jerryking>longevity.<<
Here are a few exercises that experts recommend to increase your hand strength; they can be incorporated into your existing workout routine or done separately.......also recommended is the dead hang — the starting position of a >>pull-up<<. “It requires grip strength to control the body’s weight, and it’s good for the shoulders, upper back and core,” Mr. McCall said. Beginners should start with 10-second hangs and try to build up to one minute.
Add >>functional exercises<< to your current workout.
Experts say that exercises that strengthen your grip while engaging other muscles are the most effective, because they mimic the movements of daily life. For example, the >>farmer’s carry<<, where you tote a heavy object in each hand while walking, works the grip as well as the core, arms, shoulders and back.

jerryking>resilience<<.
Resilience is one of the most rare and valuable qualities. It’s the ability to withstand >>hardship<<, to maintain composure under duress, to bounce back from adversity and ask for more, please. What we’re talking about here is **mental toughness**, and if you ask me there is no better arena for developing this quality than the gym.
Deadlifts and squats; loaded carries and sled pushes; hill sprints and high-intensity interval training [i.e. = "doing hard things"] – these exercises are all staples of the best training programs not only because they build brawn, but because they reveal just how tough we really are. There’s a sense of >>empowerment<< that comes from knowing you can count on your body in nearly any situation. To borrow a phrase from punk rock renaissance man Henry Rollins, ""iron truly is the best antidepressant.""]]>exercise fitness mental_health self-care self-compassion strength_training behavioral_activation clinical_depression empowerment hardships motivations resilience self-love tough-mindedness hard_things Paul_Landinihttps://pinboard.in/https://pinboard.in/u:jerryking/b:9ea687f01467/Exercise and Aging: How to Build Strength - The New York Times2023-03-05T02:19:44+00:00

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/06/magazine/ironman-xc.html
jerryking>subcategory<< of Ironman that caters to >>high-achieving<<, >>time-strapped<< business executives......A typical Ironman race field has about 2,000 competitors, and the entry fee is between $475 and $675. The XC pool in such a race is 10 to 15, and the fee ranges between $5,700 and $15,000. In addition to being a C-level executive, applicants are generally referred for consideration and sit for an interview, though it’s less onerous than it sounds, more of a jerk filter than an admissions process......He describes the program as “a coming together of people who are like-minded, navigating vastly different but very similar challenges” — like managing a group of car dealerships in Vermont, he adds, or running the security side of Microsoft.........Among the perks of XC is a choice room at the hotel closest to the starting line.....XC runs the way XCers like their businesses to run. For them, true luxury is everything in its right place, operating like clockwork.
What else do XCers get for their thousands? “White-glove level of service,”......make this experience as fun and frictionless as possible.............Business leaders are drawn to Ironman for all kinds of competitive, self-actualizing reasons, but according to Dixon, this particular expression of psychopathy is the ultimate test of >>problem solving<<. That problem could be mechanical, like a blown tire, or it could be physical, like mismanaging your hydration and needing to adjust your race plan, or it could be mental, like your brain’s instructing you to lie down and die. Part of finishing the race is a mind-set that comes naturally to gifted executives: Every problem has a solution. XCers, though, tend to be “on the outlier fringe,” Dixon says. What distinguishes them is their ability to maintain this mind-set under extreme duress. Ironman XC is like catastrophe practice. “By going on that journey,” he says, “you are going to draw a whole bunch of lessons about overcoming challenges, adversity, etc., and you don’t have to be that smart to join the dots to the same lessons that come in life.”.........Over the same period, effective leadership has undergone a rethink similar to Ironman itself, a shift from the original metaphor — unbending, unstoppable, indestructible — to a kind of radical mind-body balance, the seemingly paradoxical notion that the right kind of not working holds the key to improving your work. Take sleep, which used to be for the soft and weak, a thing lazy people did while the masters of the universe were busy crushing it around the clock. “A lack of sleep used to be a badge of toughness amongst high-performing people,” Dixon says. “Now it’s a badge of stupidity. Every single high-performing C.E.O. that I work with prioritizes sleep. Every single one. I don’t work with a C.E.O. who doesn’t sleep at least seven hours every night.”.....Almost by force of gravity, XC has come to replicate the social and structural dynamics of the corporate world: white and male, plus one or two women who’ve been the one or two women in a roomful of men their whole lives.....Shortly after Team Canada signed up for Mont-Tremblant, Hansen, in his capacity as chief executive of Hansen Signs, found himself in the box. His company had underestimated the budget for a two-year, $600,000 project to such a degree that merely breaking even on it would be next to impossible. He gathered his team and told them: “We made a mistake here, and we’re going to have to fix it, and the way that we’re going to fix it is by finding opportunities in every step of the process.” This problem would not be solved in a day, or two days, or two months. This problem was Ironman-size, and so they would all have to be Ironmen to solve it, and so that’s what they did. They finished the project.[i.e. = "BHAGs"] Hansen’s family business survived an existential crisis.
Once you’ve pushed your body and mind to race all those miles in a single day, the crises of normal life become speed bumps.......

