The explanation comes after this part, which is instructive in itself:
The original iPhone was supposed to include a version of OS X-style Dashboard widgets, namely Weather and Stocks. They wouldn't have looked or acted any differently than any other full-screen iPhone app, but they would have been built like Dashboard widgets, using Apple's web technologies instead of native Objective-C. Since the presentation was to be no different, and the limits of WebKit at the time meant performance wasn't as good as native apps, they were ultimately rewritten in Objective-C anyway.

Other platforms, including Nokia (pre-Windows Phone) and Android went ahead with widgets. What's more, they distinguished them from full-screen apps by making them smaller and letting them live on the home screen, amid the app icons. Power users loved them, but few mainstream customers embrace them. According to HTC, a prominent vendor of Android devices:

"Widgets [on HTC phones] aren't widely used – weather, clock and music are the most used and after that, fewer than 10% of customers use any other widgets.
"Most of you don't modify your home screens much. In fact, after the first month of use, approximately 80% of you don't change your home screens any more."

The battery is incredibly easy to remove and replace.

The display is now one of the first components out, making replacements a little faster. However, it is held in with a significant amount of adhesive and requires very careful and persistent prying and a considerable amount of heat to remove without cracking the glass or cutting cables.

Once you get the device open, several components are modular and fairly easy to replace, such as the cameras, headphone jack, vibrator motor, and speakers.

Replacing anything other than the battery requires first removing the display, risking extra damage on the way to a repair.

5/10 is the lowest iFixit has ever given a Samsung Galaxy (the S4 got 8/10). The HTC One M8 gets 2/10: "display assembly cannot be replaced without tunneling through the entire phone".

The M8 is easier to pull out of its rear case, with screws replacing some of the adhesive and clips from last year. So now it’s merely difficult—instead of nearly impossible—to disassemble the phone without destroying it. Once opened, the same demerits are present in the second generation: the battery is still layered beneath the motherboard, which is still layered beneath a year’s supply of tape, and removing and replacing the display still requires tunneling through the entire phone.

It engaged a young UK designer called Justin Wolter to do that for it – maker of the Gramohorn II's uni-trumpeted predecessor (which was, er, for iPhones). Wolter came up with the dual-trumpet remix of his earlier design, sketched it out and then with a little judicious use of 3D printing, the Gramohorn II was born.

Vlad Savov:
Using the One max in the recommended way — as a very generously proportioned phone — is an exercise in frustration, and nothing exemplifies that better than its major new feature, the fingerprint scanner. Firstly, it’s placed in exactly the wrong place. Sitting immediately below the camera lens and requiring a swipe, it pretty much compels you to smudge the lens every time you want to identify yourself. The need for a vertical swipe is also problematic, since your hand’s natural position is at an angle to the sensor, demanding an unnatural and uncomfortable motion to activate it. Inevitably, that leads to regular failures to recognise your epidermic signature.

Equally enervating is the fact that you have to wake the One max from sleep before swiping to unlock it. The whole point of these fingerprint sensors is to speed up security processes, not make them more finicky, and that’s exactly where the HTC One max fails.

And though you can enrol three different fingers to launch three different apps, that only works from the lockscreen - not anywhere else. Savov says the scanner is "clumsy, awkward, and comfortably in line with the long history of failed attempts at making this technology work."

The trigger I was using for this point of no return when the vendor began making losses.

The list at the time consisted of 13 phone vendors who either merged, were liquidated or acquired after this trigger point was reached. There were no examples of vendors who recovered. Since then two more vendors reached the threshold (Nokia and RIM) and a third will do so this quarter (HTC). One vendor (LG) may be recovering but Nokia has just been acquired and RIM has put itself up for sale. Some Japanese vendors like Panasonic have also called it quits since then. Development of the smartphone operating system is being closely monitored by HTC's Chairwoman Cher Wang, who has been in discussions with Chinese government officials, said the people. The software involves deep integration with Chinese apps like the Twitter-like microblog Weibo and is slated to launch before the end of the year, they said.

…HTC's China-specific software would play into a wider Chinese government policy to encourage the development of a unique local software ecosystem to reduce reliance on Western companies.

The budget iPhone is likely to cost $0 with a two-year contract, while the high-end iPhone continues to cost $200 on contract. That is a major problem for many vendors who have been making bizarrely ambitious pricing decisions.

