She would remind us that it’s ok to be angry at the eugenicist, capitalist, patriarchal system we’re trapped in. She would encourage us to embrace our disabilities AND our anger. She would give us permission to be our true selves… to refuse to hide for the comfort of others. She passed away last November but left an indelible mark on our community. I want to honour her this month by continuing the tradition she started and inviting all my disabled peers to be proud, unapologetically themselves and angry if that’s what they feel. Don’t hide. Don’t smile and say “I’m fine” when you’re in pain. Don’t settle for being treated as “less than”. Don’t let the bastards grind you down."

Move the inputs below and watch the financing gap appear — then switch over to a commercial deal and see why that one pencils. You can experiment with construction costs, rents, financing assumptions, affordability requirements, and other variables to see how quickly funding gaps emerge—and what it takes to close them." https://thewychefamily.com/affordable-housing-is-harder-to-build-than-we-want-to-admit/ "Housing is a justice issue. Exclusionary zoning has done real harm. Single-family-only neighborhoods have often functioned as tools of racial and economic exclusion. The lack of affordable housing in Ann Arbor is not an accident. It is the result of decades of policy choices, market dynamics, scarcity, and political resistance. In some cases, it reflects the deliberate efforts of neighbors who have spent almost 100 years trying to prevent change... We cannot simply declare that affordable housing should exist and then act surprised when it does not get built. We cannot manifest it into being. We have to finance it, zone for it, subsidize it, make land available for it, and welcome the neighbors who will live in it." https://thewychefamily.com/zoning-exists-for-a-reason/ Cases such as Buchanan v. Warley (1917) and Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty Company (1926) serve as stark examples of how zoning was manipulated to oppress communities of color. In these instances, homogeneous zoning carved out exclusive areas for white families in the name of promoting "health, safety, welfare," or "stability" in communities, while excluding others.

Iron Man aka Tony Stark was a central hero of these dominant stories we told ourselves. He was a capitalist genius billionaire arms dealer who saves the world by single-handedly developing increasingly autonomous mechanized weapons over which he has an ever-increasingly level of personal control, which he deploys throughout the world however he sees fit. I remember when this would describe the villain of most stories, but over the last 2 decades of our dominant mode of storytelling, Tony Stark was one of our primary ways of understanding heroes. His wealth was proof of his goodness; his development of technology was proof of his right to use it; his genius enabled him to make, all by himself, the marvels that brought salvation to the universe, and the creation of those marvels bestowed upon him license to decide how those marvels should be best used. It shouldn’t perhaps surprise us that after a decade or so of this we wound up with Donald Trump and Elon Musk. I’ve said more often than I’ve said almost anything that I think what must change more than policy or attitudes or actions is the human spirit—our collective belief in what is and should be and can be, which governs the scope of what is possible...It’s a popular story, supremacist domination. It’s the story that’s held power in my country for my whole life. It's guided our decades of supremacist global colonialism and militarism, of intervention and exploitation and domination."

Managers do not want to get left behind by competitors and want to reduce their wage bill. Hence, they take a (partly wrong, partly incomplete) guess on what workers do and consider that to be fairly easy and automatable."

In the past few years, the American Left has reformed once again, largely in protest of the Israeli slaughter in Gaza. Like the Vietnam War a generation ago, those protesters have been aided by a central, clarifying conflict—there has been, relative to the DSA of yesteryear, a bit less getting sidetracked into pointless internecine conflicts over the progressive stack—and unlike the Weather Underground, they have been free of any organized Action Faction, of any real effort to cross from building occupation and protest into violence. Of course, this has not spared them the same accusations of pointlessness, unreasonableness, and bigotry for failing to adequately appreciate the glorious incineration of children by US taxpayer-funded bombs. Merely protesting outside of sites dedicated to the auctioning of violently seized land is treated as a kind of violence itself, met with the same yowls and fainting that would meet actual efforts to resist the flattening of Gaza City, the illegal settlement of the West Bank, or at least the United States’ insistence on providing political and material cover for the ethnic cleansing of a captive population. They are still called childish for believing that the world does not have to be this way." https://mastodon.green/@gerrymcgovern/116856025337597605 "The emergence of Trump tells us that the civilization we live in is absolutely rotten, depraved and evil. The fact that we are ruled by evil and depraved men such as Trump, Putin, Thiel, Bezos, Zuckerberg and Musk, is not so much a reflection on our species, as a reflection on Western Civilization. Your doctor knows that diet and lifestyle are effective interventions to reverse and prevent illness, but they just don't have time to look at everything you're eating and drinking and think about how these inputs are or are not well-suited to your bio-individual needs. Your therapist can provide that time and attention that's required to understand your unique situation, but they generally don't have the physiology background to consider the extent to which your mental and emotional symptoms might be attributable to nutritional deficiencies and biological dysregulation. This is where nutritional therapy can really make a difference. If you or someone you care about has been struggling to navigate frustrating, persistent symptoms that you don't understand the cause of, consider looking into nutrition and lifestyle therapy as a way of gaining greater control over your day-to-day health." ~Alec Hershman, NTP

