It is thought to date to the 11th century, within a few years of the battle. Now widely accepted to have been made in England, perhaps as a gift for William, it tells the story from the point of view of the conquering Normans and for centuries has been preserved in Normandy." https://theconversation.com/the-bayeux-tapestry-tells-only-the-winners-story-but-the-other-side-can-be-found-in-old-english-texts-283339

Two guys in papier-mâché masks from Saguenay, Quebec, have been playing music together for 20 years since they were 13 years old. For most of that time, they existed in relative obscurity. Then, KEXP posted a video of them playing four songs and the internet lost its mind... Western music uses twelve notes per octave. You can find all of them on a piano — seven white keys and five black. The distance between any two adjacent keys is a half step. Microtonal music uses the notes between those notes. A quarter tone sits exactly halfway between two adjacent piano keys — a pitch that, on a standard instrument, doesn't exist. Most rock and pop you've ever heard lives on whole steps and half steps. AdP lives on the steps in between."

The evolutionary biologist’s latest comment, the board said, “implies that the identities of transgender individuals are fraudulent, while also simultaneously attacking Black identity as one that can be assumed when convenient”, while his “subsequent attempts at clarification are inadequate and convey neither sensitivity nor sincerity”."

Then we argue why, rather than just be eroded into acquiescence by an overwhelming tsunami of AI, rather than being bowled over and washed out to sea, you should never give these systems and their booster the benefit of the doubt. Never accept that these forces of production are inevitable, undeniable, and actually already existing. You should first always say, “Prove it.”" [a.i. consciousness would solve OpenAI + co's problem of LLMs being endlessly derivative] https://archive.ph/o8oOu#selection-827.6-827.98 [a.i. hype meant to wear us down] "one of AI’s enduring cultural impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing their mind. New, supposed breakthroughs are touted but then immediately couched with the reminder that this is the worst the technology will ever be. The most common feeling about AI is somatic: a low-grade hum of difficult-to-place anxiety that’s the result of loud people constantly suggesting that the near future will look very little like the present and that nothing—your job or the social contract—might survive the transition... ilicon Valley’s leaders pay lip service to a societal conversation about what comes next, but their actions say something else: Keep up or be left behind. Humanity rewriting the social contract together sounds nice; less so when you have a gun to your head. Time is of the essence, we’re told. Maybe that’s true. But how can we build a future if we can’t agree on the present? A cynic might conclude that our input isn’t desired at all."

2026/6: https://www.thenerdreich.com/ai-argentina-and-the-antichrist-thiels-vision-blooms [Argentinian pres Milei:] "“The logic of 1602 still applies today. Companies run by new technologies such as A.I. agents require the same legal framework that has underpinned capitalism for over four centuries, one suitable for development and experimentation.” Milei plans to turn Argentina into a top destination for the Network State cult. His plan to create a new framework by which tech moguls (and their machines) can escape regulation, laws + taxes is an almost-perfect expression of the Network State idea promoted by Thiel protégé Balaji Srinivasan, who calls for Silicon Valley to secede from the U.S. Thiel has been traveling the globe, preaching about the Antichrist. Thiel has a name for critics and opponents of AI: “legionnaires of the Antichrist.” (Milei, a believer in “interspecies communication,” is well-known for hiring a spirit medium to communicate w/ his dead dog, Conan. The dog’s spirit reportedly told Milei that God would make him president of Argentina. No word on whether Conan has weighed in on his AI legislation.)"

Earlier this month, police raided X’s offices in France as part of the government’s investigation into CSAM on the platform... Since AI-generated face-swapping algorithms became accessible at the consumer level in late 2017, the technology has only gotten better, more realistic, and its effects on targets harder to combat. It was always used for this purpose: to shame and humiliate [+ silence and intimidate] women online."

The ‘creep’ framing is provocative, and it points to something real. But I worry that it shrinks the problem to one creep on a train taking a picture, when the structural danger is always-on cameras becoming ordinary, human workers reviewing footage, and data pooling in an ecosystem owned by one company. Once that hardware sits on millions of faces, it becomes infrastructure that police, immigration agencies, employers, and the company itself can draw on.

https://concentratemedia.com/actors-and-puppets-depict-the-end-of-the-world-in-belgian-performance-coming-to-ann-arbor/ "The inspiration for “Dimanche,” an indefinable performance that blends puppetry, mime, video, and multiple kinds of theater, began with a panel from Bill Watterson’s “Calvin and Hobbes” comic strip, according to Sandrine Heyraud-Danailov, one of the show’s creators. “It’s not denial,” Calvin says in the panel. “I’m just very selective about the reality I accept.” At that point, their concern was that the finished show would be “too moralistic,” Heyraud-Danailov says. They wanted to avoid a sanctimonious or didactic tone. Instead, Heyraud-Danailov says the artists approached their topic with humor, “even if it is a tragedy,” since comedy can provide an “emotional distance” from even the most difficult topics. The end result is a blend of puppetry, object theater, and physical theater. Heyraud-Danailov says she and her collaborators tend to avoid the word “mime,” which so many people associate with an old-fashioned, archaic form of art; they prefer “physical theater” or “gestural theater.” Both Heyraud-Danailov and Durieux attended l’École Internationale de Mimodrame de Marcel Marceau in Paris, the school started by iconic mime Marcel Marceau. There, they learned different “movement styles” before ultimately developing their own physical “language,” Heyraud-Danailov says. Mueck created animal puppets for the performance. Heyraud-Danailov says that while the realistic appearance of the puppets was certainly important, the specificity of their movements was absolutely crucial. She says she, Durieux, and Tenret wanted Mueck to find “the rhythm of [each] animal.”"

