John Sadler can’t be blamed if he thinks he has the favorite in Iotapa, last seen finishing second to champion Beholder in the Santa Anita Oaks, while Ciao Bella Luna, who began her career in style with the late Dennis Patterson, has found a happy place with Jerry Hollendorfer and won the Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland to show it."

"... the North American International Catalogue Standards Committee will implement a system in 2014 that will award black type to a non-listed stakes only if it meets new criteria based on a composite of four speed figures for the race’s top four finishers. This is a novel approach, something that has never been done in this country. The graded stakes system does not use speed figures to help determine the quality of the starters in a race, but rather past racing success, the historical importance of a race, and the number of graded stakes winners in the field, among many factors."

Further complicating the task is that the rest of the committee comprises racing secretaries, many of whom have a vested interest in the number of graded stakes run at their tracks."

Yet the number of stakes awarded graded status has remained level: 475 awarded in 2006 and 474 awarded in 2011. As things stand today, having 2-year-old races make up 13 percent of the Grade 1 schedule -- when only eight percent of the total races run are for 2-year-olds -- exaggerates this division’s importance. Assigning Grade 1 ratings to races that don’t warrant them only cheapens the entire graded system."