This is part of a broader effort by the federal government to repress pro-Palestine activism." ++ "U-M Regent Sarah Hubbard confirmed that her house was one of the ones vandalized that prompted the indictment. “I’m very appreciative of the tireless work done by various levels of law enforcement on the U-M campus, in Michigan and across the U.S. to bring this matter forward,” she said in a X post... “I’m sure in 50 years, the (U-M) will be putting statues up to (the protestors) and saying how much they appreciated their courage in retrospect, but right now, they’re being very cowardly at the very least,” said James Johnson, a university student. He was one of roughly 20 people protesting the arrests outside the US Courthouse in Detroit. 2026/6: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jun/16/minnesota-immigration-enforcement-conspiracy-charges 15 charged in Minnesota over response to ICE immigration crackdown. "Prosecutors claim defendants were part of Minneapolis-based ‘antifa’ groups that ‘violently oppose’ law enforcement" https://ni.hil.ist/@riotmuffin/116783316573685976 "The recent #Minneapolis arrests of 15 anti-ICE activists have made headlines not just because of the need to support those who put themselves on the line to defend our communities, but also because of the particular maliciousness and overreach of the prosecution. In announcing the charges, the US Attorney called attention to the profile banner below - containing the extremely popular "Welcome to Minneapolis" image of the burning 3rd precinct from 2020. Pretty much everyone worth knowing in the Twin Cities has it as a sticker or tshirt.... (1/3)" https://theintercept.com/2026/06/17/ice-indictment-minneapolis-protesters/ "Trump’s indictment of 15 Minneapolis protesters is a well-worn strategy to criminalize political resistance as a “conspiracy.”" https://www.wewillfreeus.org/prairieland-part-4-blueprint-for-repression/ "The disproportionate sentences stem from a July 4, 2025 noise demonstration outside the Prairieland ICE Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, where protesters gathered to set off fireworks in solidarity with detainees held inside." "This is an attack on everyone who opposes ICE's ethnic cleansing agenda. If the judge could have sentenced protesters to death, he would have." 💀 "Prairieland also appears increasingly less like an isolated prosecution and more like a blueprint. Just days before these sentencings, federal prosecutors in MN filed conspiracy charges against 15 activists accused of interfering with ICE operations, further signaling the spread of the same prosecutorial logic used in TX. These cases are unfolding amid a broader federal crackdown shaped in part by National Security Presidential Memorandum-7, issued by President Trump after the killing of Charlie Kirk, which formally directed federal agencies to investigate + disrupt so-called antifa-linked networks under a domestic terrorism framework. Prairieland now sits at the center of that transformation." https://hachyderm.io/@inthehands/116800551324172331 "Look, if you show up for a protest and you slash car tires and break a security camera, you do that understanding that there may be personal consequences — and for vandalizing gov property, as the price of civil disobedience, maybe you accept your 9-month sentence + probation. You do not accept a 50- or 70- or 100-year sentence. Many murderers get less time than that. If they murdered Alex Pretti or Renee Good, they apparently get no time at all. This isn’t justice. It’s suppression. It’s authoritarianism." [vs jan 6th, comics] https://nickanderson.substack.com/p/crime-and-punishment https://www.nlg.org/prairieland-defendants-sentencing/ "Today, eight defendants in the Prairieland case were sentenced to prison, with a combined time of 450 years. Each of the defendants received sentences ranging from 30 to 100 years in federal prison. This is a grave injustice and nothing short of malicious political persecution by the federal government."

2026/6: https://www.the-reframe.com/healing "they try to cast their critics as the real racists, and those who try to resist their oppression and suppression as the real supremacists, and antifascists are the real fascists. There seems to be a reputational cost that attends their actual beliefs, one they’d rather make others pay, and they seem to know it." https://www.the-reframe.com/the-submerged-story/ "Speaking of the comfort of powerful people, we have plenty of ethnic-cleansing concentration camps being filled up with brown people, who have been arrested by kidnapping squads for the crime of being brown people, and a few people who resisted this horrific state of affairs down Texas way were just given draconian sentences for even the most tertiary involvement with said resistance. These concentration camps are a natural inevitable outgrowth of a national prison industrial complex that profits off of human incarceration, and the kidnap squads are a natural and inevitable outgrowth of a nationwide policing state that sucks up over half of many municipalities' budgets and delivers mostly brutality and authoritarianism."

2026/7: https://www.jwz.org/blog/2026/06/jonathan-ross-murdered-renee-good-and-should-be-indicted/ "Two ICE agents harassed a poll worker on Election Day, demanding she remove social media posts they claimed threatened federal agents. Gonyea's experience is just the latest example of how far federal law enforcement is willing to go to silence critics of President Donald Trump's mass deportation efforts." https://unicornriot.ninja/2026/charged-in-anti-ice-conspiracy-two-minnesota-defendants-speak-out/ "“It’s about quelling dissent in Minneapolis,” said healthcare worker and activist Isaac Sant to Unicorn Riot a week after his home was raided. “And it’s about coming after the movement that rose up against ICE during Metro Surge in December and January. Which Sant noted, is “not going to work.”"