For a year and a half, we have been looking at videos on our phones of infants left to die in hospitals bombed by Israel, of parents crying over the bodies of their children, of starving orphans covering their siblings with rags to keep them warm. Our government continues to give Israel billions in military aid with which to carry out these atrocities. Once you start dropping bombs on these people - to say nothing of the violence that necessarily follows a boots-on-the-ground occupation - you’re going to start driving them into the waiting arms of factions that oppose you. Especially because the current administration has shown a less-than-comforting attitude towards civilian casualties, war crimes, and genocide.Let’s also not lose sight of the role that US and British intervention played in creating the circumstances for the Ayatollahs to come to power in the first place." Given that this structural feature is a far more durable element of politics than the wavering and contradictory statements of the Trump administration, it is a good place to start. And where does it lead? It leads to personal politics or rather personal gain. Given the stupefyingly overt corruption of the Trump administration, one must ask whether the United States armed forces are now being used on a per-hire basis... None of this is a defense of the murderous regime in Teheran. The Iranian government has been engaged in the mass murder of peaceful protestors. The scale of that slaughter has not really sunk in. One can certainly imagine ways of addressing Iranian authoritarianism and corruption. We could combine a patient campaign of pressure and sanctions with support for the opposition and proposals to help address growing ecological problems such as the horrifying lack of water that stands behind much of political opposition in the country. Unfortunately, nothing like this is on offer, or could be on offer, from the Trump administration. All that it has to offer is its own authoritarianism and corruption." https://snyder.substack.com/p/fascist-failure "To complete the fascist transition, Trump has to give the country a war it does not want, and win it, and transform the society. T does not know how to fight a war. And he flounders." https://theintercept.com/2026/02/28/us-attack-iran-iraq-war/ "The case for invading Iraq was based on lies. The continued denial of this designation is a threat to the very foundations of the moral order on which we all depend. while other crimes entail indiscriminate or deliberate killing of civilians as individuals, genocide denotes the killing of people as members of a group, geared at irreparably destroying the group itself so that it would never be able to reconstitute itself as a political, social or cultural entity. The daily scenes of horror in Gaza, from which the Israeli public is shielded by its own media’s self-censorship, expose the lies of Israeli propaganda that this is a war of defense against a Nazi-like enemy. The horror of what has been happening in Gaza is still described by most observers as war. But this is a misnomer. For the last year, the IDF has not been fighting an organized military body. Today the IDF is primarily engaged in an operation of demolition and ethnic cleansing. One shudders when Israeli spokespeople shamelessly utter the hollow slogan of the IDF being the “most moral army in the world.” I am deeply worried that Israel will persist on its disastrous course, remaking itself, perhaps irreversibly, into a full-blown authoritarian apartheid state. Such states, as history has taught us, do not last." -Omer Bartov

Her sound blurs lines — house, funk, hip-hop, Motown and more... She points to Dimitri, who packaged genre distinctions — house for Chicago, techno for Detroit — into slick triple vinyl packs that helped define global perceptions. But for Hale, labels don’t mean much. “When it really gets down to it, who cares,” she says with a shrug. She feels the same way about labels around her identity. “What are you gonna say? ‘She’s a lesbian’? Everybody knows. I don’t need the title… it don’t change nothing,” she says. “I’m always into the people, because we are the people.”"

In the final year of World War I, the French government turned to Parisian schoolgirls to create propaganda for the general population. The National Committee for Foresight and Thrift announced a student competition in Paris wherein the strongest designs on the theme of voluntary rationing would be printed and distributed throughout France. While hundreds of images were submitted, only sixteen posters were printed—all drawn by young women between the ages of 13 and 16. At a time when girls were seen as no more than “future housewives” and would not receive the vote in France until 1945, the amplification of female voices was a radical gesture. Our speaker, Angelina Lippert, is Chief Curator of Poster House in New York. Thirty tickets are available for $10 each. Purchase a ticket early and often » Tuesday, April 16 at 7p; Doors open at 6p for mingling."

"The US has been divesting from social infrastructure for several decades now—especially from the public education system, which was hardly set up according to altruistic intentions in the first place. The era when getting a good education guaranteed social advancement is long past, and even those who benefit most from the current educational system have an increasingly cynical attitude about it. In short, the same students who will not get the help they need at home are increasingly not getting it at school, either."

2023/1: https://sentientsyllabus.substack.com/p/how-much-is-too-much "Assessing quality is hard – & generally does not scale. However, a commitment to scale education for society is a cornerstone of the post-industrial university; the commodification of assessment plays a central role, in teaching, as well as in certifying the outcomes as a basis for career-forming qualifications... If we nurture the sensibility of each student about the value that self improvement has to them, learning becomes an expression of the self, and not merely POSITIONING ONESELF IN AN ESCALATING COMPETITION... What we need to do is to assess in a way that correlates with the joy of learning & the quality of achievement, & do this in an alliance with our students."

