Auditing AI Chatbots During the Galway West and Dublin Central Byelections

"In the weeks leading up to the byelections in Galway West and Dublin Central, we simulated citizen-AI interactions by asking [a] set of election-related test questions to four popular AI chatbots (Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and xAI’s Grok)":

We asked each chatbot a set of 194 questions covering a range of relevant topics on two separate occasions, 14 and 7 days before voters go to the polls on 22 May. Our aim was to assess:

- Do they provide citizens with accurate election information?
- Which sources do they rely on, and how does this vary across chatbots?
- Who do they platform when they answer questions, and who is left out?

....
The largest share of citations is directed towards mainstream news sites, and this is where the first evidence of source curation by chatbots can be found. While the Irish Times is a common source across all providers, ChatGPT and Gemini never refer to RTÉ. Meanwhile, despite not ranking among the top three news sources for the other chatbots, Gript is the number one news source cited by Gemini.

We find that xAI’s Grok is the most likely to use social media in responses, while Gemini most frequently refers to YouTube and content from Reddit. ChatGPT appeared less likely to rely on social media compared to the other chatbots.

IMO, this points to an undesirable side effect of paywalls in the news media.
While it's vitally important for media companies to protect their means of income,
an unwelcome side effect is that the introduction of paywalls has resulted in
AI chatbots sidelining mainstream news media sources which they cannot access reliably,
in favour of what is effectively disinformation from less trustworthy sites like Gript.

Take a bow, John Nelson Darby:

John Nelson Darby, the fella who came up with the concept of "the Rapture", was a Church of Ireland curate in Co. Wicklow. Always assumed it was a yank.

If you've ever seen American televangelists ranting about Jesus secretly swooping down to save the righteous before destroying the earth, this is where it comes from. It’s not actually normal Christianity apparently, it’s not really in the bible anywhere but this headtheball popularised it in the 19th century. The Yank fundamentalists absolutely lap this up.

The history of it is even more interesting:

He was born in England and then studied in Trinity and was a Church of Ireland pastor here. He famously converted a load of Catholics in the village but ended up resigning because the church only accepted the conversions as legitimate if they swore an oath to the British King.

Despite being English himself, he seems to genuinely have believed in religion as separate to the politics of the time, which I kind of admire tbh. So he quits, and shortly after, he's out riding in Wicklow when the horse sends him flying. He suffers a serious bang to the head.

While he's recovering from the concussion, he starts coming up with this mental end-of-the-world theology that eventually took over the US.

TL;DR: We could have been spared an unbelievable amount of absolute bollocks if some 19th century prod hadn’t been flung off a horse in rural Co. Wicklow.

Here's the bad news:

A report by the Hope and Courage Collective, which works to build resilience in communities against rising far-right hate and disinformation, has found a widening gap between public attitudes and political discourse [in the media]: a relatively small number of far-right actors disproportionately influence public political debate through online amplification, visible protests, and repeated narratives. Public attitudes are becoming steadily more inclusive, but political rhetoric risks legitimising scapegoating and that the far-right ... "is shaping the conversation".

But on the other hand, these survey results are downright heartwarming:

Year-on-year datasets tracking changes in public sentiment in Ireland between 2024 and 2025 show that 66% agree that immigrants contribute positively to Irish culture and community, which is up 2% up from 64% in 2024.

79% believe working-class people are struggling due to systemic inequality which is also up 2% from 77% in 2024.

Those who believe wealthy people are successful because they were given more opportunities than others has risen from 63% in 2024 to 69% in 2025.

The number of people who support the freedom of transgender people to live their lives is up 5% up from 70% in 2024.

80% agree that Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities face greater barriers to success than white people, up 5% up from 75% in 2024.

There is a particular tell, when a “spontaneous people’s protest” isn’t quite what it claims to be. It isn’t the placards. It isn’t the high-vis vests. It isn’t even the tractors. Ireland has plenty of legitimate reasons to bring a tractor to town, and a country built on agricultural grievance has every right to express it loudly. The tell is something subtler. It’s the moment someone in the crowd, their face contorted with what is supposed to be anger about diesel, screams “What’s a woman?” at a passing TD.