"The teachers, who already make significantly less than in comparable districts, would get a 1.5 percent annual pay raise for two years, well below inflation, and would make teachers give up their rights to pay less for health insurance even if a bill that passed the state Legislature in December 2024 that would require public employers to pay at least 80 percent is signed into law. The tentative agreement also reduced teachers’ paid prep time and increased some class sizes... “Back in 2010, when we took a 3 percent pay cut, Todd Roberts, the then-superintendent, took an 8 percent pay cut for him and all his cabinet. We hoped Jazz and her cabinet would say, ‘Look, we understand how hard this insurance thing is impacting teachers, so we’ll take the same deal in solidarity.’ They would not do it, which was quite disappointing.” ... “I think people are ready to escalate actions,” Klein says. “I’m not saying strike. I’m not saying that, but members are ready to do things right now like I’ve never seen them before. We’re gonna try to reach a ratifiable deal that will get us back on the right track with the district. That’s our goal. We’re not there yet. We haven’t really begun.”"

2026/6: https://chrissalzman.com/2026/06/superintendent-jazz-parks-must-resign-from-aaps/ "The primary task of a superintendent of a school system is to provide systems in which the district can operate and grow. At the moment there is an abdication of that responsibility. Between alarming budget issues and the inability to present a sufficient contract to teachers it is past time for the board to request the superintendent’s resignation. Other people can give thorough lists of specific wrongs and ills. I’m interested in those, but that’s not why I’m writing this. I’m writing this because I have seen the morale of teachers and staff shrink over the course of this year and yet, despite that, they show up for our kids in millions of small and large ways that we do not deserve. I place the blame for this lack of morale squarely on the superintendent. If the goal was to demoralize teachers so much that they will leave in droves over the summer, we have achieved that goal!"

Our BLK BOTTOM collection highlights the fullness, body and complexity of the urban grind... Its population of 13.5 million makes it one of the most densely populated countries in the world.Located near the Equator, Burundi has cooler temperatures than other tropical regions, thanks to its mountain chains and a high plateau, reaching elevations up to 9,055 feet (2,760 meters) at the peak of Mount Heha, and 6, 000 feet (1,800 meters) on the country’s southeast plateaus."

In response to this tragedy, as well as to unbearable conditions and the looming threat of deportation, detainees and their supporters are staging strikes and protests nationwide. One of these fights is playing out at Delaney Hall, a federal detention facility located in Newark, NJ. The jail closed in 2017, but the private prison profiteering company GEO Group reopened it in 2025 in return for $1 bn of taxpayer money. T admin officials have blatantly lied about resistance to ICE, w the acting Assistant Secretary declaring that “There is NO hunger strike at Delaney Hall. There are NO subprime conditions or abuse at the facility.” Likewise, DHS issued a statement maintaining that “No individuals were directly struck by pepper ball projectiles.”" https://unbreaking.org/blog/briefing-2026-06-05/ "Detainees have been pepper-sprayed and beaten, as have protesters and observers outside the facility, including Senator Andy Kim."

One of them even put a hand on their gun (brandishing) to no avail. The uniformed ICE/Geo Nazis bailed them out + pulled them inside as the crowd closed in." https://todon.eu/@CrimethInc/116671517890182058 [image DHS tweet] "When they say "safety," they do not mean your safety. They don't mean the safety of the detainees who are on hunger strike to call attention to the life-threatening conditions in Delaney Hall. They don't mean the safety of the protesters they beat and tear-gas. They only mean the safety of their regime. That is the only kind of safety they care about."

2026/6: [video] https://bird.makeup/users/climatedefiance/statuses/2064089858323198313 "Delaney Hall is a concentration camp in Newark, NJ. Just 11 miles from the most populous U.S. city, this grey barbed wire building holds 300 political prisoners w/o trial, in horrendous conditions. They are now on a hunger + labor strike, protesting their unlawful imprisonment + the horrendous facilities in the facility. Outside Delaney Hall, brave activists are standing up vs these human rights violations. We interviewed some of these activists about the conditions inside. Climate justice, human rights, and the right to migration are all interconnected issues. The worsening global climate crisis is combining with an increase in global authoritarianism and wealth inequality to push a migration of people unlike anything the world has seen. It’s up to us to stand up against this authoritarianism before it’s too late." https://bird.makeup/users/climatedefiance/statuses/2064414924923625973 "We interviewed legendary activist and journalist Chuck Modiano about the horrific conditions inside Delaney Hall. Hear his first hand account about how our world's most vulnerable are being treated by our modern day gestapo. Free them all, abolish ICE and close Delaney Hall now."

2026/6: https://theintercept.com/2026/06/20/fbi-ice-delaney-hall-protest-informants/ "“They were asking me to inform,” said a protester, one of dozens contacted by the feds, who was arrested while playing the cello."

They are pushing Search more into the “here’s your processed answer” direction that “A.I. Overviews” have established (you know, those AI snippets in current Search that are wrong ~10% of the time). So they are mostly giving up on the paradigm of providing links to information. If you do care about the web, about people’s ability to participate in it as more than mere passive consumers, this needs to be taken seriously. De-googlifying your mental apparatus becomes more urgent today. Find other search engines, don’t use the Chrome browser. These industry groups are well practiced and well-funded to lobby hard. The eight organizations analyzed in the paper collectively employed over two hundred lobbyists, spending over $100 million on lobbying and political donations... The result of the highway lobby’s activities?