2023/10: “Schools serve the same social functions as prisons and mental institutions- to define, classify, control, and regulate people.” ― Michel Foucault https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/10/23/upshot/sat-inequality.html "It’s unconscionable to keep using the SAT. New data show in stunning detail that it does little more than measure family wealth." "“Kids in disadvantaged neighborhoods end up behind the starting line even when they get to kindergarten,” said Sean Reardon, the professor of poverty and inequality in education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. “On average, our schools aren’t very good at undoing that damage.” ... The differences among schools are less important than what happens outside of school, a variety of research suggests — what children do in the evenings and on summer breaks, their parents’ vocabularies, and the level of stress in their home lives."

2023/5: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/05/11/opinion/pandemic-learning-losses-steep-but-not-permanent.html [READER COMMENT] If you want to help these kids, stop thinking of them like learning machines whose experience can be quantified through more of these endless standardized tests. Stop whining about lost learning opportunities and recognize that the worst losses during the pandemic were psychological and emotional. Get these kids into sports teams, marching bands, summer camps that are NOT about STEM. Give them free time on vacation, now that there’s something to do besides sit at home. Give them a chance to practice growing up. Another: "Ban cell phones. Hire more counselors, social workers and teachers. Let teachers teach, reduce class sizes, increase classes in creative writing, library time and reading, art and free play, and watch the magic happen.""

2023/5: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/03/us/us-history-test-scores.html#commentsContainer "As expat who has observed life in Norway I'd say, get rid of the standardized tests, create a fair educational system that grants all schools equal access to the same quality of education, significantly raise the salary level of teachers across the board, reduce class sizes, and audit the military industrial complex so we can change priorities and begin investing in our people as our greatest asset like Scandinavian countries do. The educational impoverishment of our students has steadily increased over these decades. (Thus my alarm at the penchant for pinning this, even if partially, on the pandemic.) neglecting the humanities and the social sciences to emphasize math and science has contributed to this turn. So has the penchant for testing, which brought about teaching to the test rather than for opening up spaces in which students could become invested in knowledge production, not for a grade, but for its own sake. Vacuous credentialism in the outside world that places a premium on the diploma or the degree itself rather than on the development of analytical skills and the sheer pleasure of knowing, being familiar with humankind’s vast storehouse of accumulated experience. The reliance on technology that has eroded attention spans and diminished our students’ reading ability. Starving educational systems through the unequal allocation of public resources. I could go on. But what is to be stressed is that this isn’t pandemic-driven, but a longstanding problem that has greatly contributed to the sense of unease and loss that now permeates the US."

2025/3: https://snyder.substack.com/p/the-doge-helpline "Rep. 4 "Of course we lie. Lying is good. Let science and the humanities compete with other opinions in a free market of ideas. The dark enlightenment will be better than that last enlightenment. Without the knowledge. And the humanism. We'll tell you who you need to be and what you need to know.""

In other words, our very lives are a testament to the freedom that we seek." Leanne Simpson: "It is unacceptable and unsurprising to see colonial power line up behind Israel and this genocide." In Latin America, the repressive tactic of “disappearing” enemies of the state came into widespread use in the early 1960s, as Washington mobilized its allies to ensure the containment of the Cuban Revolution. The tactic itself emulated Adolf Hitler’s famous 1941 Nacht und Nebel, or Night and Fog, decree, which directed security forces operating in occupied territories, mainly France, to capture dissidents and hold them incommunicado. Most were executed. The Nazis coined a neologism for these victims, vernebelt, which loosely translates as transformed into mist. Latin Americans called their missing los desaparecidos, the disappeared. It was an especially cruel method of repression." https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/05/world/middleeast/gaza-60-days.html "In a tiny strip of land where more than two million people are trapped, death can feel imminent. A. “Mushotoku Mind: The Heart of the Heart Sutra,” by Taisen Deshimaru (revised and re-edited by Richard Collins). In my blurb for the book, I wrote: “Through his elegant, rich explanation of mushotoku mind, Master Taisen Deshimaru gives us one of the most beautiful and profound commentaries on the Heart Sutra that I have had the pleasure of reading: a gift of the Way that may save the West from itself. I didn’t want it to end, because everything is here — the nature of reality, how we should live — in a deep, dharma transmission that brings peace, insight and happiness on each and every page.”

https://taisendeshimaru.org/books/mushotoku-mind "his book presents his brilliant commentary on the most renowned of Buddhist texts, the Heart Sutra, known in Japanese as Hannya Shingyo-a philosophical investigation on the futility of philosophical investigation. Deshimaru's work fills a great gap in the interpretations of this seminal text in that he emphasizes "mind-emptiness” (ku) as the foundation of Zen practice, in contrast to the usual "mindfulness” focus of other Zen approaches. This "emptiness” and "purpose of no purpose” is one of the most difficult ideas for Westerners to understand. Yet we know that our most cherished values are based on mushotoku mind when it comes to love. We value the unselfish love of family or country that is based not on what we can get from the relationship but on what we can give. We know, too, that these virtues are not accomplished directly through our will but indirectly through dropping our expectations." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUz-KkuEkQ0