From _Lessons from the Malahide Viaduct collapse_, a post-mortem on the serious failure of the main Dublin-Belfast railway line here in Ireland in 2009:

This failure is a reminder of
the mundane but typically critical role
played by human factors in structural
collapse. By 2009, it appears that the
knowledge and information relating to
the scour susceptibility of the Malahide
Viaduct resided in the heads of a number
of individuals who had left the [Iarnrod Eireann engineering] division,
rather than in a formal system that was
accessible to the engineers responsible
for the structure. In an era where the
concept of a ‘job for life’ is becoming more
uncommon, and with engineers moving ever
more frequently from job to job and role
to role, often taking corporate knowledge
with them, this failure highlights the very
real risks faced by asset management
organisations, due to the threat of corporate
memory loss.

But what is new in the research is that about a quarter of voters combine anti-establishment opinions with beliefs in strange conspiracy theories that have been especially amplified on social media. Some 34% of voters believe a small, secret group of people is responsible for making all major decisions in world politics; 28% believe groups of scientists manipulate, fabricate, or suppress evidence in order to deceive the public; and 24% believe experiments involving new drugs or technologies are routinely carried out on the public without their knowledge or consent.

There is absolutely no substantive and verifiable evidence for any of these conspiracies and that so many people believe them is deeply troubling. It raises serious questions about where Irish people are getting their information and how reliable it is.

Abeba Birhane has written a great op-ed for the Irish Times on the topic:

FRT mislabels and miscategorises faces with dark complexions. In the US alone, six people have so far been wrongfully arrested and detained due to errors, all of whom are black. It is unknown how many misidentified people may have taken plea deals. Robust scientific research confirms higher error rates of FRT identifying darker-skinned people. Yet, Mr O’Sullivan claimed FRT has a 99 per cent accuracy rate, citing a US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) report, at the pre-legislative hearing.

For this 99 per cent claim, Mr O’Sullivan cherry-picked the best-performing algorithm out of hundreds of algorithms that NIST evaluated, an algorithm called “cloudwalk_mt_007″. This algorithm is developed by CloudWalk Technology, a Chinese company known for aiding mass surveillance of the Uyghur population. Crucial information on how their algorithms operate is kept secret.

NIST evaluated the algorithm using high-quality, clean images collected from US visa applications, border kiosks and mugshots. But An Garda Síochána’s stated intention is to use any imagery it legally holds or can access. The gardaí's input images will be drawn from CCTV (unreliable due to camera angle, distance, position and lighting), often containing multiple faces in a single image (a major challenge for FRT algorithms), and blurry images. To cite NIST’s laboratory study for the proposed Irish real-world use is, by accident or design, misleading.

Still, even with clean test data, the “cloudwalk_mt_007″ algorithm fails on border kiosk images, which are the closest to real-world application of FRT. The algorithm also shows discrepancies by ethnicity. West African women are by far the most affected, meaning its use could have a catastrophic impact in misidentification of black women.

For relevant studies of FRT’s performance, audits of deployed FRT in contexts similar to Ireland should be considered. Audits from Cambridge researchers have found that deployments of FRT in England and Wales failed to meet all minimum legal and ethical standards and requirements.

Some excellent COVID-19-related research coming out of TCD Neuroscience:

Now, the findings reported by the Trinity team in the top international journal Nature Neuroscience showed that there was disruption to the integrity of the blood vessels in the brains of patients suffering from Long COVID and brain fog. This blood vessel “leakiness” was able to objectively distinguish those patients with brain fog and cognitive decline compared to patients suffering from Long-COVID but not with brain fog.

The team led by scientists at the Smurfit Institute of Genetics in Trinity’s School of Genetics and Microbiology and neurologists in the School of Medicine have also uncovered a novel form of MRI scan that shows how Long-COVID can affect the human brain’s delicate network of blood vessels.

“For the first time, we have been able to show that leaky blood vessels in the human brain, in tandem with a hyperactive immune system may be the key drivers of brain fog associated with Long COVID. This is critically important, as understanding the underlying cause of these conditions will allow us to develop targeted therapies for patients in the future,” said Prof. Matthew Campbell, Professor in Genetics and Head of Genetics at Trinity, and Principal Investigator at FutureNeuro.

Apparently, this is the first study to correlate blood-brain barrier disruption with "brain fog" symptoms of Long COVID, using an enhanced MRI procedure. This is a very significant step towards the discovery of biomarkers and therapies for neurological manifestations of Long COVID.

Great to see this kind of significant research from TCD!