-Transportation is the 2nd highest household expense (avg US household spends >$12,000/yr on owning + operating vehicles)
    - 90%+ U.S. people don’t have access to frequent transit.
    - Roadway maintenance strains state + local budgets while the federal government continues to support expensive highway expansions.
    - The US transportation system continues to be the country’s biggest contributor to climate change + a major source of inequities."

"But it was the sheer scale of the proposals, the suddenness with which they’ve appeared and the secrecy surrounding them that is punching emotion into the issue, turning out thousands of Democrats and Republicans for tense town hall meetings around the state. Residents said they often discovered a data center project in their town through a quiet rezoning request by a company no one recognized. They said their small town boards were outmatched compared with wealthy companies in a hurry to break ground. There is no official count of the number of proposed projects in the state, but Michael Bommarito, a Michigan-based former tech worker who published an activist handbook, “How to Fight a Data Center,” counted at least 16 major projects as of December." https://fightadatacenter.com/

2026/5: https://www.latitudemedia.com/news/in-indiana-an-anatomy-of-data-center-opposition/ "Sentinel’s proposed data center would be built in unincorporated Eagle Creek Township, population 1,700. “Project Shirley” would represent a $5 bn investment by Sentinel. The company told local officials that it would create thousands of construction jobs and a few hundred permanent operational roles in Eagle Creek. But residents of the township and the wider Lake County aren’t just concerned about preserving the region’s agricultural heritage and the physical and cultural impact of adding several data centers overnight. Those issues — which they have in common with communities all across the U.S. — are colliding with several years of rising electricity bills as well as a deep distrust of the local utility, which has negotiated a handful of deals with other data centers in the county using a unique tariff structure it built specifically for data center load...According to Data Center Watch, at least $64 billion worth of data center projects have been blocked or delayed thanks to local opposition, as of summer 2025. Dozens of states are considering data center moratoriums, and state lawmakers around the country have introduced no less than 264 data center bills in 2026 alone. At the same time, public resistance to data centers has risen; and the top concern is how the enormous facilities might change local life."

2026/5: https://soundcloud.com/thismachinekillspod/patreon-preview-456-do-not "We discuss reporting on why real communities are opposed to these infrastructure projects and how these projects are being pushed through in black-boxed, stonewalled, fast tracked ways that are designed to ignore, dismiss, and override anybody who isn’t immediately and blindly onboard." https://www.politico.com/news/2026/05/08/georgia-data-centers-water-00909988 "Another specific kind of water use risk from data centers: they may lie about their peak usage and make unmetered connections to the water mains that the utility doesn't even know about." https://www.businessinsider.com/nerc-issues-alert-on-data-centers-threatening-grid-stability-2026-5 Data centers wreaking havoc on the national grid https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/may/09/google-developers-significantly-misstate-carbon-emissions-of-proposed-uk-datacentres https://soundcloud.com/thismachinekillspod/457-dc3-the-terraforming "We’re going in for a threepeat – it’s Data Centers 3, as we continue with our analysis of the data center industry, the opposition to these hyperscale projects, and the real impacts on social communities and natural ecosystems. We get into the industry playbook of using “counterinsurgency tactics” to undermine opposition to these data centers and the ideological playbook of effective altruists treating these projects like they are just 4X strategy games. Plus how Mr. Wonderful is terraforming Utah by building a massive natural gas power plant to fuel a hyperscale data center right on the shores of the Great Salt Lake."

2026/5: https://mstdn.ca/@avilewis/116562988383824877 "It’s time to build affordable homes, a national network of public grocery stores, electric buses and an east-west clean energy grid. Not massive corporate AI data centres unleashed without any democratic debate. There's also no real data sovereignty in an AI ecosystem dominated by U.S. tech giants." https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/b-c-ai-data-centre-plan-vancouver-kamloops-9.7195426

2026/5: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/may/08/ai-datacenters-democracy "This brewing populist resistance isn’t just about limiting local development – it represents a critical new front in the fight against tech-enabled authoritarianism. Where else can people push back on job-eating algorithms, distorting deep fakes, and autonomous drone strikes? From rural North Carolina to suburban Virginia to the foothills and farmlands of New Mexico and Oregon, ordinary people are coming together across partisan divides to say no to a status quo that allows tech lobbyists to ram through datacenter deals at a breathtaking clip, often behind a veil of secrecy enforced by NDAs. In deep red Indiana, more than 10 counties have enacted moratoriums or temporary bans on new AI datacenters; the Seminole Nation in Oklahoma recently passed a moratorium for their territory; and across New Jersey, project after project has been cancelled due to local fury about the raw deals on offer. Organizing to block datacenter construction is a way for regular people to ensure their objections and preferences are heard; disruptive protest is a form of leverage for people who lack wealth and political connections. In the words of the antitrust expert Zephyr Teachout: “If you want democratic governance of AI, block datacenters. Google’s not coming to any democratic table, not listening to any rules, without people showing force.” As usual, ordinary people are ahead of their leaders. The remarkable organic growth of the datacenter resistance movement across geographies, economic interests and ideology reflects the myriad harms that come with AI infrastructure and growing anger at the tech elite."