"The scene was an earsplitting reminder of the fury that has dogged his government since it enacted a highly unpopular pension overhaul this spring that raised the legal age of retirement to 64 from 62... The pension law was pushed through using a constitutional provision that avoided a full parliamentary vote. Mr. Macron defended the move in a televised interview on Monday as an act of responsibility, noting that key government decisions in the past, such as building France’s nuclear-weapons force, had used the same mechanism. The casserolades began a month ago during a televised speech by Mr. Macron that was intended as a way to move on from the pension upheaval. Determined to keep up the fight, protesters gathered outside City Halls across France to bang pots and pans. In Paris, many residents joined in from their apartment windows, filling entire neighborhoods with metallic notes... https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/charivari Pan beating dates back to the Middle Ages in a custom, called “charivari,” that was intended to shame ill-matched couples. The tradition then took a political turn in the 1830s, under King Louis Philippe I, with people banging pots and pans at night under the windows of judges’ and politicians’ homes to demand greater freedoms."
https://crimethinc.com/2023/03/30/france-in-flames-macron-attempts-to-crush-the-movement-against-the-pension-reform-with-lethal-violence-1 "Once again, three groups formed, but when they reached the edges of the basin, police quickly forced them to converge into one procession, mixing them all together. The police attacked first with tear gas and shrapnel grenades, to which the front line replied with fireworks and stones. Under police fire, with over 5000 grenades falling from the sky—some of them tear gas grenades, some of them the extremely dangerous GM2L grenades—any distinction between the black bloc, the union leaders, politicians, and the rest of the people in the march evaporated. More than two hundred people were injured, many of them severely." "What’s hidden behind all of this? A lake, water that belongs to everyone pumped and stored for the few. Shit, what the hell are we doing here again? Yes, yes, we have numbers, we’re the mass. it’s all we have against the military-grade weapons that are raining down on us, that cut our legs off, that tear our limbs apart." "Some unions—including the CGT and Solidaires—also spoke out against police brutality, expressing solidarity with those who suffered in Sainte-Soline. The slogan “Ni oubli, ni pardon” (“don’t forget, don’t forgive”) is slowly proliferating among striking workers. Even international media covering the movement and condemning Macron’s autocratic and repressive strategy has begun focusing on police violence rather than the pension reform... If Macron is determined to force his agenda through without a vote regardless of how unpopular it is, and to suppress all protest by means of militarized police violence, then the only way to prevent the arrival of outright autocracy is to establish a rapport de force with the police. In that case, those who take the initiative to experiment with ways to defend themselves from police are neither infantile nor irresponsible. On the contrary, they are the only thing standing between us and tyranny."

2023/6: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/28/world/europe/france-police-shooting-paris-nanterre.html "The shooting inflamed long-simmering anger in suburbs where relations between the police and residents are often freighted with mistrust."

Spain and the Dutch Republic, too, sided with the Americans, hoping they could carve their way out from under King George, thus weakening Great Britain and enabling the European nations to take more global territory.

"The document was a testament to the negotiating skills of the U.S. team. They got independence, of course, as well as a promise “to forget all past Misunderstandings and Differences that have unhappily interrupted the good Correspondence and Friendship which they mutually wish to restore.” All prisoners of war would be repatriated, no reparations would be demanded, and state legislatures were urged to provide restitution for the confiscated lands of British subjects (a provision that the U.S. government had no power to enforce)."

"Biden made bold promises to honor America’s commitment at the Paris climate summit in 2015 to keep global temperatures from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels: the threshold beyond which wildfires, floods, biodiversity loss, rising seas and human dislocation become significantly more devastating — and just a few tenths of a degree hotter than the world is today. Reaching that 1.5 number or even staying below two degrees would require a radical transformation of the world’s energy systems, replacing fossil fuels... Mr. Manchin joins Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans in opposing these plans. None of them offer a plausible alternative.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/04/opinion/another-step-toward-climate-apocalypse.html K on SCOTUS: "Anyone who believes that the recent series of blockbuster court rulings reflects any consistent legal theory is being willfully naïve: Clearly, the way this court interprets the law is almost entirely determined by what serves Republican interests."
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/01/opinion/environment/supreme-court-climate-change-west-virginia-epa.html "For the alarmed — and for the many more Americans who described themselves as “concerned” — the decision may confirm that THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. For the country’s highest court to consider the urgent challenge of warming and say, in effect, that we should be doing less rather than more comes as a profound psychological blow." -David Wallace-Wells

2022/7: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/18/opinion/climate-politics-manchin.html Manchin: "None of this would have mattered if Republicans weren’t unified in their opposition to any action to limit global warming. This opposition has only grown more entrenched as the evidence for looming catastrophe has grown... The fact is that one of America’s two major political parties appears to be viscerally opposed to any policy that seems to serve the public good. Overwhelming scientific consensus in favor of such policies doesn’t help — if anything, it hurts, because the modern G.O.P. is hostile to science and scientists."