“Users in the UK and US were very, very highly represented. Which was strange because with hashtags that are very geographically specific, you wouldn’t expect to see that kind of spread,” said Mr Doak.
“These three hashtags have been heavily boosted by users in the US and UK. Taken together, UK and US users accounted for more use of the hashtags than Ireland.”
Other countries that saw use of the phrases on a much smaller scale include India, Nigeria and Spain.

“Status quo bias is a little bit different, it’s quite fascinating actually. It sounds like a fancy piece of academic language to say that people don’t like change, and there’s a bit of truth in that, but it’s more subtle than that, he said.

“It’s like this — if you say to somebody ‘We’re going to change the way your town is laid out, we’re going to make it more friendly for pedestrians and cyclists,’ let’s say and you say there’s a plan to do it. A lot of people instinctually resist that. Actually, these sorts of policies are typically fairly popular but there’s a substantial minority who will really quite resist it,” he said.

Lunn said: “If instead of telling them that it is a plan you say ‘oh, there is this town that has this layout, do you like it or not?’, you get completely different responses. It is as if when something is a plan for change we instinctually, psychologically react to it more negatively.”

He said that if somebody else is proposing a plan some people will look for the negatives while they are less likely to do so if they are being asked a question in a more open way.

wow, I didn't realise we had statutory right to redress for faulty goods for 6 years:

Statutory rights are provided for by legislation (Irish law and EU law as transposed in Ireland). These act as a kind of “legal guarantee”, entitling consumers to seek redress where an item is faulty. Consumers may rely on their statutory rights regardless of whether an item has a warranty or not.

Under Irish law, consumers have up to six years to seek redress for faulty or defective items (both new and second-hand).

If the product is defective, the seller is generally responsible for providing redress.

If a fault arises within six months of purchase, it is presumed to have existed at the time of purchase. For this reason, the consumer should not have to provide proof of the defect.

If the fault arises more than six months after purchase, the seller may request that the consumer prove the fault did not arise as a result of misuse – for instance, by obtaining a report from an independent expert.

Where an item is faulty, the seller may first offer a repair or replacement item. If this is not possible or fails to correct the problem, a refund may then be provided. Remedies for faulty goods must be provided free of charge.

When the first World War broke out in 1914, Furphy water carts were used to bring water to Australian troops in Australia, Europe and the Middle East.. Soldiers would gather round the Furphy to get a drink and to have a chat, telling jokes and tall stories. That gave rise to the use of the word Furphy as a rumour or a false report which continues to the present day.

The two companies, Furphy Foundry and J Furphy and Sons remain after five generations in family ownership and continue to produce many products including watercarts, all of which proudly bear the name “Furphy” in prominent lettering.

Reducing power sector CO2 emissions in Ireland from around 9 million tonnes today to a target of less than 2 million tonnes of CO2 per year is very achievable by 2030, using the approach currently underway to achieve the ‘70 by 30’ target, and implementing more of existing and proven technologies;

The current Programme for Government renewable capacity targets of 8.2 GW of onshore wind and 5 GW of offshore wind by 2030 should be maintained, with an additional target of 5 GW of solar PV.

This target can be achieved at a lower cost to the end consumer in Ireland, compared to delivery of the less ambitious ‘70 by 30’ target.

A zero-carbon power system is possible by 2030 and represents an achievable target in the 2030s.

Excellent demonstration via Robbie Semple on Twitter:

"Ireland’s biggest fossil fuel company is @dccplc. They are a FTSE100 company. Last year they made £13.4 billion in revenue and £530.2 million in profit. 71% of the profit came from their fossil fuel businesses.

‘In the face of a global crisis, Ireland’s biggest fossil fuel company refuses to stop selling fossil fuels ’: Why is this not more of a story?

DCC are very good at communications. Given how they make their money, most publicity is bad for business, so they keep a low profile. And what they do communicate is very skilful. [...]

"We have adopted a Net Zero 2050 target for our group Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Our interim target is a 20% reduction by 2025."

This is a masterclass in how to tell the world you won’t stop selling fossil fuels without telling the world you won’t stop selling fossil fuels. The key is referring only to scope 1 and 2 emissions, meaning the emissions produced in running their business. For DCC, that will include things like electricity for their factories, and fuel for their trucks. But they don’t mention scope 3 emissions, which would include emissions produced in their supply chain, or by their customers.