This open-source document is chilling: as of 24 June, 33 AI datacenters have been completed and are operational, 68 are under construction and 41 are proposed. And there had been 7,005 reports submitted through the online form, which is to say, all that is known about them is what people have seen. As a post on her blog is headlined: “If data centers are so great, why are they being built in secret?”"

Two guys in papier-mâché masks from Saguenay, Quebec, have been playing music together for 20 years since they were 13 years old. For most of that time, they existed in relative obscurity. Then, KEXP posted a video of them playing four songs and the internet lost its mind... Western music uses twelve notes per octave. You can find all of them on a piano — seven white keys and five black. The distance between any two adjacent keys is a half step. Microtonal music uses the notes between those notes. A quarter tone sits exactly halfway between two adjacent piano keys — a pitch that, on a standard instrument, doesn't exist. Most rock and pop you've ever heard lives on whole steps and half steps. AdP lives on the steps in between."

Humanity rewriting the social contract together sounds nice; less so when you have a gun to your head. Time is of the essence, we’re told. Maybe that’s true. A lot of the things that we take for granted on the modern social internet, like a friendly “voice” used to communicate to users, were pioneered by Flickr, and then quickly came to be considered standard expectations for the apps and sites that followed... Flickr wasn't a social platform first — it was a photography platform first. That means it was designed to store high-resolution versions of every image, and didn't distort pictures with things like filters. Every image showed details like what kind of camera had taken the photo, and even what specific settings were used to take the shot. People started building communities around the then-new idea of using tags to help them find content by topics online — an idea that would directly influence the creation of hashtags on Twitter a few years later...The beautiful thing about communities and platforms like Flickr is that they remind us that not everything on the internet has to be ephemeral, not everything on the web has to be hyper-commercial. Sometimes a bunch of decent people can do a good thing for the right reasons, and the result of that work can persevere for decades."

"...it's quite depressing actually, but very informative, and aimed towards consumers understanding labels at groceries stores and what they mean. The director explained that he made this film after living a healthy life in Europe for 20 years without thinking much about his diet, then returning to the US and quickly becoming sick eating the food he ate growing up here. He talked about how generally in Europe the thought process around food and farming methods is to not eat or allow products until they are proved safe. That was my experience in northern Italy and I remember being amazed at walking in what would equate to a big supermarket there and seeing big posters in the grocery section declaring "until or if GMO's are proved safe, we will not be a science experiment". Here, the mantra is generally to allow food and farming methods until they are proven to harm. Often the task to prove harm is placed upon the corporations that make the product, and thus the data is often questionable. The task then falls on us, the people, to figure out how to navigate the endless labels and decide what is safe and what is not. We prefer, whenever possible, to operate within a food system where a conversation with the producer can override or take the place of a label. That is the best certification in my book, and we are grateful to live in a place where our farm can operate in that way. However once you step off the farm or farmers markets and into the grocery store, understanding the marketing tactics of the food industry is crucial."

"I’m generally interested in critiquing the way bio-medicine defines the body-mind, and in collectively deconstructing/augmenting the stories it offers us about our physical, emotional, social and spiritual experiences. And in doing so finding broader, more holistic understandings and approaches to things together. I’m also committed to challenging the dr/patient, practitioner/client model with its particular power dynamics of alleged expert/passive recipient, and instead hold therapeutic space where I look to be more of an ally or partner in coming to understandings, resting deeply, resourcing ourselves, healing. My practice is queer, body positive and trauma aware."

2026/4: https://lisagraumlich.substack.com/p/the-unfinished-sentence "essay from Dr. Lisa Graumlich, a fellow in our 2025 Storymaker cohort: “I have also stood at the edge of what we know and felt something else entirely. The places where a question opens into a larger question. Where the boundary between what I understand and what I am being asked to become starts to thin… This is not how we usually talk about science. But it is, I would argue, how science actually works at its highest register.” In this piece, she makes a distinction between science as a contract, with all the deliverables that entails, and science as a collaboration—a covenant, as she names it, “a mutual binding”—to a question, to each other, to something far larger than any of us." "You enter a covenant not knowing exactly where it will take you. That uncertainty is not a flaw in the design. It is the design... It requires this: that we treat our questions as belonging to the community, not to us. That we treat our collaborators as people we are in covenant with, not in contract with. That we understand science not as a transaction between a researcher and a resistant world, but as a thin place — where what we think we know gives way to what we are being called to understand."

2026/5: https://www.blog.brittanijamesmd.com/p/long-covid-changed-everything "Modern medicine has become extremely dependent on illnesses that can be measured, scanned, categorized, and objectively confirmed. Long COVID did not simply introduce a new chronic illness. It exposed the limits of a healthcare system built around the assumption that illnesses are only fully real once they become visible through testing. Long COVID did not create medicine’s discomfort w invisible illness. It exposed a preexisting pattern that millions of patients [w/ Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, dysautonomia, POTS] had been navigating for decades. Modern healthcare systems are extraordinary at many things. They are optimized for acute stabilization, procedural intervention, and emergency response. They excel when a pt presents w a broken bone, a heart attack, a bacterial infection — conditions w clear biological signatures, established treatment pathways, and the expectation of resolution. It was not designed for chronic ambiguity, multisystem illness, longitudinal complexity, or fluctuating disability. It was designed for throughput — for the patient who comes in, receives a diagnosis, receives a treatment, and gets better. Long COVID pts often did none of those things on schedule... Among conditions receiving the least funding relative to their disability burden, the majority are female-predominant. Conditions primarily affecting men receive a median of 5.2x more NIH funding per year lived w disability vs conditions primarily affecting women."

