing Committee. Just one adjustment would do it."

And that’s why his presence in the 2021 Kentucky Derby is so powerful. Who better to reaffirm the excellence of the Black men before him than a jockey who shines amid doubts? It was just a few weeks ago when he rode to victory in the Wood Memorial, galloping over 72-1 odds. He is three years removed from a vicious leg break. Who better to emphasize the courage of our trailblazers than a man who led a protest, kneeling with other jockeys for Black lives? Who better to assert our ancestor’s zeal than a rider who organized a moment of silence for victims of the COVID-19 pandemic?"

"Sylvester Carmouche won 1,348 races through a star-crossed career that began in 1978 and finished in 2013. And stayed in Louisiana. He rode Hallowed Dreams, a Louisiana jet from 1999 to 2000. That was the highlight. The lowlight was a 10-year suspension. See, Sylvester Carmouche Jr. is The Fog Jockey. He was convicted of holding Landing Officer, a longshot $2,500 claimer in the chute on a foggy night at Delta Downs and waiting for the field to come around the second time. It didn't work smoothly, the horse won by 24 lengths, just off the track record, bandages still clean. Yeah, it was sketchy. Twenty-eight years later, you have to ask right?"

How Sylvester Carmouche tells the story: "Hey, look, I don't regret it. I'm glad I'm living. What they say, nobody know. They didn't have no proof, no nothing. When we came out to ride, you couldn’t see nothing. I had my goggles on, you couldn't see nothing. It happened just like this, I backed my horse up, the outriders said I rode the race, they come out, they didn't have no film, they couldn't prove nothing,” Carmouche, 60, said. "God was too good to me so I went up to the commission and told them the truth. They like to fall out. They said, 'Sylvester, you're the first man to tell us the truth.' I said, 'God told me the truth is going to set you free.'"

He knows that a Black jockey, Oliver Lewis, won the first Derby in 1875 and that 15 of the first 28 editions of the race were won by Black jockeys, most recently Jimmy Winkfield in 1902. He is also intensely aware of the nation’s ongoing dialogue about race. Last June, when racing returned to New York, Carmouche helped organize a moment of silence at Belmont Park for those lost to the pandemic. Then he and more than a dozen fellow jockeys each took a knee in solidarity with those protesting the killing of George Floyd."

He lived with me for a long time, we were together for 30 years, and we accomplished everything. He's the leading money earner, he's the leading stakes winner, and he has a whole bunch of titles in Saratoga. He won two Derbies, he won two Eclipse Awards. I mean how high could you get? I'm sad that I'm not working for him, but it's like people say, [stuff] happens.”

Velazquez acknowledged he hasn't had contact with Cordero since the two split. Velazquez said the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a health issue involving one of his family members has kept him home when he's not riding.

"I probably should be the one to reach out to him, but he's [like] my father, he's supposed to be reaching out to me," Velazquez said. "Since COVID-19, I haven't gone anywhere. I go from [work] to my house and don't see anybody. I haven't seen him, so I haven't been able to talk to him person to person. Once I see him person to person, I definitely will talk to him.”

Cordero said he holds no ill will toward Velazquez.

"I don't have anything against him, I wish him the best," Cordero said. "I'm proud of what we accomplished."

A jockey can correct a horse from getting in, getting out, with a flick of a whip, a slap on the neck, it’s not abusive, it’s corrective, necessary. It’s instinctive and easy for a jockey, take that away and I am concerned that a dangerous job becomes more dangerous. Having said that, plenty of horses react poorly, ducking in or ducking out from the whip. I don’t have an answer for that – yet. Nobody does. That’s why we need to take it slowly, allowing for study, for change, instead of knee-jerk reaction to a bad situation. To be a strong sport, we need to self govern, the whip is a good place to start."

"Kusner, quietly determined, found hope for aspiring women jockeys in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. She was convinced that it could be applied to an equal opportunity of employment in a profession that stipulated no physical limitations other than weight. 'I looked around the racetrack and saw one guy who had worked in a laundromat, another who'd been a plumber, and they were urged to become jockeys just because they were small,' Kusner recalled recently from her home in suburban Los Angeles. 'And I'd already ridden in two Olympic Games.' With attorney Audrey Melbourne by her side – working pro bono for what she called 'a landmark case' – Kusner exhausted the commission process then took her case to a Maryland circuit court. On Sept. 27, 1968, Judge Ernest Loveless ruled in favor of Kusner and ordered the Maryland commission to issue a license."

