He called the press conference to announce the Derby positive himself, before any public regulatory announcement. He went on multiple national news programs on his own accord and created such bad narrative for the sport that it spun off at least two biting late-night show parodies. His drawn-out legal battles in front of boards and judges have furthered a culture in the sport that consequences can be evaded with enough lawyer power, and the cycle just seems to continue because of it."

It only seemed like the ceremony had taken 10 years when Alex Waldrop, the president and chief executive of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association who always presents the final award of the night, opened the envelope and said, 'The 2007 Horse of the Year is Gun Runner.'"

But he is also and undeniably a one-dimensional, front-running freak-out who requires an uncontested lead, without which … he flops. Roughed up early in the Preakness, Bayern never got close to the front and was beaten a country mile. Even with the lead, he fizzled to last in the Travers; was passed by a 40-to-1 shot in the Arkansas Derby; and was disqualified in the Derby Trial after physically mauling a nonentity named Embellishing Bob. It was a shiny circular foal tag, the kind placed upon halters to identify young thoroughbreds. Simply, it read, 'Zenyatta.' In the moments before the Horse of the Year announcement was made on Monday, Moss held onto that tag and to the hand of her husband, Jerry Moss, and together they hoped that their 6-year-old mare would not be denied the sport's top honor as she was in 2008 and 2009. Third time's the charm."