2026/6: https://headaches.org/blog/an-interview-with-kathy-oshea/ "I have lived w chronic migraine for ~20 and was recently diagnosed with POTS, an autonomic disorder. I have also recently learned that my serious experience with endometriosis, which led to a full-hysterectomy in my mid-30's, is a possible comorbidity of migraine... There are no simple solutions for migraine and its complexity of pain and suffering; there is no “cure.” The “answers” come in fits and spurts through the right combinations of treatments, lifestyle, and support. Literature speaks to all; it does so in a way that reaches us viscerally."

Many of the victims were women and children. Rape and mutilation were also alleged. It was part of the Nakba and expulsion of Palestinians from Palestine. As news of the massacre spread, it sparked terror among Palestinians throughout the region, convincing many to flee their homes. It also strengthened the resolve of Arab governments to attack, which they did a few weeks later, sparking the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. Menachim Begin was leader of the Irgun at the time. He went on to found the Likud Party and he became prime minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983. Many Arab states produced postage stamps commemorating the massacre. Around 500,000 tons of garbage now blanket displacement sites, 80% of which are infested with rats carrying dozens of diseases. 71% of desalination plants and 80% of water infrastructure have been destroyed. 🔹Amawi argues the crisis is a deliberate and “calculated ecological disaster” that could kill more through disease and starvation than bombs, warning that aquifer damage and seawater intrusion risk long-term collapse and urging immediate international intervention.

2026/4: https://tante.cc/2026/04/21/ai-as-a-fascist-artifact/ "“A.I.” is being shoved into the scientific process (for review as well as the writing of scientific books and papers) as well as education. In spite of studies upon studies showing that using “AI” degrades our cognitive capabilities especially when it comes to critical thinking and problem solving. And this is not subtext. A few weeks ago Sam Altman presented his vision of the Future where “Intelligence” is something you rent from OpenAI: Intelligence and the ability to make sense is actively being taken from you not just to make money but to control your ability to criticize structures of power. This is the definition of epistemic injustice... “AI” is being introduced increasingly into government processes: “AI” is promised to bring more efficiency into the administration, is supposed to “reduce bureaucracy”. But bureaucracy is not just an annoyance but one of the central tools that democratic societies have established to realize the core idea of democracy: Transparency in the application of power in order to be able to control said power. Democracy is not just about voting but about ensuring that all power – especially by the state – is used in accordance with the law and in a fair way. Stochastic “AI” systems break that promise. The “AI” just says that you do not get the support you need. No idea why, might be a bug or a deeply racist training data set. Nobody knows. Now it is on you to prove that you are in the right, it is on you to fight for your right bc the processes that were supposed to protect yr rights are hollowed out in order to make them faster: We are forcing marginalized, disenfranchised people to fight vs a black box trained on the data that already contains their disenfranchisement. We’re supposed to live in a world where the computer just gets to say “No”. The computer built, configured and run by a few powerful men."

2026/5: https://nooneshappy.com/article/the-ai-bubble/ [echoes of '00's telecom bubble / '08 bank bailout] "A federal backstop for chip investment? Open AI's CFO Sarah Friar confirmed. The retraction arrived within 24 hours... David Sacks, Trump’s AI and crypto policy czar: “There will be no federal bailout for AI.” This is not an argument that AI does not work. AI is useful. But the capital expenditure being committed is not priced for a technology that is useful. It is priced for a technology that is transformative — for something approaching artificial general intelligence, arriving on a timeline measured in months vs decades. What the field requires, by their own account, is research — not half a trillion dollars in concrete and copper. The buildout is an answer to a question the technology has not yet resolved, built at a scale that forecloses the possibility of changing course when the research points somewhere else... Goldman Sachs’ chief economist concluded that AI had contributed “basically zero” to U.S. economic growth in 2025. The models themselves are getting more expensive per request: Anthropic’s latest flagship ships a new tokenizer that encodes the same text into up to 35% more tokens, inflating the bill w/o changing the output; separately, higher default reasoning effort levels produce longer responses the user did not ask for... The investment generates losses, which generate infrastructure spending, which generates revenue, which absorbs the losses. The economist Paul Krugman has described the arrangement as a “financial ouroboros.” The reason none of them can stop is that the investment, the revenue, and the justification for the next investment are the same transaction. If Microsoft reduces its OpenAI commitment, it loses one of Azure’s largest customers, the AI revenue line that justifies $192 billion in capex, and the earnings growth that holds its stock price — all at once. The same logic binds Alphabet and Amazon to Anthropic: the equity position + the cloud contract are the same bet. Unwinding one unwinds both." https://isaiprofitable.com/ [spending + revenue data of all the major AI companies.] https://kyla.substack.com/p/everyone-is-gambling-and-no-one-is "The FT reports that OpenAI’s partners have taken on $100 bn in debt to build A.I. compute capacity, which is scary, because debt is where things get dangerous. The dot-com bubble was mostly an equity blow up, meaning there wasn’t this web of complex who-owes-who. Once you get debt involved, it gets very tricky very quickly. when we think about the future, we often think of the US as number one global superpower big guy pants, but China is investing in what is required to succeed in AI, which is energy. The US decided to do the opposite... People know that we are staking the economy on something that doesn’t really promise much other than hey :) this thing will take your job :) and it’s gonna do art now :) and maybeee make a lot of people real rich but your electricity bill (which is already flipping voters) is going to go up. And China might win"