After disappointing sales of high-end Z10 and Q10, BlackBerry opted to price the Q5 value model above $400. After disappointing sales of the high-end HTC One, HTC opted to price the HTC One Mini at around $500. Samsung has a vibrant low-end range, but it also decided to price the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini at $500.

Taken together, these design and pricing decisions seem wildly optimistic.

By hiring an army of engineers to make an Android skin called Sense UI. How do these other companies differentiate themselves? Huawei and ZTE have no problem sacrificing margins if it means increasing their market share. That’s one strategy. Lenovo has an incredible discturbition network thanks to their successful PC business, so they’re going to leverage that. And as for Samsung, you can’t walk more than one kilometer in any Asian city without seeing a massive ad for the newest Galaxy phone.
Where does that leave HTC? They have huge overhead costs, they can’t afford decent marketing, and they’re competing against Chinese players who know the market better than they do because they’re actually from China.

Here, the problem lies with the camera. Maybe I’m in the minority when I say I care about the quality of my cellphone images, but I do, and the One just doesn’t deliver. Also, this particular HTC model was ranked the sixth bestseller in the Japanese smartphone market during the same period.

"Consumers in Japan have been well known to be picky," Hsu said. "The sales of the HTC's newest smartphone model are the evidence that the company has made a breakthrough in design and technology to cater to the Japanese."...

"In the U.S. and Taiwan, HTC has also adopted the same strategy to attract customers. On the back of its improved production technology, in particular the high-definition panel, the model has been a hit," Hsu said.

The analyst said HTC could very likely achieve its sales target of NT$60bn for the fourth quarter, adding that this sales goal could even be topped on the back of the Butterfly model's current popularity.

The "Butterfly" is HTC's "phablet" - its take on the Galaxy Note size. The iPhone 5 first went on sale in Japan on 21 September. As the story suggests, there are five phone selling better in the market, though there's no indication which ones. (Likely, Samsung and Sony.) Meanwhile, if HTC hits NT$60bn for the quarter, that means its revenues have shrunk by just 40% year-on-year. (Thanks @rquick for the link.)

Complicated: you'd need an HTC handset connected to the Wi-Fi network. And then:
The issue would require the user to install an application that had been specifically designed to harvest details or was uploaded to the Android Market with the specific aim of collecting information. The impact may have been small in the fact that such an app will not see the reach as a more popular app but the security risk does exist.

Minimal but possible risk. Affects the Desire HD, Droid Incredible and more.

If you own one of the affected handsets, you may have already received the fix. If you do not, keep checking the HTC Support site for more information.

HTC is going to focus on 'hero' devices, rather than blanketing the market:
The company’s u-turn follows disappointing global results earlier this month when first quarter net profit fell 26% to $365m, its first quarterly decline in earnings for two years as it faced competition from Apple and Samsung’s Galaxy range.

HTC UK chief Phil Roberson (pictured) told Mobile the manufacturer will return to a strategy of launching a limited number of high-spec devices this year, with a focus on second quarter releases. He said: ‘We have to get back to focusing on what made us great – amazing hardware and a great customer experience. We ended 2011 with far more products than we started out with. We tried to do too much."

One suspects Samsung will be a large obstacle to heroic ambition.

"A close look at what the ITC did and didn't do in Monday's order suggests that the commission went out of its way to permit HTC to continue to compete with Apple.

"First, consider what the ITC didn't do. Apple wanted a cease-and-desist order, which would have barred the sale of infringing phones that are already in the United States. It didn't get one. Nor did the commission order HTC to post a bond based on the sale of allegedly infringing devices while it seeks Presidential review of the commission's decision.

"Instead the ITC issued a limited exclusion order that, significantly, gives HTC twice the usual 60 days to attempt a work-around to Apple's patent. HTC has until April, according to the commission's order, to either remove or replace the infringing technology. HTC announced Monday that it would remove the data-tapping feature".

"He added: 'The ITC is a quick path for settling these disputes. I think this is the beginning of settling.'

"At the briefing, Rubin also announced that Google’s Android platform is now seeing 700,000 activations a day, a 200,000 rise from the figure announced three months ago."

Will this mean lots of settlements? We'll see.
