A lot of people have asked me about my and Jamie and Jeff's recent study published in PNAS, and I wanted to give a brief public explanation. The reason we did this research is because we care about the emotional impact of Facebook and the people that use our product. We felt that it was important to investigate the common worry that seeing friends post positive content leads to people feeling negative or left out. At the same time, we were concerned that exposure to friends' negativity might lead people to avoid visiting Facebook. We didn't clearly state our motivations in the paper.

…Having written and designed this experiment myself, I can tell you that our goal was never to upset anyone. I can understand why some people have concerns about it, and my coauthors and I are very sorry for the way the paper described the research and any anxiety it caused. In hindsight, the research benefits of the paper may not have justified all of this anxiety.

Joshua Brustein:
For years people have been complaining that Facebook’s (FB) privacy controls are too confusing, and the social network made several changes to these policies on Thursday that indicate it agrees.

For new users’ first post, Facebook’s default setting will be to share only with their friends. This makes sense, considering that someone who hasn’t been on Facebook before is less likely to realize what kind of risks he’s taking by posting private thoughts. “We recognize that it is much worse for someone to accidentally share with everyone when they actually meant to share just with friends, compared with the reverse,” the company says in a statement posted on its website.

In addition, Facebook is rolling out a privacy checkup tool, which will remind people whom they are sharing with, which apps they’re connected to, and what kind of information they’re sharing through their profiles. Facebook users will begin seeing the checkups over the next couple of weeks.

Is anyone who is serious about encrypting their online communications really going to be comfortable connecting with Facebook to have those conversations?

If privacy is so important to you, isn’t Facebook the very last place you are likely to be hanging out?

Wouldn’t you take any sensitive conversations away from Facebook, and have them some place where *no* meta data is being collected about who you are talking to, and when? It’s also in question whether Cryptocat can sway the skeptics who may remember the service’s rocky history when it comes to security.

Google looks at glasses and sees a way to search and consume web services on the go. Facebook looks at goggles and sees a new means for social communication.

That’s exactly what scares the fans of Oculus. They wanted the next great gaming experience, not a communication tool.

That brings us to the dangers in the Oculus deal. Let’s start with the thing not to worry about: the money. Facebook has more cash than it can possibly spend. An acquisition like this is just a way of recycling some of it. It’s kind of like Japan Inc. buying golf courses in the US in the 1980s. They had to do something with the money.

What I’m worried about are the odds that the deal won’t live up to Facebook’s lofty expectations. Let’s start with the risks to Oculus.

Tim Bradshaw looks at what ex-Apple staff are doing in Silicon Valley:
[Mike] Matas says working at Facebook can be very different from Apple. Now it is a question of working with users who generate their own content, he says: “You have to design for other people’s stuff.” While Apple’s teams were siloed and rarely met their counterparts in other departments, Facebook is much more collaborative. “A lot of stuff that Paper has developed has gone out into other parts of the company,” he says.

Nonetheless, Paper was developed in secrecy for more than a year before its surprise unveiling in January. That seems more like Apple’s approach than the internet companies’. Facebook and Google often post new services to the web to see how users respond, before improving them based on large-scale, real-world behaviour.

Mr Grignon says Facebook’s sometime motto of “move fast and break things” sits uncomfortably with many longstanding Apple employees. “It’s a recklessness, in a way, of engineering. It works well for folks like Facebook but Apple engineers going into companies like that can experience a certain level of frustration.”

“Whatsapp was definitely an exciting product,” he said. “We never made an offer to acquire them. Press reports to the contrary are simply untrue.”

The source of the reports that Google attempted to pick up WhatsApp for $10bn source back to a report by Fortune citing “two separate sources” claiming Google had previously underbid Facebook.

The Information (paywalled) added to the mix that Google CEO Larry Page met with WhatsApp’s leadership just before Facebook’s acquisition went public in a last minute effort to at least keep WhatsApp from selling.

While Pichai explicitly states that Google made no offer to buy WhatsApp, there was certainly smoke signalling a connection prior to Facebook’s acquisition of the firm. Reports surfaced just over a year ago describing talks between Google and WhatsApp over a possible acquisition, but WhatsApp was quick to deny any such talks.

The answer is surprisingly obvious. It’s a fact well-known to advertisers, though it’s not always appreciated by people who use Facebook or even by folks in the Web ad business: Clicks don’t matter. Whether you know it or not—even if you consider yourself skeptical of marketing—the ads you see on Facebook are working. Sponsored messages in your feed are changing your behavior—they’re getting you and your friends to buy certain products instead of others, and that’s happening despite the fact that you’re not clicking, and even if you think you’re ignoring the ads.

This isn’t conjecture. It’s science. It’s based on a remarkable set of in-depth studies that Facebook has conducted to show whether and how its users respond to ads on the site. The studies demonstrate that Facebook ads influence purchases and that clicks don’t matter.