2022/8: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/05/climate/republican-treasurers-climate-change.html "Nearly two dozen Republican state treasurers around the country are working to thwart climate action on state and federal levels, fighting regulations that would make clear the economic risks posed by a warming world, lobbying against climate-minded nominees to key federal posts and using the tax dollars they control to punish companies that want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Over the past year, treasurers in nearly half the United States have been coordinating tactics and talking points, meeting in private and cheering each other in public as part of a well-funded campaign to protect the fossil fuel companies that bolster their local economies. The Heritage Foundation, the Heartland Institute and the American Petroleum Institute are among the conservative groups with ties to the fossil fuel industry that have been working with the State Financial Officers Foundation and the treasurers to shape their national strategy."

2022/9: https://news.yahoo.com/3-things-everyone-should-know-about-the-inflation-reduction-act-193032441.html "There are three things everyone should know about the Inflation Reduction Act. First, we are lowering costs for working families. We are giving Medicare the power to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices. The law takes the most aggressive action ever in confronting the climate crisis and strengthening our energy security. Every single Republican voted against lower prescription drug prices, against lower health care costs and against a fairer tax system. Every single Republican voted against tackling the climate crisis, against lowering energy costs and against creating good-paying jobs. Democrats voted to cut the deficit to fight inflation by having the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share. Every single Republican opposed requiring big corporations to pay a minimum tax of 15%, instead of getting away with paying zero dollars in federal income taxes." https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/1559669129535176710 "The Inflation Reduction Act is now law. Giving Medicare the power to negotiate lower prescription drug prices. Ensuring wealthy corporations pay their fair share in taxes. And taking the biggest step forward on climate in our history." https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/16/us/politics/biden-climate-health-bill.html "I.R.A.: a landmark tax, health and energy bill that takes significant steps to modernize the American economy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels." https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/30/magazine/naomi-klein-doppelganger.html Naomi Klein: " the Biden administration had to be “dragged kicking and screaming into passing the Inflation Reduction Act — flawed as it is.” The I.R.A. is the biggest climate legislation in American history, garnering comparisons to the Green New Deal, but Klein maintained it isn’t enough: “We can’t afford to celebrate half measures in an emergency.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/17/climate/climate-protests-new-york.html "Biden: declare a climate emergency"

2023/10: https://www.noemamag.com/the-bold-idea-to-move-millions-to-climate-havens/ "While it is encouraging that the IRA and other industrial policies have pushed the private sector to announce new factories that produce such technology, the Biden administration’s renewable energy agenda has not addressed the economic viability of large swathes of the U.S. over the next several decades... the current approach to green industrial policy treats the regional distribution of the nation’s demographics and economic sectors as essentially static factors and overlooks how extreme weather and climate migration will likely destabilize important nodes of the energy transition."

"In “Poetics of Relation,” Glissant posits that the epic narrative tends toward a dangerous “filial legitimacy” when adhering to linear origin stories. That is, if a myth solidifies the thesis that we’ve originated from one source in time, then we might be led to defend that lineage at all costs by excluding others who don’t share or fit into its biological or philosophical genealogies. This might be one reason we are led to war with each other, because the myth legitimizes discreet geneses, which must be rallied around and protected. The national myth is then a means toward ontological fixedness, which is conducive to a hegemonic “us.” The theory sheds a different light on how we’ve tended to patriarchal myths like “Gilgamesh,” the “Iliad,” Adam and Eve, the “Founding Fathers,” etc. But it also offers alternative considerations on how stories are told in general — and which ones, as a species, we’ve allowed to prevail."

But few know the story of what happened two decades later, when French warships returned to a people who had paid for their freedom with blood, issuing an ultimatum: Pay again, in staggering amounts of cold hard cash, or prepare for war.

"[1915:] For decades to come, the United States was the dominant power in Haiti, dissolving parliament at gunpoint, killing thousands and shipping a big portion of Haiti’s earnings to bankers in New York while the farmers who helped generate the profits often lived near starvation."

And will Haitians ever truly have the chance to resolve that question for themselves, or will outsiders once again play the decisive role in the country’s future?"

She quotes Daniel R. Wildcat, a Yuchi member of the Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma: “Indigenous thinkers not only acknowledge contingency and humans’ lack of control in the world; they also see it as empowering and humbling, not something frightening.” Empowering and humbling may sound like a paradox, she writes, but only “because of how we normally conceive of power” as a hierarchy rather than mutually constituted." ... https://sfba.social/@lukespray/110787437442488493 "I grew up on a false plateau I took for infinity. And until I learned otherwise, all I could perceive was the loss of what was familiar and comforting to me. Now I endeavor to release my grip. To look into the future is to look around; to look around is to look into history---at not the apocalypse coming but the apocalypse past, the apocalypse still unfolding. Observing that the Greek word apokalypsis meant "through the concealed," Washuta writes that "apocalypse has very little to do with the end of the world and everything to do with vision that sees the hidden, that dismantles the screen." Likewise, French feminist poet and philosopher Helene Cixous wrote that “we need to lose the world, to lose a world, and to discover that there is more than one world and that the world isn’t what we think it is.” The current meaning of apocalypse is modern; in Middle English it simply meant "vision," "insight," or even "hallucination." The world is ending---but which world?" Consider that many worlds have ended, just as many worlds have been born and are about to be born. Consider that there is nothing a priori about any of them. Just as a thought experiment, imagine that you were born not at the end of time, but at the /exact right time/, that you might grow up to be, as the poet Chen Chen writes, "a season from the planet/ of planet-sized storms." Hallucinate a scenario, hallucinate yourself in it. Then tell me what you see. (187)"

2024/2: https://mas.to/@Jyoti/111975946088490259 "they call them 'developing countries' because 'countries struggling to recover from being ruthlessly pillaged and systematically destabilized' doesn't have the same ring."

