jerryking>bottlenecks<< and >>depletion<<. Most of the problems facing rich countries are temporary. Eventually, new drugs factories will come online and produce more vaccines; Texan refineries will reopen, easing the components shortage; and shipping containers will find their way back to the right ports. The problem is not how to produce enough per se, but producing enough to satisfy all demand right now...... A bigger concern is that the pandemic is a test run for how our societies will respond to a changing climate and a damaged environment. Depleting the world’s natural resources creates a scarcity that time will not alleviate: once a rainforest or endangered species is gone, it is gone for good.
.
This could include shortages of basic commodities we mostly never think about. The UN is warning that the world is running out of the sand that is vital for construction. Urbanization in Africa and Asia is depleting the reserves in quarries, coastlines and riverbeds faster than they can be placed; abundant desert sand, eroded by the wind, is too small and round to use in construction.......Only water is used more in the global economy than sand. Here, too, shortages have already made themselves felt .....Of all the lessons taught by the pandemic, perhaps the most important is how much we take for granted. There are plenty of other things we will miss if they disappear.

jerryking>gone against the grain<<........Within the mining, forestry and agricultural sectors, when we deal with personalities, we are deflecting from the source of the problems.
The problem, for example, in the mining industry has nothing to do with the acquisition, partnership, joint venture or sale of interests in the concessions granted years ago to any individual. The problems within the sector are better considered in terms of who are the primary beneficiaries of concessions and how concentrated are concessions in the hands of a few individuals...... Do you really believe that the present model of economic development that Guyana is pursuing will allow the ordinary citizen to become a millionaire overnight as a result of oil?
The problem is one of class and not of race. The problem is who benefits.[i.e. = "cui bono?"] There is one class that has always benefited, regardless of which government is in power. They held sway over the PNC and they are holding sway under the PPP.
In the meantime, the working class is fuming over fishing licences and all matter of trivialities. Instead of demanding that the resources of Guyana be used more for helping poor people than for the rich, the working class is allowing itself to be divided along racial lines. And while they are doing this, the propertied class is smiling all the way to the bank.

As he once observed: “The legacy of institutions, structures and behaviour patterns of the plantation system are so deeply entrenched that adjustment tends to take place as an adaptation within the bounds of the established framework.”..........few people know that Best was an economic advisor to the Cheddi Jagan administration in the 1950s, and that his New World Group had its genesis right here in what was still then British Guiana. The obdurate nature of the plantation economy is what we continue to be burdened with to this day.....As St. Lucian poet, Derek Walcott, in his own seminal plantation poem, ‘Ruins of a Great House’, observed, “The rot remains with us, the men are gone.”....The economic contours of the oil economy are virtually the same as the plantation economy......Norman Girvan, the late, great Jamaican economist, in his study of the bauxite industry fifty years ago, outlined those contours: foreign ownership; basic or primary stage of production; limited domestic inputs, or local content; the repatriation of profits, meaning most of the money leaving; and “the persistence of the incalculability of value flows with transfer pricing (JKC: the opaqueness of Guyana govt.'s Production-Sharing Agreement with ExxonMobil)”,....Guyana society today... in terms of its fundamental economic framework... is a plantation society redux........Fifty-four years after independence, the “commanding heights of our economy” (a phrase dear to Forbes Burnham) still remains under the command and control of external forces with the full complicity of our political ‘leadership’: the colonial overseers in their plantation great houses have simply been replaced by homegrown government ministers in their mansions, selling out our patrimony for a few pittance.....we remain transfixed in the plantation mindset and....mode of action.

jerryking>malaise<< about the direction the country is heading.
The first step involves spelling out for Canadians just how critical the oil sands are to the national economy. In 2011, Albertans contributed $19-billion more to federal coffers than Ottawa spent in their province. No other province comes close to making as large a contribution to the federation. Indeed, at least seven out of 10 provinces are net beneficiaries of federal spending. Without Alberta’s wealth, federal transfers to have-not provinces would need to shrink, compromising the quality of life and public services for millions of Canadians.
Those who argue that other, cleaner industries would fill the economic vacuum if we shut down the oil sands ignore the fact that countries do best by exploiting their comparative advantages. Ours lie in resources. Though our technology sector has occasionally produced global success stories, our collective expertise still lies mainly in large-scale resource development.
Canadians, however, also want to be seen as conscientious global citizens. Our Prime Minister (if not this one, the next) could build a consensus behind developing the oil sands if he were to make shrinking its environmental footprint a national priority. Such a project would be a boon to domestic innovation, producing economic and social returns for the whole country.]]>oil_sands oil_industry Alberta Konrad_Yakabuski R&D oil_patch economic_vacuum comparative_advantage natural_resources pride environmental_footprint large-scale resource_extraction malaisehttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:jerryking/b:bbfe1decec08/Canada’s real wealth lies in its institutional integrity, not its resources - The Globe and Mail2014-04-22T03:56:34+00:00

jerryking>underpricing<< it...Africa's significant growth potential has generated optimism, however, the geopolitical risks facing investors in Africa remain, for the most part, underestimated.”
The biggest threat to business in Africa, he argues, is “re1igious/ ideological militancy"--especially from Islamist/jihadist groups - which he says “has been vastly >>underestimated<<, and will pose significant risks to foreign investors in much of Africa."
He believes companies and their investors are underpricing the risks of doing business in Aŕrica, including rising security and insurance costs and cant project delays that could come from security threats, military conflicts or regime changes....Until the market starts pricing risk into African resource investments before a crisis forces the realization upon it, there will be little incentive for companies to seek less risky and less corrupt places to put their money.
And there will be more harsh and costly awakenìngs for investors who are themselves willfully blind to the risks. ]]>underpricing Africa natural_resources political_risk geopolitics Mali war underestimation frontier_markets corruption mining mispricing Islamists jihadis risks willful_blindness geopolitical-riskhttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:jerryking/b:5f66da96bcb3/Fence 'em in2013-01-28T13:55:03+00:00

jerryking>natural resources<<, China is forging deep economic, political and military ties with most of Africa's 54 countries. There's more at stake than just fuel for an economic juggernaut, however, say senior Chinese officials, executives and Western diplomats. In Africa, as in many other parts of the developing world, China is redrawing geopolitical alliances in ways that help propel China's rise as a global superpower. China is courting other countries to support its plan to reassert political authority over Taiwan and seeking a counterweight
against U.S. power in global bodies such as the United Nations. It's
also thinking long-term, cultivating desperately poor nations to serve
as markets for its products decades down the road.