For DCC, that means they don’t have to worry about the methane that escapes when it's fracked out of the earth, or the carbon emitted as their oil and gas they sell is burned by end users. DCC’s 2021 sustainability report refers to scope 3 emissions, but doesn’t quantify them and has set no targets for reducing them.

So with their current banner commitments, they could double the amount of fossil fuels they sell and still meet their 2050 targets."

Scope 1/2/3 emissions are a hard concept to get your head around, but very important in dissecting greenwashing PR.

[...] a method of cookery practiced by the rural poor in the early to mid 19th century Ireland [...] Parboiling or half-roasting rendered a potato that was at once half-cooked and half-raw, with the inner core hard to the bite. Potatoes cooked in this way were called potatoes with the moon (an ghealach) or potatoes with the bone.

William Wilde, father of Oscar, describes the practice in some detail in his essay, ‘The Food of the Irish’, which was published in 1854 in the Dublin University Magazine. Here is his explanation of the practice: "the heart of the potato was allowed, by checking the boiling at a particular point, to remain parboiled, hard and waxy; when the rest of the potato has been masticated in the usual manner, this hard lump, about the size of a walnut, was bolted; and in this manner nearly a stone of the root was taken into the stomach of the Irish labourer per diem… it was grounded on a certain knowledge of physiology.

"The stomach digested the well boiled farinaceous portion of the potato within the space of a few hours, and that having all been disposed of, the half-boiled lumps remained behind, and a second digestion was commenced to assimilate this portion of food, and convert it into nutritious, life-sustaining material; which latter process lasted some hours longer, and thus the craving of hunger were warded off for five or six hours after the original meal."

As this Reddit post notes, however, it seems extremely likely that this "protest" is an astroturfed PR campaign. Sadly the Irish news media were happy to report it straight and gloss over the astroturfing.

'Nothing I've said here will really be a surprise to anyone, and it's not exactly the Reichstag Fire, but I hope it's a useful example of just how poorly Irish media serves the audience, and how easily astroturfing is done here. This protest couldn't muster the hundred or so "real" people they expected to show up, as the padding they'd have needed to look convincing, but others can - and do.

Something worth remembering for how our national media covers major, minor, totally or partly fake protests in future, and how protests are organised in the first place. Not all their instigators are as mostly-harmless as Wedding Planners.'

This nails the issue with housing in Ireland:

The Government has been called on to do something to stop this. Even Fianna Fáil politicians have come out crying crocodile tears of outrage. But the truth is the investor purchase of housing in Ireland on a major scale is actually Government policy and has been for the last decade.

The Government does not actually want you to be able to buy or rent an affordable home. They have created an unaffordable housing system that is focused on delivering housing as an investment asset, not a home.[...]

This current crisis has been brewing for a long time. It goes back to the Celtic Tiger days of the late 1990s and early 2000s when the Fianna Fáil-PD Governments encouraged the shift from housing to be treated as a home, to people buying it up as an investment asset.

They told people to speculate in the property market and gave tax breaks for landlords to buy a second, or third, home to rent out. These became the ‘buy-to-let’ investors. The banks lent out massively which added fuel to the fire of rising housing prices, and the inevitable crash happened in 2008 and 2009.

As their response to the disaster they had created, Fianna Fáil turned to global ‘vulture’ funds to buy up the bad loans and failed housing projects. They set up the ‘bad bank’ NAMA, which went on, under the Fine Gael Government from 2011 to the current day, to sell off (at a discount) huge land banks and billions of euro worth of properties to vulture and real estate investment funds.

If you visit the west of Ireland or Achill, you can still see the traces of booleying today. Fascinating part of Irish rural history:

by the 1800s, it was mostly young people and teenage girls especially who had the job of looking after cows at these seasonal ‘boolies’.

This gave rise to a vibrant but now largely forgotten cultural scene in Ireland’s uplands. Oral history collected in the 1930s and 1940s in Connemara, Mayo, Donegal, and the Galtee Mountains makes clear that booleying facilitated the transmission of a lot of important cultural knowledge.

One man from Cloch Cheannaola in Donegal states that his mother had learned her songs from other dairymaids in the hills, while another account from Iorras Aintheach in Galway outlines how the girls not only sang but played musical instruments and danced as well. [....]

The small degree of independence which young women gained as participants in booleying was sometimes missed later on in life. There is an unmistakeable sense of loss in songs like Na Gamhna Geala and Aililiú na Gamhna, in which married women reminisce about their time looking after cows and calves in the hills.
