He accelerated past Life Is Good as if driving a Formula One car against a station wagon. In open space, galloping toward history, it was like witnessing Maradona or Etta James in their prime. I was dealing with a bad stomach flu, and it took this sad human being to a better place."

Should he be regarded alongside Secretariat, Man o’ War and a couple of dozen others who have captured the public’s imagination over the years? His trainer, John Sadler, thinks so. He quoted Bud Delp, who trained Spectacular Bid, a staple of conversation about great horses. 'He's the best horse ever to look through a bridle,' Sadler said. 'We’re talking since Secretariat, Seattle Slew.' For the colt's owners, a tough decision looms. The partnership ... shared a $3 million first-place check. But if they retire Flightline to the breeding shed, they are looking at a minimum $60 million payday." (They retired him, not even 24 hours after the Breeders' Cup.)

His name was Flightline, and his work was done, for the day, and as a racehorse, perhaps forever. Alphabet retired the following year and became a stud, siring a generation of horses that included many who were also named after soups, including Egg Drop, Italian Wedding, Bless My Soup, Damascus Soup, Noodle Soup, I'm Just Souper, and No Soup for You. In terms of earnings, Alphabet was not the most successful stud horse in history, but he undoubtedly had a good time trying. In 2015, he hung up his stud spurs and moved into assisted living at Old Friends Farm, a facility for racehorses emeriti in Georgetown, Kentucky."

"The larger point: Any detail – however sordid or sad – is useful information to a serious bettor. If crop use is redefined, that’s handicapping information. If the track is causes breakdowns, that’s handicapping information. (I mean, sad handicapping information, but handicapping information just the same). If Bob Baffert is suspended and not sending out brilliant 2-year-olds, that’s handicapping information. There is no disenfranchising the serious horseplayer. They will bet just as ambitiously on a sport in crisis as one in paradise. But let’s take a wider view. Racing as a pari-mutuel enterprise lives in a box. It’s a comfortable box for those in it, and a durable box. And while gambling has long been vital to the popularity of the biggest sports in America (and the world), the explosion of legalized sports gambling in the U.S. has thrown back that curtain for good ... but racing soars when the sport connects with those who do not have a TwinSpires account. When a horse, or a narrative, surfaces that engages beyond the rail, and beyond the walls of the racetrack itself and into family rooms and man caves and Derby parties. When people who do not follow horse racing are talking about a horse."

"I can't tell you what their priorities are, or what they were looking for or what their parameters are. I can only tell you that the thing they've got to do is look in the mirror. Whoever those 30 vets are, I hope they're listening, and if not they can go back and listen to the archive. You can say you heard it from me first – bottom line is, it's a shame that a horse that I work on regularly and know well, Vino Rosso, wins a race like that and the only thing they can discuss or talk about is the fact that a horse broke down. So those 30 people, they should print a list of hem in the Paulick Report or the Blood-Horse or whatever, they should be held responsible for making, ultimately a decision that could cause the demise of this industry. It's past the time where everybody just passes the buck. It really all comes down to, the buck's gotta stop somewhere."

There are not a lot of things I know for sure in this game, but I definitely know that the synthetic is better on the horses. Noted: "We evaluated him, he had a severe fracture, he had a questionable blood supply, and we know from our experience that those horses don’t make it," said Carpenter. "We could have prolonged the agony, which would have made it easier on us, because we could go back to the media and say, 'He's had a serious injury, he's having surgery tomorrow, a team of surgeons are coming in to get the job done, we'll keep you posted on how he does," said Carpenter. "He would have probably lasted a week." That message is more palatable to the wider public, said Carpenter. "They interpret that as, 'you've tried — you didn't just discard the horse.' But we knew that wasn't the right decision for that particular horse and that particular injury."

Pletcher said Vino Rosso — who had won the Gold Cup at Santa Anita in May — had done so well in recent weeks that "we were anxious for the race to get here. He galloped over the track this week like he loved it," Pletcher said. "We were on pins and needles, he was doing so wonderfully." [Vino Rosso earned a Beyer of 111 for winning the BC Classic and is going to stud at Spendthrift.]

2. Not 150 yards from where Pletcher's horses were housed this week is the stable of Ganbat, which was understandably subdued on Sunday morning, with employees quietly going about their business, walking horses around the ring outside the barn. Ganbat was not there. A friend of his said he was devastated, that he "feels the weight of the sport on his shoulders."

3. McGaughey said he thought Santa Anita "did a terrible job" with the track surface. "They want to make it like a beach. It doesn't work," he said. "The best horse won the race. The second horse would have been second. But I had been warning my friends that they'd look at the charts and be amazed at what they’d see, how far horses would be separated. I was hoping the track would tighten down as the week went on. It didn't."

Because the general public does not accept the whipping of race horses, whipping must be abolished. "Basketball players when they sprain their ankle badly, they tape 'em up and they get time off and everything. (But) When a horse does it, nobody tells the story that sometimes you have to (euthanize) it. You have to humanely put 'em down because you can't repair them. If you try, they're going to suffer more because the blood flow is not there. There's a lot of issues. Nobody wants to tell that. It's a sad story."

Bravo describing Blue Prize's winning trip in the post-race press conference:

"Well, there is honestly so many different emotions I've got going on. The easiest part of it all was probably the race. She really took control down the backside ... she broke from the gate really relaxed, comfortable underneath me. They ran away from me a little further. We expected it to be, so didn't want to panic because I knew she was so sharp. We got down the backside, it just made me feel so comfortable. Just watching the pace on the front end, seemed like everyone was working. But kept an eye on Midnight Bisou. You can't disrespect a champion filly like that. But down the backside, looked like we took over and passed her pretty handily before we got to the turn. We got into the turn, starting going around Johnny, kind of hollered because it kind of got a little tight, the inside horse came out a little bit, so had to give him a little room. When I'm doing that, kind of lost a little bit of ground ourselves. But when we turned for home, Blue Prize knew who she had to pass. She went after Serengeti Empress. And honestly, inside the last 16th of the mile, it was just a dream come true. It really was. It got so for real for me. It was time like stopped, and Ignacio got me my dream."

The only European-based winner at the two-day fixture, Iridessa clung on gamely by a neck to also secure a breakthrough win at the meeting for Wayne Lordan. Her narrow success was a fourth at the highest level, and Lordan, 37, has been in the plate for each victory. While the meeting was largely a disappointment for the European contigent, Iridessa ensured it was not a complete blank. The victory also puts O'Brien in exalted company, with his father Aidan, Vincent O'Brien and John Oxx the only other Irish-based trainers to have won a Breeders' Cup race."

"A racing rule that acknowledges that interference has occurred in a race but gives the stewards the latitude to decide whether it affected the outcome of the race is absurd. In the case of the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic, the stewards acknowledged interference took place in the first few steps of a mile and a quarter race. I would suggest that the way the rule is written attempts to impose clairvoyant skills that the stewards simply cannot and do not possess. The state-by-state racing laws need a substantial legal review and standardization to insure continuity throughout the country."
