It is sad that we have already lost two Polytracks in the U.S. and now we are losing yet another synthetic track at Meydan. The U.S. is the only major racing nation who race on dirt. When the Dubai World Cup was on dirt it was only ever won by the U.S. and the UAE; it was not a World Cup. Since it has been run on Tapeta, the winners have come from four different countries, including Animal Kingdom from the U.S. On two occasions there were only seven runners on dirt and last year on Tapeta there were 16 runners and overfilled. On Dubai World Cup night of 2014, the six Tapeta races were won by six different countries. It was fair, formful and above all safe."

"Beyond the cause-and-effect of money, bloodlines, or whatever may be driving the numbers, there is a less concrete, but no-less-important factor: enthusiasm. Racing in the Far East generates the kind of public clamour that no longer exists in countries such as Britain and the U.S. Sure, those of us actually involved in racing in the West love it with a passion, but the sport just doesn’t have the kind of public reach that saw more than 60,000 people stay on after racing at Nakayama to pay tribute to retiring legend Orfevre. The scenes at Meydan that followed Just A Way and Gentildonna’s victories were arguably the best the meeting had seen since Dubai Millennium won the renewal for which he was named. Just A Way cemented himself as just about the best horse on the planet with his six-length romp in the G1 Dubai Duty Free, while the 2013 Japan Cup winner Gentildonna emerged triumphant from the kind of brawl she seems to relish in the G1 Sheema Classic. It is surely from this pool of horses that the Dubai World Cup meeting is likely to draw its future stars."

So, where are the good American horses who could be in Dubai this week? And why have they stayed away? Is it because – Animal Kingdom aside – U.S.-based runners have performed below expectations in recent years? Is it Meydan’s Tapeta surface? Are trainers intimidated by more stringent medication requirements or fearful their horses will not “go on” after a taxing trip to Dubai? The perception may be yes, but the truth is, at the very least, debatable."

In the United States, brave attempts to fill in a moat of drugs and dirt seem to have been defeated, for now, by vested interests. "Four have been taken by horses pressing the pace or tracking the leader, with nine taken by trackers in third, fourth or fifth. Winners coming from mid-pack in fields of at least 10 horses number 15, while seven have come from at or near the back of the pack. So 58 percent of this season's Meydan synthetic winners - 22 of 38 - have been closers." Quite different from what one jockey expected prior to Meydan's opening: "Horses coming up from behind will find it very difficult so it’s going to suit horses that like racing up in the first five." Certainly there will be a far greater geographical spread of competition than at the Breeders' Cup, which bills itself as the World Thoroughbred Championships.... [At Santa Anita] there is now distressing talk of the synthetic track being restored to dirt. One conceivable reward for this shocking regression might be a permanent contract to stage the Breeders' Cup. If that were so, the painful but necessary catharsis currently underway in the American sport would be disastrously reversed by its reactionaries. And their inevitable isolation would provide an obvious cue for Meydan."

The question is whether the Sheikh still has the energy, the clout and, for that matter, the money to make it happen. The Breeders' Cup awarded itself the subtitle 'World Thoroughbred Championships' several years ago, but it will be back on dirt this year after two years on an artificial surface. Now that even Santa Anita is apparently ready to reinstall dirt too, American racing seems more inward-looking than ever."
