"Gentlemen of the Racing Form ads, I have been going to the races for almost half a century, very likely longer than any of you. I almost certainly have been to more racetracks (about 60) and seen more races (about 20,000) than any of you. I happen to have a lifetime profit on the horses, something I doubt that any of you can truly claim. But if anybody offered me $30 or $40 or an unspecified fee to show him how to make money betting the horses, I would say: Forget it. Anybody who tries to get rich handicapping is crazy. It can't be done. There are no systems. Playing the horses is an entertainment, like going to the movies, and you have to pay the admission fees. What's great about betting on horses is not that you can make money at it but that it's more fun and cheaper in the long run than many pleasures. Like owning a boat. Or traveling in Europe." (Saved for mentions of Frederick Davis' patterns and Tom Ainslie's private method.)

Legendary plungers had always been drawn to horseflesh, but the handicapper signified something different from the likes of such easy come, easy go speculators as John Warne Gates, whose large wager on an English race gained him the nickname 'Bet a Million' Gates. The handicapper was by contrast a stealthy and enterprising contrarian bestowed with hard-won knowledge, patience, and an eye for opportunity. In a sport and culture rife with con artists and touts, he made his money fair and square, which is what linked him in the imagination with the self-possessed business tycoon. Both shared the gospel that hard work, not luck, was what separated winners and losers."

Those numbers jump up significantly at Gulfstream, where Shug’s fresh faces win at 21% (43% in the money) with a $3.82 ROI. A good chunk of the profit came over the past month. So far in 2014, McGaughey’s 3-year-old firsters are three-for-nine with a second and two thirds (33% win/66% in the money), good for a very strong $4.33 ROI (including 5-1 Peter Island Mar. 1 and 9-2 La Madrina Mar. 29 in addition to Run of the River)."