When people upload their contact lists or address books to Facebook, we try to match that data with the contact information of other people on Facebook in order to generate friend recommendations. For example, we don’t want to recommend that people invite contacts to join Facebook if those contacts are already on Facebook; instead, we want to recommend that they invite those contacts to be their friends on Facebook.

Because of the bug, some of the information used to make friend recommendations and reduce the number of invitations we send was inadvertently stored in association with people’s contact information as part of their account on Facebook. As a result, if a person went to download an archive of their Facebook account through our Download Your Information (DYI) tool, they may have been provided with additional email addresses or telephone numbers for their contacts or people with whom they have some connection. This contact information was provided by other people on Facebook and was not necessarily accurate, but was inadvertently included with the contacts of the person using the DYI tool.

That feedback loop of positive reinforcement is the most addictive element of social media. All those retweets, likes and favorites give us a little jolt, a little boost that pushes us to keep coming back for more. It works whether or not we post the typical social media fodder of lush vacation pictures and engagement announcements or venture into realms that showcase our most daredevilish antics and risqué behavior.

It is one way to understand why people upload things that make us gasp, from my friend’s playful bare-all portrait to more sinister, illegal activities, like the defacing of parks and monuments with graffiti and other acts of outright vandalism.

Our growing collective compulsion to document our lives and share them online, combined with the instant gratification that comes from seeing something you are doing or experiencing get near-immediate approval from your online peers, could be giving us more reason to act out online, for better or for worse.

We are, in other words, one another’s virtual enablers.

An intriguing counterpoint to the notion that all those privacy stories will make us more cautious in what we post online. Wortham wonders whether the opposite is the case, bringing "the realization that one raunchy photo is just a single data point among hundreds".

In Silicon Valley tech companies, typically top engineers — who have an understanding of the product only recorded in their vast brains — and one or two executives make the list. I spent two years at a tech startup that had about 80 people, and the bus number was two, maybe three.

With the way tech is starting to enmesh itself in our lives, I’ve wondered if a sort of bus number existed. How many tech companies are there that, were they to magically evaporate, bring the average person’s life to a significant halt? Which ones would really throw a monkey wrench in the daily fabric of technology? Not behind-the-scene all-stars like NVIDIA, IBM and Intel, but the ones that people associate with their day. Naturally any loss would be filled in by competitors eventually, but there are a few companies whose disappearance would change the game for a significant period of time. (And redefine “first world problems.”)

Remember what happened fifteen months later?
…Facebook has loudly and confidently entered an arena it has no prior experience in, and has set a clear path to expand its influence at its own pace. Facebook Home will provide a halo effect to current Android users that warms them up to a full-blown “Facebook phone” in the years to come.

Not to see if it was still April Fools Day, but to see if it was somehow still 2011.

Because the content of the presentation was remarkably similar to the launch event we did for Windows Phone two years ago.

When we sat down with a blank sheet of paper and designed Windows Phone, we put three words on the wall to guide the team: “Put People First”.

Those three words were chosen around a pretty powerful but simple insight: People are more important than apps, so phones should be designed around you and the people you care about, not the apps you might use to reach them.

None of this is Facebook's fault. I've been test-driving the redesign and it looks and works great. It's a web culture issue - one accentuated by the new News Feed's "bright, beautiful stories".

People yearn to be individuals. They want to be authentic. They have numerous different groups of real-life friends. They stylize conversations. Most days, the offices are like anywhere else at Facebook: whiteboards, toys on desks, shorts and flip-flops, pretty low-key. Around noon on Sept. 14, the second floor was packed. In one of the common areas, a giant screen showed the number of active Facebook users worldwide. About 100 people, including Mark Zuckerberg and his top lieutenants, watched the numbers run up by about a thousand users per minute: 999,980,000 … 999,990,000 … 1,000,000,000. The counter paused for a moment when it rounded 10 digits, as if to emphasize the point: 1 billion users.

He gave a telling and sort of chilling anecdote, for those of us who know how difficult it is to monetize mobile: “Want to know something sort of funny?” he told TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington, “You know the Founder’s Letter in the S-1, well I wrote that on my phone.”

Zuck’s feat is super impressive, considering the letter is about the size of your average MG Siegler post — 2,178 words according to my Word document word count, if you don’t include Zuckerberg’s signature.

It includes the letter, which is extremely long. He may have written it on the phone, but we suspect it was edited on a larger screen. But it points to a key trend: smartphones can be content creation devices for more than trivially short content. (Did he dictate it, we wonder? That would be really interesting.)

To take a smaller example, Twitter swapped out co-founder Evan Williams and replaced him with Dick Costolo, someone with no personal stake in the early vision of the network. Has that been a good thing or a bad thing? It has certainly changed the orientation of the company towards revenue-generating models like advertising — a move that appears to be driven primarily by a desire to justify the company’s alleged market value.