There are two kinds of fatigue, according to Mr. Stulberg. One is when your mind and body are truly tired. The other is when that system tricks you into feeling tired because you are in a rut. When you’re tired, you need rest. But if you’re in a rut, you need to nudge yourself into action.
Talking to Mr. Stulberg helped me realize that my exhaustion had changed from those frantic days last March. Now, instead of fixing it, I was feeding it.
“You don’t need to >>feel good<< to get going,” he said. “You need to get going to give yourself a chance to feel good.”
That’s why so many of us feel like we hit a pandemic wall — the fatigue we faced last spring, the natural reaction to shock and terror, has been replaced by inertia, Mr. Stulberg told me.
Waiting to feel better won’t work anymore. We have to act......the price of fitness is sneakers. Wellness may be hard, but much of it is free......So last month I finally started running again. At first all I did was sprint for 30 seconds. I ran on the same path in Central Park, where a year ago I would log 20-mile workouts that now feel like dreams. I can’t hit those speeds right now for even a minute.
But I keep trying. And if I’m tired, I back off. But not for long.....we can take steps to reconnect with the lives that sustained us before — whatever that was. Our health, our families, our friends......I discovered that maybe one way to deal with pandemic burnout isn’t going easier anymore — it’s trying something hard.

jerryking>natural ability<< you've got, you're on the way, Butcher added. That's been taken away for us and it's a huge void that somehow you've to fill. That finishing isn't there.
Butcher had no doubts that the likes of Vivian Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner and others benefited tremendously from the experience of the county circuit. County cricket was the finishing school for the great West Indian cricketers, he said. These were cricketers with ability and a lot of talent, but really in England, it was when they became top-class cricketers.
Follows West Indies game
But he still follows West Indies cricket closely... About 15 to 20 years ago, West Indies were a great side. It wasn't just luck. They had a style of play and a desire to play cricket that is missing now. I feel I can help in that area.
Based on what he has seen, he is convinced that the discipline is missing from the current West Indies team.
If you see the way they bat and bowl, there is a lack of discipline in their play, he said. The bowlers, in particular, are easily bored. They bowl two balls in one place and they feel they have to bowl the third ball somewhere else because they didn't get a wicket. The players, he said, must understand what was required to succeed in international cricket. If you want to be at this level, you've got to be **disciplined in your lifestyle**, you've got to be disciplined in your batting and bowling. You've got to operate as a team. It's not an individual game [i.e. = reliably "play your position" as part of a team]. No team can function on just individuals. High fitness levels, a strong work ethic and the mental side of the game are also crucial. There is a lot of psychology in the game these days.......Everybody is trying to get an edge. Most of the teams are pretty much the same in ability levels. It's the mindset that makes the difference. It's the only difference at the top. Even so, Butcher feels it would take some time before West Indies can once more become world champions. The top sides are **not standing still** [i.e. = "no stasis"] . Even now, the Australians are looking for ways to make themselves better, he said. We've got to go back to basics. Players have got to become more technical. They will have their natural ability, but they can't just rely on good eyes and reflexes.
Butcher also pointed to a lack of experience and a lack of planning for the recent decline in West Indies' cricket.
When we had a procession of great players in West Indies, there was belief that this would continue because West Indian cricketers are natural cricketers and it would just keep happening, he said.
The modern-day game has changed completely and there hasn't been a lot of planning in terms of academies, indoor facilities and so on (i.e. = "systematic approaches")

Unfortunately..... The response from incredulous patients, he says, is “You want me to do the things that hurt my knee, then >>work harder<< to do more?!”..........The takeaway....is that people who have been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis shouldn’t be put off by initial discomfort when they start an unfamiliar exercise program. He suggests they keep pain to five or below out of 10, and modify the workout if it goes higher. Over time, the workout-related pain shouldn’t worsen, and may even decrease.