"While many people compare the Israeli occupation to apartheid, the Israeli occupation is much, much bloodier. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission confirmed ~21,000 total deaths in South Africa between 1948-1994. The death toll since 2023 in Palestine alone (a much smaller population) is several times that. While apartheid policies in South Africa imposed segregation, ethnic cleansing, and racially targeted violence, the Israeli government is intentionally pursuing genocide as state policy. And all the bloodshed up to now is not enough: today, the Knesset voted to begin hanging prisoners. Not to mention the ongoing bombardment and occupation of Lebanon." https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/mar/30/israel-passes-law-death-penalty-palestinian-convicted-terrorists

It’s no secret that Leslie Wexner, co-founder of Bath & Body Works and owner of Victoria’s Secret, Justice and Abercrombie & Fitch, was a client of Jeffrey Epstein... as I reexamine these spaces with the knowledge that they were crafted by Epstein, Wexner and Brunel, marketed toward the target demographic for their sex crimes, I realize that the sinister undertones were real. And they played a major role in establishing our ideas of what beauty looked like: To be beautiful was to be razor-thin, white, hyperfeminine and smoothly half-naked."

Krauss dropped the names of prominent invitees: Hawking, David Gross & Frank Wilczek (who shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in physics), Gerard 't Hooft, Kip Thorne. The boat dropped off the scientists at the beach. Peebles said he remembers being met at the island by someone he described as "a guide," who cautioned the physicists, "Don't go wandering off into the island." Even after his initial arrest and plea deal, people may not have known the extent of Epstein's misdeeds, Woit told NPR, but added that as a scientist, before taking a large donation, "you're going to do some basic research" and "you're going to quickly find out that this guy is a convicted pedophile and a felon. … They knew who they were dealing with."" https://mastodon.social/@gknauss/116308363567836055

The Gemini chatbot is there, if she ever wants to talk to no one...The main arguments against the use of generative A.I. in children’s education are threefold. 1: LLMs encourage cognitive offloading before kids have done much cognitive onloading—that is, if these tools cause atrophy of thought in adults, then we can scarcely overestimate the potential effects on a brain that has not developed those cognitive muscles in the first place. 2: chatbots, which mimic emotional intimacy and tend toward sycophancy, warp how children forge their selfhood and relationships. 3: it confuses ends and means, privileging the most efficient route to the correct answer, the crispest thesis statement, or the neatest drawing over the messier and less quantifiable process of building a thinking, feeling person... Members of the Coalition for an A.I. Moratorium maintain that few teachers or parents appeared to have been consulted on New York’s preliminary A.I. guidelines, which do little to address privacy concerns or the potential negative effects of A.I. use on students’ brain development and mental health. A kindred group, Schools Beyond Screens, was formed last year among parents in the Los Angeles Unified School District, where the superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, is currently on administrative leave following F.B.I. raids of his home and office, in February, allegedly over his ties to a bankrupt ed-tech company that was developing an A.I. chatbot for kids. (Carvalho, who has denied any wrongdoing, is also on the board of Code.org, purveyors of Mix & Move with AI.)"

2026/5: https://www.404media.co/your-ai-use-is-breaking-my-brain/ "The idea that humans may be subconsciously mimicking or learning from the AI writing that they’re reading is kind of the business model of any number of AI-for-education startups, and it’s an idea that has been raised in lots of articles about AI in schools. Last month, the NYT quoted a teacher who said “They are using generative A.I. to write before they learn how to write.” Teachers I spoke to last year lamented that they are spending their very real human hours and considerable brain power trying to determine whether they are grading essays that are written by humans or robots, and know that they are often giving writing notes on papers that were likely written by AI."

2026/5: https://hcommons.social/@jnl/116612581202788358 "NO ONE is gonna have this talk with your kids if you don't. They are just being relentlessly pressured and their role models are themselves pressured and have all of the ambivalent moral commitments and institutional confusion that the last two decades have sown...accompanying your adolescents and teens on their journey of development as writers with their own voice and capacity to wield language on the page for their own purposes is as punk as it gets in 2026"

It’s definitely risky. And I’m not saying you should resist in spite of the risk. I’m saying you should resist bc of the risk. The risk is what helps you remember, at a moment when everyone in authority is (or worse, is pretending to be) suffering from the insane delusion that the future of humanity depends on a computer program that generates probabilistic text strings, that there is something that learning is for, that thinking is for, that work is for, and that you are for, the discovery of which belongs to you. If you start now taking risks that help you remember this, you may become the kind of person who cannot be pushed around by bullies and autocrats, or manipulated by propaganda, or satisfied by a life lived solely for the sake of self-protection and self-enrichment."

