Such an uncreative, copycat concept for the site displays neither vision nor an understanding of what the community has been working toward for many years. What’s worse, the idea that Assembly Square is being touted as a model for Suffolk Downs misses the point of making Suffolk Downs a best-in-class transit oriented development. Assembly Square is certainly not a model for Suffolk Downs. Assembly Square is a haven for cookie-cutter, generic 'anywhere in America' big-box stores and office centers with an abundance of parking that say 'drive in, shop, work, and drive away' – not a particularly sustainable or appealing message."

Revere’s first-year mayor, Brian Arrigo, said Waterfront Square could be a proving ground for economic development, adding Revere to the list of inner-ring suburbs with potential for job creation.

His immediate predecessor, Dan Rizzo, backed a proposed $1 billion casino at Suffolk Downs racetrack that lost out to Steve Wynn’s Mystic River site in Everett. And a statewide ballot question in November would open the door to a potential slots parlor at a trailer park property in Revere next to Suffolk Downs. But Arrigo says it’s time for the oceanfront city to look beyond gaming as an economic savior.

“The fact that there’s so much interest in Revere along the Blue Line, we might be selling ourselves a little bit short if we want to go forward with that,” Arrigo said. “Now that our chances of having a casino are gone, we have an opportunity to build an economy, really.”

A former city councilor with private-sector consulting experience, Arrigo sees potential for luring a corporate headquarters to the 38-acre former Wonderland Greyhound Park. The property was acquired by the owners of the Suffolk Downs in 2010 after Massachusetts voters banned greyhound racing. The city has discussed a master plan with ownership to encourage redevelopment of the property ...

And speculation continues to swirl around the development potential of Suffolk Downs itself, where a limited schedule of just six live races is taking place this summer and fall.

“It’s the elephant in the room, and I look forward to working and discussing with (Boston) Mayor (Martin) Walsh on a collaborative effort to make sure everyone’s on the same page,” Arrigo said.

"The presumed favorite to win the Boston license has long been the politically connected Suffolk Downs, which partnered in 2011 with Caesars Entertainment to create a proposal for a $1 billion project that includes a casino, 450 hotel rooms, restaurants, shops, and a renovated horse track. But that has not deterred Wynn, who for years has wanted in on Boston. Like many developers, he believes that the area’s wealth, tourism, and international appeal make it one of the last great untapped gambling markets in the country. He started looking here as far back as late 2007, when it first appeared that the state might legalize casinos. More recently, he poked around the Seaport with the developer Joe Fallon (Menino quashed that idea immediately, Wynn’s lobbyist says), before buddying up with Patriots owner Bob Kraft in late 2011 to pitch a casino beside Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. That bid—a direct challenge to Suffolk Downs—appeared to have a legitimate shot, but when town residents revolted five months later, electing anti-casino selectmen to oppose the project, Wynn had to go slouching back to Vegas. A developer named David Nunes was still out there with a proposal for a casino in Milford, but Gary Loveman, the Ceasars CEO, felt triumphant."

"It’s undoubtedly true that in the age of social media, it’s become very easy for anybody to peer behind the news curtain and see the chaotic raw material from which it is produced. But that in no way weakens the onus on responsible and experienced news editors to filter that material and form it into a fast, deep and accurate report. Indeed, the value added by those editors has never been more obvious than it is in situations like this one." Re: http://www.buzzfeed.com/jwherrman/the-media-doesnt-own-the-story-anymore "The media's new and unfamiliar job is to provide a framework for understanding the wild, unvetted, and incredibly intoxicating information that its audience will inevitably see -- not to ignore it."

"Which brings us to the most wrenching change for news organizations confronted by an event like Boston: News gathering and reporting — an intrinsically messy hodgepodge of verifying facts and debunking chatter — is now done in front of readers. Instead of waiting for a carefully crafted report on the news or a front page, readers are now in the 'fog of war' with the participants and reporters and officials and everybody else. Whether we like it or not, this isn’t going to change — given readers’ hunger for news on such days, news organizations can’t remain silent about reports until they’ve been verified with officials and subjected to the organization’s own system of scrutiny. The chaos of breaking news is no longer something out of which coverage arises — it’s the coverage itself."

Suddenly, it seemed, Boston had handed a lone teenager the power to force everyone indoors; would others watch and crave it too? The longer-term implications of shutting down Boston are troubling, as well. If we come to accept the notion that the best way to protect a city is to keep it clear, then we will have abridged our own freedom of assembly."