2024/3: Intercept Ryan Grim: "You’ve been intervening in Haitian affairs consistently for more than a century. How are you so sure that you’re not the problem? I went deeper on the question on the podcast this week, speaking to journalist and researcher Jake Johnston, author of the new book “Aid State: Elite Panic, Disaster Capitalism, and the Battle to Control Haiti.” https://theintercept.com/2024/03/15/deconstructed-new-haitian-revolution/

2024/9: https://theintercept.com/2024/09/11/kamala-harris-debate-immigration/ "The racist myth sits within a legacy of vile slander faced by Haitians in the West, ever since Haitians liberated themselves from the yoke of French colonialism in the world’s most renown successful revolt by enslaved people. Trump and his followers need not know the specific history of racist backlash to play into its violent afterlives."

2025/6: https://prismreports.org/2025/06/25/black-immigrants-migrants/ "The popular myth that the U.S. is a “nation of immigrants” erases Native genocide in favor of oversimplification. In addition to the conquest of Native lands, there were enslaved Africans who were forced to come to the so-called New World. Upon arrival, it’s important to remember that these Black people did not stay in one place for generations. Oftentimes, they didn’t even have the choice. Despite growing Black nativist miseducation that over-represents U.S. Blackness, this country represents a tiny minority (less than 10%) of where most enslaved Africans were transported to. The vast majority were shipped as human cargo to the Caribbean and Latin America. Labeled “Negroes” and “Blacks” throughout the Americas, our respective slave-descended populations have had varying and changing relationships with these labels, nationality, and placement over time. Also, no one has the exclusive right to them because the terms moved just like Black people had to, by force or by choice... Fighting for a Black version or any alternative version of what European conquest has arranged the world through is a futile venture that’s carried on long enough. An actual liberatory project will have to think collectively and understand that what’s only designed to oppress us won’t ever truly abandon its core function."

2023/11: https://socialtextjournal.org/periscope_article/no-human-animals-on-black-solidarity-with-palestine-and-the-defense-of-life/ "As I wrote this past October with my colleagues Nisrin Elamin and Alissa Trotz, “Black people too have often been likened to animals and relegated to the realm of darkness and ‘the jungle.’” Black folks too, know genocide at the hands of the Europeans and their outposts in the Americas: we know mass kidnappings and enslavement, and we know the colonial atrocities of Belgium in the Congo and King Leopold’s slaughter of ten million Congolese people. In 1951, Black Americans petitioned the United Nations with a document called “We Charge Genocide: The Historic Petition to the United Nations for Relief from a Crime of The United States against the Negro People” (1951). They wrote: “To many an American the police are the government…We submit that the evidence suggests that the killing of Negroes has become police policy in the United States….”"

2025/7: https://xeno.glyphpress.com/@JoshuaACNewman/114893413333577018 "Gaza killings denounced as ‘disgrace to humanity’ by Belgian king" "So, how goes your process of returning the value (with interest, naturally) of every single drop of rubber and every single severed hand to the people of the Congo? By my estimate, the entire income of the Belgian royal family should be going to the Congo as a down payment on the entire GNP of Belgium."

2026/5: https://kolektiva.social/@franklinlopez/116500174233705683 "Haiti’s garment workers are making May Day mean what it’s supposed to mean: workers shutting shit down. Bosses pay them 685 gourdes a day while gas is 850 gourdes a gallon. Some workers spend almost their entire wage just getting to work. Now the women workers at SONAPI are walking out, pushing past managers trying to lock them inside, and demanding a real wage, lower fuel prices, and an end to the violence wrecking their communities. Solidarity with Batay Ouvriye and every worker in Haiti refusing to eat shit quietly. Batay l’ap kontinye. The struggle continues."

2026/7: https://beige.party/@Black_Flag/116857014914132374 "COLONIZATION: The fundamental strategy of colonization is actually quite simple: if you intend to destroy an individual or group, first destroy their dreams, their languages, and their habitat. From there, it’s a process of instilling in the colonized people a veneration for all that civilization has created and represents, and cultivating in their minds a psychology of dependence and submissiveness: just shape their thoughts in the brutal mould of civilization, until the majority of the colonized subjects can no longer think in terms of freedom any more than a bee can think in terms of poetry or mathematics."

In the 1950s and early 1960s, King Features Syndicate marketed a set of decalcomanias bearing full-color pictures of characters from its comic strips, including Flash Gordon, the Katzenjammer Kids, and Dagwood Bumstead. Intended for young children who might have difficulty pronouncing or reading the word "decalcomanias", these transfers were marketed as "Cockamamies", a deliberate mispronunciation. The term "cockamamy" or "cockamamie" has entered the English language with various slang meanings, usually denoting something that is wacky, strange or unusual. However, the expression "cockamamie" is attested by 1946 and reportedly as early as the 1920s."