Galton Pearson helped normalize the idea that people of various races were fundamentally different in quantifiable ways. This kind of racist thinking is what led to Galton + his peers believing that human intelligence could be measured, and that human brains function very much like machines. That jump, Veatch says, played a major role in selling the public on the fantastical idea of a.i."

How are those values supported or not by entering the discourse in a way that holds space for OpenAI/Anthropic/Google/Meta and all the other actors in this massive push to shove "AI" into every part of our lives as "not all bad"? What are your research goals, what do you value about participating in scholarship, how can you meet those goals/act in accordance with those values and what obstacles are in your way? Part of what makes that middle ground untenable and uncomfortable, I think, is that it requires carrying water for these clearly bad actors. You can set that bucket down and step out onto firmer ground. This does require going against the mainstream, but that gets easier when a) you find you're not alone and b) you see how much of mainstream opinion on this is actually the result of marketing." https://vanessaandreotti.substack.com/p/ai-cheerleading-ai-abstention-and [graphic] "Social cartography of three A.I. orientations: Argumentative comparison between AI cheerleading vs abstention vs re-direction. [Re abstention "Necessary correction: More strategic realism, more attention to scale, less reliance on shame as a theory of change."] For us, the most important distinction the cartography makes visible is between moral certainty and strategic leverage. The abstention orientation often operates from moral certainty with idealized strategic leverage. The use-it-to-fight-back orientation operates from compromised leverage without moral innocence. This does not make the abstention orientation naïve or irrelevant. Conscious objectors are essential to the ecology of the field because they keep the harms visible, they refuse the sedation of inevitability, they interrupt the corporate story that AI is simply another neutral tool waiting to be used well, and they remind us that the infrastructures of AI are not floating in some immaterial “cloud.” They are on land, use water, require minerals and mining, and depend on exploitative labour. They are embedded in militarized, extractive, colonial, corporate, and imperial infrastructures that are already organized toward acceleration, abstraction, dispossession, surveillance, and control...The problem is that we often ask many questions about the dangers of AI while asking far fewer questions about the human and institutional conditions that made those dangers not only possible, but profitable, desirable, scalable, and difficult to refuse...Conscious adoption, as we understand it, requires grief, discipline, suspicion, restraint, and accountability. It begins from the recognition that touching AI means touching something contaminated, something already trained by the patterns that have brought us here: separability, extraction, optimization, enclosure, scale, abstraction, prediction, and domination. This kind of adoption does not ask how AI can make us more productive, more competitive, more efficient, or more impressive. It asks what kinds of capacities may need to be cultivated so that AI does not become only an accelerator of collapse."

Everything about this trial from beginning to end has proven what we have said all along: this is a sham trial, built on political persecution and ideological attacks coming from the top. The state never had a case. The state only has its intimidation, torture, and suppression. The federal government came out in force: using repression, terrorism charges, home raids, multi-million dollar bails, and torturous jail conditions.

[online age verification moral panic] "This system not only allows big tech companies to harvest even more deeply personal data on children, but it creates massive cybersecurity risks. Data harvested by identity verification systems does not stay private. In October last year, Discord suffered a major breach of identity information collected by a contractor* for age verification purposes which has ties to investors in US government surveillance efforts. Another insidious issue with these laws is the reactionary political movement that underlies them. In the U.S., groups that have played a pivotal role in lobbying for age verification include the Heritage Foundation, the rightwing thinktank that orchestrated Project 2025, and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), formerly known as Morality in Media, a far-right activist organisation with religious fundamentalist ties that has fought for decades to restrict “obscene” content online. Nor can the timing of these laws be separated from the broader crackdowns on free expression and protest under the U.S. Trump administration."

Yeah, that Persona. Duo integrates it into Duo Premier / Advantage / Essentials... ...which means many working class folks will have no option but to be enrolled into and use Persona... ...or be fired."

One of their projects maps the current power structure of the tech-oligarch takeover that the US is experiencing and that is threatening social democracies (or really, any kind of democracy) worldwide." https://www.authoritarian-stack.info/ "A strategic handover of core military functions to a private company whose founder, Peter Thiel, has declared that “freedom and democracy are no longer compatible.” ... Democracy persists as a legacy interface— maintained for stability, while being systematically hollowed out and replaced. The question now is whether democratic societies can recognize this formation for what it is—and build alternatives before the infrastructure of control becomes too deeply embedded to dislodge."

"Humans and our close relatives, Neanderthals, produced children together many times before the latter went extinct about 40,000 years ago. As a result, the vast majority of people living today carry a pinch of Neanderthal DNA—the enduring proof of past copulations between our species. Now, scientists have proposed that these prehistoric partnerships overwhelmingly occurred between Neanderthal males and females of our own species, Homo sapiens, with far fewer couplings between Neanderthal females and human males. This strong sexual bias provides the most "parsimonious” explanation for the uneven distribution of Neanderthal alleles (variants of specific genes) in modern human genomes, according to a new study.'
