"And so as she began her investigation — 'I came to this as a racing fan' — she was under the assumption that Pennsylvania horse racing probably merited this generous annual subsidy. Only after she began reading all the state audits she could find, the drawn-out minutes of Racing Commission meetings, and the rarely noticed fiscal reports, did she realize how wrong she was. 'The more I got into it, the more shocked I became,' Ward told me. 'This is an industry that is completely hidden from public view. They've got a direct cash pipeline and they don't want anybody to know about it.' It's a story rarely told outside the racing industry, and understandably so: Horse racing is propped up by tax dollars from casinos that have nothing to do with what happens on the track or at the betting windows."

Both outfits are run the same way: the general partners in the operations put up their money to buy horses at the yearling and 2-year-old sales, and then they offer stakes in the horses to their investors. It's a long-haul game, usually, with investors buying into horses that are not, as Kumin would say, 'proven commodities.' But now they are playing Kumin's game – or, in the cases of Justify, Audible, and My Boy Jack this year, playing with him as a partner. Both Finley and Wolf, the managing partners in West Point and Starlight, said that their purchases of the stakes in the Derby contenders earlier this year followed the same script as the yearlings and 2-year-olds they buy: the general partners put up all the money and then market shares of the stakes to investors afterward."

2. "Privately, some investors indicated after the Preakness party that more than half of the 11 who joined with Stronach Group founder Frank Stronach in putting up $1 million each for one slot in the Pegasus starting gate are not willing, at least so far, to re-invest in the concept since most took a financial whipping with the first running of the race. Mike Rogers, an executive board member with the Stronach Group, conceded before the Preakness party that none of the original investors had signed up by that time to invest another $1 million in next year’s Pegasus."

3. "Only Saudi Prince Khalid Abdullah, owner of Juddmonte Farms and its Pegasus winner Arrogate, and Stronach, whose homebred Shaman Ghost finished second, apparently made money after expenses are considered. Juddmonte bought the starting slot of original Pegasus investor Coolmore for Arrogate, who earned the $7 million winner’s share of the inaugural $12 million purse, while Shaman Ghost banked $1.75 million."

4. "One Pegasus investor privately told another recently that it was the worst business deal he had ever done in terms of revenue return. Another said he could not imagine taking that kind of gamble again, while yet another said the experience turned into a 'pretty expensive party' after counting expenditures for tickets to the race and entertainment at the track for guests."

5. "A primary goal is to lure a runner from Japan following a recruiting foray to that nation by Pegasus representatives last winter that included a meeting with Japan Racing Association executives. While that trip was not fruitful in yielding a horse for the inaugural event, it opened pathways for the future, according to Rogers, who pointed to how Japanese bettors, when allowed to wager on a foreign race that includes a Japanese runner, can have a huge impact on handle."

But the polarity now between 'what they want' — 'they' in this case being a lot of people who are newly willing to put money in the thoroughbred business — and 'what they don’t want' is starker than ever. There are horse racing economies — national, international, and local — and there need to be more efficient methods both of producing the horses with the potential to achieve the various levels, and of placing the horses where they belong once their level is identified. In short, in order to improve its chances of surviving and prospering, ‘Horse Racing Inc.’ needs to take a really serious look at how it can reorganize itself."

That deal has meant higher purses, which brought better horses from out of state, and more interesting races, which gamblers love. Last Thursday’s $1.26 million handle, more than $1 million of it bet at casinos and tracks nationwide that pick up Canterbury's simulcast TV signal, marked the track's highest for a weeknight. That same night a 79-1 shot paid $161 to win, a track record."

Total all-sources handle Monday at Belmont Park was $10,923,486, a 10.1 percent increase over last year’s total handle figure of $9,913,636. Ontrack handle Monday was $2,008,956, a 9.3 percent increase over last year’s figure of $1,837,245.

Attendance was 6,837, down 109 from last year’s figure of 6,946.

On Monday, Belmont hosted Big Apple Showcase Day, a 10-race, six-stakes card entirely of New York-bred races. There were 85 betting interests compared to 73 on last year’s 10-race Memorial Day card. The Poker Stakes was the highlight of last year’s 10-race Memorial Day card.

For years, the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap was the feature on Memorial Day. In 2013, the last year the race was run on Memorial Day, total all-sources handle was $16,191,645 and attendance was 11,664 on an 11-race card that also included the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps, the Grade 1 Acorn, and the Grade 2 Sands Point. [All were moved to the Belmont Stakes card in 2014.]

"In the United States, the biggest thoroughbred producer in the world, the decrease is slowing down. While in 2010, the decrease of foals against 2009 was 12.7, in the next two years it was 10.3 and 6.2% respectively). Last year the decrease was just 2.1% according to assessment. The United States, however, provide another perspective on the causes of the decrease, although the relation to the economic crisis is more than clear -- the number of races decreases. While in 1980 to 1989 North America saw 463,818 races, in the next decade it was just 375,308, in 2000 to 2009 368,154."

"The largest source of Breeders’ Cup revenue is wagering activity with approximately 10 percent of overall revenues in 2013 derived from wagering at Santa Anita and throughout the Southern California simulcast and ADW network. Another 25 percent of revenues come from simulcasting both within North America and internationally. Obviously our wagering public is a vital part of the success of the Breeders’ Cup and we continually search for ways to boost handle whether through cross promotions with ADW partners or special event participation at brick and mortar simulcast sites. As I mentioned the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge has been a tremendous source of growth and we look to expand upon that with our new marketing partnership with the Daily Racing Form.... Entry fees at 11.4 percent, ticketing revenues at 16.2 percent, and marketing partnerships at 5.8 percent round out the other major revenue components. We certainly expect to see growth in the sponsorship area as an outgrowth of our brand enhancement program focusing on the Breeders’ Cup as an international luxury brand and our partnership with NBC Sports."

Like the worst of Wall Street's excesses, IEAH's fortunes were illusions produced by unscrupulous, occasionally illegal methods. They turned to Rick Dutrow knowing he'd get results, no matter how many suspensions for doping his horses he'd have to serve. They pulled their main funding from an accused Ponzi schemer, since indicted by the federal government, who funneled millions from a host of hapless victims to keep the stables going. Soon enough the cash spigot was cut off, Dutrow committed one too many violations, and the revolution collapsed, leaving only the sign."

"Handle through two of the three leading national account-wagering platforms in the United States declined in the first quarter of 2011 compared with the first quarter of 2010, according to the platform operators and regulators in Oregon, where the platforms have betting hubs. The decline signals a contraction in the account-wagering market for perhaps the first time. Combined with a slight increase for the third large account-wagering operator the overall 7.9 percent decline is the first significant quarter-to-quarter drop for the leading operators in the account-wagering sector, which has been the only growing component of the national wagering market over the past several years. The decline far exceeded a 1.8 percent contraction in race days during the quarter and was a significant component in an 8.5 percent decline in total wagering on U.S. races for the first three months of the year."