The wonderland is not a place of refuge, not even necessarily an attractive or likable place. It can be — in fact, it usually is — a place of slaughter, exploitation, cruelty and fear. Captain Hook wants to kill Peter Pan. The witch in the Black Forest wants to cook Hansel and Gretel. The wolf actually eats Red Riding Hood’s grandmother. Albus Dumbledore is murdered, and the Lord of the Rings plans the enslavement of the whole of Middle-earth.

"We know, when we hear these tales, that even though they are “unreal,” because carpets do not fly and witches in gingerbread houses do not exist, they are also “real,” because they are about real things: love, hatred, fear, power, bravery, cowardice, death. They simply arrive at the real by a different route. They are so, even though we know that they are not so. The truth is not arrived at by purely mimetic means. An image can be captured by a camera or by a paintbrush. A painting of a starry night is no less truthful than a photograph of one; arguably, if the painter is Van Gogh, it’s far more truthful, even though far less “realistic.”"

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/05/opinion/sunday/trump-twitter-biden-misinformation.html Step-by-step Trump disinformation playbook. "Constant repetition makes the charge sound true, and blunts accusations of unethical behavior against Mr. Trump’s own children. With the hashtag, Mr. Trump found a way to tell supporters: Here is all you need to know about the Democratic nominee."

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/11/why-obama-fears-for-our-democracy/617087/ "The degree to which these companies are insisting that they are more like a phone company than they are like The Atlantic, I do not think is tenable. They are making editorial choices, whether they’ve buried them in algorithms or not. The First Amendment doesn’t require private companies to provide a platform for any view that is out there. At the end of the day, we’re going to have to find a combination of government regulations and corporate practices that address this, because it’s going to get worse. If you can perpetrate crazy lies and conspiracy theories just with texts, imagine what you can do when you can make it look like you or me saying anything on video. We’re pretty close to that now."

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/jan/02/praise-vallaud-belkacem-hate-speech-twitter "In America, we're taught from an early age to be absolutist in our defense of free speech. But increasingly, the first amendment of the US constitution is looking a lot like the second amendment: an American exception so broad and so holy that it prevents us even from thinking about how to prevent harm. The EU, Canada, Australia, and almost every other mature democracy recognize that words can be a weapon. But we don't regulate weapons of any variety in this country, and our kneejerk response to even the slightest intimation of limits to speech is a Voltaire-style refusal even to consider them. If only this were still the 18th century! We can't delude ourselves any longer that free speech is the privilege of pure citizens in some perfect Enlightenment salon, where all sides of an argument are heard and the most noble view will naturally rise to the top. Speech now takes place in a digital mixing chamber, in which the most outrageous messages are instantly amplified, with sometimes violent effects."

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2022/05/social-media-democracy-trust-babel/629369/
"By 2013, social media had become a new game, with dynamics unlike those in 2008... This new game encouraged dishonesty and mob dynamics: Users were guided not just by their true preferences but by their past experiences of reward and punishment, and their prediction of how others would react to each new action. One of the engineers at Twitter who had worked on the “Retweet” button later revealed that he regretted his contribution because it had made Twitter a nastier place. As he watched Twitter mobs forming through the use of the new tool, he thought to himself, “We might have just handed a 4-year-old a loaded weapon.”

The changing light at San Francisco
is none of your East Coast light
                                          none of your
                                                                 pearly light of Paris
The light of San Francisco
                                                is a sea light
                                                                      an island light
And the light of fog
                                    blanketing the hills
                        drifting in at night
                                     through the Golden Gate
to lie on the city at dawn
And then the halcyon late mornings
                  after the fog burns off
and the sun paints white houses
with the sea light of Greece
                                with sharp clean shadows
                                       making the town look like
                                                     it had just been painted
But the wind comes up at four o’clock
                                                                    sweeping the hills
And then the veil of light of early evening
And then another scrim
                                when the new night fog
                                                                          floats in
And in that vale of light
                                           the city drifts
                                                                    anchorless upon the ocean

2. “Tell your own story and you will be interesting.” — Louise Bourgeois

6. Start with a pencil. Don’t worry about drawing. Just make marks. Tell yourself you’re simply diagramming, playing, experimenting, seeing what looks like what. If you can write, you already know how to draw; you already have a form of your own, a style of making letters and numbers and special doodles. These are forms of drawing, too. While you’re making marks and drawing, pay attention to all the physical feedback you’re getting from your hand, wrist, arm, ears, your sense of smell and touch. How long can your mark go before you seem to need to lift the pencil and make a different mark? Make those marks shorter or longer. Change the ways you make them at all, wrap your fingers in fabric to change your touch, try your other hand to see what it does. All these things are telling you something. Get very quiet inside yourself and pay attention to everything you’re experiencing. Don’t think good or bad. Think useful, pleasurable, strange. Hide secrets in your work. Dance with these experiences, collaborate with them. They’re the leader; you follow. Soon you’ll be making up steps too, doing visual calypsos all your own — ungainly, awkward, or not. Who cares? You’ll be dancing to the music of art.

10. Make an index, family tree, chart, or diagram of your interests. All of them, everything: visual, physical, spiritual, sexual. Leisure time, hobbies, foods, buildings, airports, everything. Every book, movie, website, etc. The totality of this self-exposure may be daunting, scary. But your voice is here. This will become a resource and record to return to and add to for the rest of your life.

