This is not your traditional BlackBerry. It's unlike anything you've ever held and an entirely new form factor. With this device, BlackBerry has created its own niche market. You won't find any university students using this. Don't expect the passport to be your go-to for selfies, or your music player at the gym. The much-loved Q10 was and still is a phenomenal device. It has now grown up and you are in for a treat.

The Passport is a completely different feel when you pick it up. It's not the classic design, not at this size. For a second it felt like I was picking up a sexy new twist to the original Gameboy and that's a compliment. The keyboard has a different feeling too. It's too wide for one hand. The keys are smoother than anything before. They're almost a tad slippery. I've been told that they have been improved upon since this generation of prototype. The backside had a felt-like feeling to it. Not like the Q10, but more like the Z10 and was easy to grip. With a phone this size and weight, the grippiness goes a long way.

…I can say now that it's a strong device that makes you feel important, powerful, productive and ready to take on the world.

A remarkable-looking phone. Though it probably won't persuade people to switch to BlackBerry, it could well persuade current owners to stay. (Thanks @ClarkeViper for the link.)

In arresting more than 30 people Thursday, the RCMP took the rare step of publicly highlighting its interception of the Canadian company’s supposedly secure “PIN-to-PIN” communications.

…On Friday, the [Canadian] Supreme Court will weigh in on whether police need to first get a judge’s permission to compel Internet companies to disclose basic customer information, which can now be handed over without any warrant. Parliament is on the cusp of passing a law that would explicitly shield corporations from any liability they could face by yielding records to government authorities.

The course of treatment was to manipulate the device's innards to weed out potential threats to secure communication.

In the end, that meant taking most of the fun out of the phone: the president can't play Angry Birds, for example.

"You try to get rid of any functionality that's not really required. Every piece of functionality is an opportunity for the adversary," [former NSA technical director Richard] George says.

According to George, the president simply wanted a phone that enabled him to communicate with his advisers. Though the president was a well known BlackBerry addict at the time, the choice of smartphone model was the NSA's, not Obama's, George explained.

Ryan Faas:
So now BlackBerry seems to be betting that it can sell more BlackBerry 10 handsets to enterprises if it doesn't require companies to use BES 10, the EMM solution for BlackBerry 10 and classic BlackBerry devices that also supports some iOS and Android management capabilities.

Certainly, this will lower the cost of adopting BlackBerry devices. The cost of BES 10 not only includes the cost of the server hardware, but also the time and manpower to set up and manage the servers. If customers are already using an EMM solution from BlackBerry's partners to manage other devices, rolling out BES 10 just to manage BlackBerry devices is a hard sell.

But this is still a risky proposition. BlackBerry 10 devices aren't selling well in the consumer market, and that market is largely dictating what devices are brought into the workplace, regardless of the management or ownership model.

So BlackBerry's move could easily backfire: Removing this restriction may not do much to revive device sales, while also giving organizations one less reason to investigate BES 10 and its expected successor, BES 12.

A new study of financial services firms, commissioned by EMM vendor MobileIron and undertaken by the Ponemon Institute, found that one of BlackBerry's traditional strongholds is crumbling. The study was released [on Thursday] morning.

The survey, which was conducted across a range of financial services organizations and was more expansive than a simple query of MobileIron's existing customer base, found that one-third of financial services companies were completely BlackBerry-free, 41% are in the process of planning or implementing a migration to other mobile platforms, and that slightly more than half (52%) have a team dedicated to migrating from BlackBerry to other platforms. Those numbers show that even the most conservative of organizations are heeding Gartner's call from last fall to plan and start a migration within six months.

I recognize that, in some cases, the leaks reflect people’s genuine interest in BlackBerry. There are a lot of people whose enthusiasm for our company and our products makes them want to know what we will do next — and that can be a tremendous asset for us as a brand.

BlackBerry hasn’t shown that its mobile phone sales are driven by the popularity of its keyboards, he told [Judge William] Orrick.

“The Q10 by and large was a failure” and “has literally not sold,” Taillieu said. BlackBerry “hasn’t provided any evidence of nexus between the keyboard and the commercial success of this device,” he said.

