The most subtle problem that I have with those who are tempted to prematurely anoint Flightline as an all-time great is that they tend to either miss or undervalue a criterion that I consider to be of great importance when it comes to judging greatness in a racehorse: an ability to overcome serious adversity."

One has run just five times, the other ran 21 times, won the Triple Crown, was a two-time Horse of the Year and had his picture on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. They're not going to make a movie about Flightline. They are different horses from different eras, equine apples and oranges. Is Flightline as good as Secretariat, or the best horse since Secretariat? There's no answer to that question."

"Dave and I would stroll for an hour, sometimes longer. Each day, he got fresher, tormenting the pony, biting his withers, kicking at him, leaping in the air, bucking. On the last day I ponied him, we walked onto the Oklahoma. I figured I had to let him do something, he grabbed the pony by the withers, shaking him like a piggy bank. The pony finally had enough. He went left, kicked out and Dave went right, the leather shank sliding through my hand until I was holding only the tip. Dave looked me dead in the eye and tossed his head, the shank hit the ground. He was loose. But, he didn't run. I squeezed the pony, sidling next to Dave and reaching for the shank, he jogged four steps and stopped, staring at me. We did this four, five, six times. Each time as I had the shank at my fingertips, Dave would scoot off, then stop and do it again. Jim Bond, at least I'm pretty sure it was Jim Bond, watched it all from the gap. He and I finally made eye contact. He knew what I was thinking and I knew what he was thinking. As I inched closer and reached for the shank, Dave spun right and right into Bond’s awaiting hands. I had never felt such relief. I took the shank and Dave didn't make a wrong move the rest of the ride. It was just a game. He won. He knew it. I knew it."

The half was run in a brutal :44 1/5. Something had to give. Vasquez then did something he had never done nor would he ever do again to Ruffian. He gave her a short crack of the whip over her right shoulder. Ruffian’s head was back in front. Another crack and it was a neck in front, but the little filly kept battling back. Ruffian, who went through virtually her entire career without having to change leads, switched to her right lead, but still couldn’t pull away. Three more whacks of the whip, and finally, inside the sixteenth pole, Ruffian began to shake loose. In a few strides, she was clear and home free."

Noted: "In all my years following racing, I had never seen or heard of a top horse breaking down, and the thought of a horse suffering a fatal injury and having to be euthanized never crossed my mind."

Really? Triple Crown winners Sir Barton, Omaha, and Assault all lost more races than they won, combining for 40 victories but also for 51 losses in their careers. Were they truly great? Alysheba, Spectacular Bid and Sunday Silence, who combined for eight Eclipse Awards, including three of a golden hue, in their careers, all won the Derby and Preakness but lost the Belmont. A freak like Frankel is once in a lifetime, and the concentration of genes for speed, strength, athleticism and more that makes him what he is will be slowly diluted over the generations. His name, though, will endure since the final race of Frankel's career does not mark the end of the story, but the start of a new chapter.

He makes it look too easy. (See, for comparison: Zenyatta, Black Caviar.) "Frankel has transcended the sport. The bookmakers have given up, the punters have given up, the rivals have given up. There is simply no point taking him on any more. His exceptional ability and bullet-proof consistency have seen him smash the glass ceiling of handicap ratings and now, as an eternal 1-20 shot, he has conquered the sport itself. But being so exceptional -- perfect, even -- has somehow failed to endear him to the wider public, and this tells us something we would never have known without experiencing this enigma. In their sporting heroes people don't actually want a perfect champion. They want some vulnerability. There is simply not enough drama in this story of equine perfection."

His greatest performance, of course, was the Belmont Stakes, where he dueled with Sham at a seemingly suicidal pace for three-quarters of a mile and proceeded to draw away to a 31-length victory. The prevailing track record, Gallant Man's 2:26 3/5, was considered almost unassailable; only one other winner in the Belmont's history had run faster than 2:28. When Secretariat crossed the finish line in 2:24 flat, he had raced into a new dimension."
