Focusing on the data entry and storage aspects, this article offers practical recommendations for organizing spreadsheet data to reduce errors and ease later analyses. The basic principles are: be consistent, write dates like YYYY-MM-DD, do not leave any cells empty, put just one thing in a cell, organize the data as a single rectangle (with subjects as rows and variables as columns, and with a single header row), create a data dictionary, do not include calculations in the raw data files, do not use font color or highlighting as data, choose good names for things, make backups, use data validation to avoid data entry errors, and save the data in plain text files."

Of that group, 54% never started again. For those 46% of horses who did race again, the fatal breakdown rate is 3.1%, much higher than the 0.18% for all starters. Those numbers certainly trigger a red flag, and Parkin said enhanced initial information would provide superior predictive data ... Parkin said consistency in receiving information on non-fatal injuries—and how they are characterized and reported—would be key to improving the predictive abilities of the model. It's a challenge because the fatality rate is so low, less than two per 1,000 starts."

"The debate over official data is one facet of a still broader set of questions: How should sports data from any source, official or unofficial, be regulated, monitored and purchased? Who should settle a dispute over whether an in-play bet was won or lost? Does real-time data from a sporting event, like the sounds of a musical performance, have a claim to royalties and copyright protection for those who produce it? By creating a sort of monopoly, could a mandate for official data actually do more harm than good? ... Some legal experts, like Ryan Rodenberg, an associate professor of sports law at Florida State University, believe that, as with musical recordings and other copyrighted material, courts will find that real-time sports data is owned by those who produce it: the leagues and their players. Others dismiss that view. Marc Edelman, a professor of law at Baruch College, said he believed that only 'pre-scripted' events were subject to copyright — meaning that while professional wrestling performances might qualify, football, basketball and other true competitions would not."

At the forefront of his effort to put out past performances in Sports Eye, his publication that had only given entries, results and selections, was an obstacle called the track program. The program printed for the tracks at Roosevelt and Yonkers was a product of Doc Robbins. That product was a monopoly of sorts and Mr. Cohen had to figure out how to get access to information in advance of race day in order to provide “his version” of past performances in a timely fashion. Ultimately what he did was pay off Robbins’ employees to provide him a minimal amount of information that would allow for his staff to connect-the-dots and provide a competitive product."

The TJC and TRA should lead our industry into its digital future by building a highly functional, but accessible website that would allow fans, handicappers, academics and industry professionals the ability to access its database at the most basic level. For the good of the sport, this information should be freely available. What drives the popularity of the NFL, MLB and the NBA? Gambling and its close cousin, fantasy sports. Well, horse racing was the first fantasy sport. We have a 150 year history of data collection and a long standing respect for its analysis–think Lowe, Tesio, Ziemba, Beyer. Sadly, we have been left behind in the race for gaming dollars and consumer interest."

Late scratches, surface changes, race distance changes, jockey changes, equipment changes, weight changes are all part of the conundrum when building quality applications for customers and all of these “next generation” modern retail products, RaceLens included, don’t account for all of them. This is exactly the kind of systems STATS is very good at building — a step further back from retail products — to the actual pipes that supply retail products. Imagine, for instance, a statcast-like application for horse racing. Right now, those applications are pipe dreams, because the data pipes that are needed to build them do not exist."

I'm talking about the results of races on a day to day basis — the stuff you used to see in your newspaper on a daily basis and now are PDF files on DRF, Equibase or Bris. The very thing that horse players need in order to wager (and, in my opinion, wager more frequently), is priced at such a high level that only the very, very serious can dabble in large data analysis."

Starts in our case study dropped precipitously (-28.3 percent) during the 19-year period, from 33,785 in the 1994-95 fiscal year to 24,235 in the 2012-13 fiscal year. With the number of starts now available, calculating racing fatality rates is straightforward. The story is now just a little different. In very recent years, the overall racing fatality rate is decreasing and decidedly lower than the comparatively deadly years starting in 2004. However, the racing fatality rate for the earliest years in the time series is lower than the 2012-13 fiscal year. This most recent overall fatality rate for our California case study is nearly identical to the national racing fatality rate from the EID for the 2013 calendar year."

"RDC intends to squeeze the data for all it can get and somewhere along the line, it may well try to finish what Savill could not. But it would be every bit as short-sighted now as it was back then. The value in pre-race data derives from what people use it for, which is principally betting. The more information punters have, the more likely they are to bet on a race. Conversely, if the supply is reduced – and hiking the price of something does tend to have that effect – then so too is the inclination to bet. Extracting every possible penny from pre-race data might look smart in the short term, but if it reduces betting turnover in the longer term, it will be pointless and ultimately counterproductive."

First, they are investing in their own analytics infrastructure. The NBA is a leader in this field, as evidenced by its move to install motion-tracking cameras in every arena and create a vast statistical database for media and fans. By doing so, the NBA will be able to more forcefully posit that it is a direct competitor of a company offering a service similar to Motorola. Two, numerous sports leagues are making a huge push into the lucrative and data-rich fantasy sports space. This calculated move arose after Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006 and included a narrow carve-out for fantasy sports. Third, some leagues have moved to partner with former courtroom adversaries. Who is the NBA’s collaborator in connection with the high-tech cameras? None other than STATS."

"Last Friday, a race nearly started at the wrong point on the track because of confusion generated by the program. The race was to be run at about 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, but because of wet conditions was run at 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track. In the program, the distance was noted by its fractional equivalent, 11/16, which racing people don’t use. Because the fraction looks like 1 1/16, you can understand how the gate initially was put at the sixteenth pole, the starting point for a mile-and-a-sixteenth race, before the problem was corrected."

"Of all of journalism’s recent evolutions, data-driven reporting is one of the most celebrated. But as much as we should toast data’s powers, we must acknowledge its cost: Assembling even a small dataset can require hours of tedious work, deterring even the most disciplined of journalists and their editors. Fortunately, there’s an affordable -- and amazing -- tool that can make the impossible easy: Amazon’s Mechanical Turk." Pro Publica explains.