His theatrical "Contre" reverberated through the white corridor. In a later interview, he called the open stretch a "bêtise," roughly, an "idiocy." "There will always be horses that get bad trips," he said, expressing the fear that the Open Stretch could "change the way we ride."

This week’s rise puts King comfortably into the top ten of female jockeys worldwide in the standings, which measure success in Group and Graded races worldwide. [View] the table showing how the top females ranked at the end of the January. You will notice there were only 16 in the top 500, and that 13 of those are based in either Australia or New Zealand. Which explains why King is unlikely to return to ride in the UK anytime soon. "If I was to go back home I would have to stop riding," she told the Sydney Morning Herald. "I wouldn't be able to have a career back in England. It is just a struggle. I don’t see there is a place for female jockeys over there." And later she told the Melbourne Herald-Sun: "My intention was to go back to England and ride over there. But I realised there are more opportunities for the girls here, so I changed my plans. I would be happy if I had five rides in a week at home, whereas here I can sometimes have five rides in a day."

JFC: "To my way of thinking, this kind of response (significant but restrained) makes it more likely that other racing jurisdictions will follow the French lead. I’m thinking mostly of the British Horseracing Authority, which is not naturally sympathetic to the idea but might prick up its ears if it felt the change improved the situation of female jockeys without provoking outrage among the men. But I’d say Britain already has more of a culture of female success in the saddle than France, thanks in large part to Hayley Turner but also to her fellow champion apprentices Josephine Gordon and Amy Ryan. A weight allowance here probably would provoke a faster uptake by trainers and owners, not least because there are quite a few young women around who have already proved they can win, like Hollie Doyle, Jane Elliott, Shelley Birkett, Lulu Stanford and Rachel Richardson. And there seems a ready supply of others who can become like them, 7lb claimers in their late teenage years who appear unpromising at first but get the hang of it after 30, 40 or 50 rides."

But France-Galop have already had a dip into the available figures and found that women collectively had ridden 20 winners compared to 11 at the same point of the 2016 season. François Boulard, racing director of French racing’s ruling body, said female jockeys had been given 25% more rides than last year and had been placed 130% more often. Speaking at Deauville races on Saturday, he added that the number of individual female jockeys to have had rides had gone up by more than 20%."

If young, stereotypically-masculine strength is required to compete, somehow that didn't prevent Krone, who weighed 100 pounds "soaking wet," from winning the Belmont. It also didn't prevent 105-pound Bill Shoemaker from winning four Kentucky Derbies, the last at age 54.

2. The more likely culprit is persistent gender discrimination. The best evidence comes from a 1995 study which found that, though women won less prize money than men overall, that happened because women didn't get good horses in good races. In fact, women actually won more money than men who rode similar horses in similar races. Women outperformed men with the opportunities they got, but women didn't get the opportunities they deserved.

2. How would women respond if they saw more of their own in the saddle?

The previous record was seven, set by Vicky Aragon (now Vicky Baze) at Emerald Racing Association's 1993 meet held at Yakima Meadows. The previous best at Emerald Downs had been five, in 1997. It was the first time in the state that four women had won stakes races. The previous best was two. The four each won at least 20 races last year. The local jockey colony is still predominantly male, but the women have gained respect from the men. The four stakes winners are acknowledged as talented riders, and they're getting good horses, which is a good part of the battle." [From 2007.]

The race was named for one of the best-known riders of the Northwest circuit in the 1970s, who also happened to be a young woman possessed of uncanny athletic ability and tenacity of spirit. In an era still suspicious of women as jockeys, Driggers was on a pace of winning more than 50 races a year when she retired in 1984 to marry horseman Hap Proctor, start a family, and eventually move to Ocala, Fla., where they managed the Glen Hill Farm of Leonard Lavin. You would never refer to the fit, feisty Jane Proctor as any kind of matriarch, except for the fact that no one could imagine life without her love of horses and boundless energy lighting up the landscape. Life without Jane Proctor began this week when she died from the ravages of an aggressive, malignant brain tumor. She was 61. The Thoroughbred world is less now for her loss but a better place because she was here."