27. As artist Laurel Nakadate has observed, being a parent is already very much like being an artist. It means always lugging things around, living in chaos, doing things that are mysterious or impossible or scary. As with art, children can drive you crazy all day, make you wish all this could go away. Then in a single second, at any point, you are redeemed with a moment of intense, transformative love.

Instead, over the last two years, we have seen influential leaders denigrate and discard the most effective methods for addressing complex threats—international agreements with strong verification regimes—in favor of their own narrow interests and domestic political gain... We are explicitly warning leaders and citizens around the world that the international security situation is now more dangerous than it has ever been, even at the height of the Cold War... Citizens around the world have the power to unmask social media disinformation and improve the long-term prospects of their children and grandchildren. They can insist on facts, and discount nonsense. They can demand—through public protest, at the ballot box, and in many other creative ways—that their leaders take immediate steps to reduce the existential threats of nuclear war and climate change. It is now 100 seconds to midnight, the most dangerous situation that humanity has ever faced. Now is the time to unite—and act."

Its most prominent example was during the founding rally of the OAAU in 1964... So I don't believe in violence—that's why I want to stop it. Those persons reluctant to change, or ignorant of the calendar change, were mocked by those embracing progress, and called “Poisson d’Avril” or April Fish; and so a comic tradition was born."

"In concluding the letter, the writers return to the concept of self-victimization and a call for women to accept the pitfalls that come with freedom. “Accidents that can affect a woman’s body do not necessarily affect her dignity and must not, as hard as they can be, necessarily make her a perpetual victim,” they write. “Because we are not reducible to our bodies. Our inner freedom is inviolable. And this freedom that we cherish is not without risks and responsibilities.”

Arlie Hochschild is the author of Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right.
https://onbeing.org/programs/arlie-hochschild-the-deep-stories-of-our-time/
"Emotional intelligence. The 'crust' of society is very thin. It needs water and sun and care, so that it becomes less brittle." We don't invest in emotional awareness as a culture.

2024/4: https://www.the-reframe.com/blame-management/ "Trump is not a cause; rather, he is an inevitability of supremacist systems."

1957/1: MLK https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/king-papers/documents/facing-challenge-new-age-address-delivered-naacp-emancipation-day-rally "We stand today between two worlds: the dying old and the emerging new. We’re all familiar with this old world that is passing away. We have seen it in its international aspects, in the form of colonialism and imperialism... And all of these people for years [in China, India, Pakistan, Africa] lived under the domination of either the French, the Dutch, the Belgian, or the British... We have seen it right here in this nation in the form of segregation and discrimination. And we all know the long history of this old order in the U.S. We know that it had its beginning back in 1619, when the first slaves landed on the shores of this nation... The famous Dred Scott decision of 1857 well illustrates the status of the Negro during slavery. For it was in this decision that SCOTUS said that the Negro is not a citizen of this nation; he is merely property subject to the dictates of his owner. That was the attitude that prevailed. And then came 1896. And it was in that year that SCOTUS of this nation rendered the Plessy versus Ferguson decision. And that year SCOTUS established the doctrine of separate but equal as the law of the land. But we all know what happened as a result of the Plessy doctrine: there was always the strict enforcement of the separate without the slightest intention to abide by the equal... My friends, let nobody fool you. All of the loud noises that we hear today from the legislative halls of the South (Yes), in terms of nullification and interposition and outlawing the NAACP, are nothing but the death groans from a dying system. (Yes) [extended applause] The old order is passing away (Passing away), and the new order is coming into being. (Amen) ... [Greek form of love, Agape] We’ve got to let him know that we are helping him as well as ourselves when we fight this issue, and this great problem of injustice. This is what we must continue to do, keep it within the realm of struggling against an evil system and not against persons who might be caught up in the system..."

2024/9: https://crimethinc.com/2024/09/17/reflecting-on-occupy-wall-street-thirteen-years-later "There must be a holistic way of approaching the work and integrating healing practices. We must build a culture of care if we are to outlive fascism."

2026/5: https://qz.com/emotional-labor-starbucks-baristas-green-apron-service-051926 [mandated sincerity] "Hochschild defined emotional labor as "the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display" that is "sold for a wage." In her 1979 book "The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling," Delta Air Lines flight attendants + bill collectors told her about the ways their employers extracted emotional, physical, and cognitive work. She estimated that 1/3 of US men and 1/2 of women held jobs that called for substantial emotional labor, and in many of them, they were trained to accept feeling rules that served the company's commercial purpose... [starbucks] What makes this notable from a labor standpoint is not the act of writing on a cup. It is the demand that the act appear authentic. In Hochschild's framework, this is a demand for deep acting on an assembly line. The company does not merely want baristas to comply with a display rule. It wants them to internalize it, to mean what they write, and to do so 100's of times per shift."

"When Denon released his Egyptian sketches as a folio, along with an account of his voyage, it kicked the Egyptian Revival into high gear in both France and in England. Egyptian patterns were everywhere, sometimes copied directly from Denon’s drawings: in furniture, in architecture, and on clothes. Egyptian artifacts were displayed at the Louvre and the British Museum. Obelisks went up as public monuments in Paris, London, and Washington, D.C. Spiritualists held Egyptian-themed seances."