Typo didn’t copy the BlackBerry keyboard and is a “grain of sand” compared to BlackBerry’s, he said.

“BlackBerry’s problems are not related to Typo,” Taillieu said. “We don’t believe Typo is the reason for any loss of sales to BlackBerry.”

The Q10 failed? Harsh. And it would be pretty easy to find BlackBerry users who bought because of the keyboard. Orrick says he will issue a ruling on whether to block Typo sales "promptly".

Unfortunately, the highest or most demanding tiers of a customer base are often the worst judges of an established company's prospects. While Blackberry's business was being disrupted by the iPhone and Android smartphones, their core "enterprise" and "prosumer" markets remained fiercely loyal. Many analysts remained steadfast in their opinion that Blackberry's core customer base would ensure the company's relevance in the years to come.

The problem with the "best" customers is that they provide no information about the dominant basis of competition in the industry, i.e. the mainstream market. Blackberry's core user base always held the opinion that their email/messaging services and hardware keyboard gave the company a sustainable competitive advantage over competitors. Unfortunately, while industry watchers were preoccupied with those features, the basis of competition in the mainstream market shifted to ease of use, availability of apps, full featured browsing, etc.

Tero Kuittinen:
The context here is that Q10, Z10 and Z5 were aimed at what was a 70m strong BlackBerry user base just a few short months ago. The inability of that existing pool of users to absorb more units is the real horror here. It implies sky high defection rates to competing OS camps. Yet BlackBerry has been able to pull rabbits from the hat in some tough periods in the past; opaque emerging market carrier orders sometimes come in stronger than what US analysts project.

If the BB10 units grew from 2.8m in the May quarter to 3.3m or higher in the August quarter, there is a chance that BlackBerry might find a willing buyer. 15% or higher QoQ momentum offers a glimmer of hope, even with the big spring volume disappointment…
BlackBerry could be worth a substantial amount even if it is dismantled and sold piecemeal. But the investor mood about patent portfolios has darkened a fair bit since Google bought Motorola.

“It’s one foot on the banana peel, one foot in the grave,” Marshall told Computerworld Australia this week at the AirWatch Connect conference in Melbourne.

BlackBerry’s latest version of its mobile management software, BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 10, supports Apple and Android devices. However, the company has not allowed multiple-OS MDMs like AirWatch to support BlackBerry devices — a move that has essentially forced businesses to buy BES if they want to securely support BlackBerry.

“By not opening up the APIs a year and a half ago with [BlackBerry] OS 10, it was the beginning of the end,” he said.

AirWatch is a (highly rated) rival to BlackBerry in MDM, but his point is a strong one: it means enterprises using AirWatch wouldn't buy BB10 phones. (Via @mbrit on Twitter.)

The trigger I was using for this point of no return when the vendor began making losses.

The list at the time consisted of 13 phone vendors who either merged, were liquidated or acquired after this trigger point was reached. There were no examples of vendors who recovered. Since then two more vendors reached the threshold (Nokia and RIM) and a third will do so this quarter (HTC). One vendor (LG) may be recovering but Nokia has just been acquired and RIM has put itself up for sale. Some Japanese vendors like Panasonic have also called it quits since then. So the score so far is about 18 triggers, 15 exits and three pending.

Reneging on a promise made in January, BlackBerry has just announced that it will not, in fact, be upgrading the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to its latest mobile OS, BlackBerry 10. CEO Thorsten Heins revealed the sour news on the company's investor call relating to today's earnings report, though he didn't delve into the specifics of why the company's plans have changed. The only justification offered by Heins is that BlackBerry was unable to get performance up to a satisfactory level, and the company now intends to focus on core products instead.

BlackBerry has shipped a total of 2.5m PlayBooks since they were introduced in April 2011. Heins has also said that he doesn't see a business model - or eventually need - for tablets as such.

Of course, the underlying problem is that though both platforms are perfectly OK (though with their flaws), they're radically sub-scale. iOS now has about 400m active devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, though obviously with overlapping users) and Android over 800m, plus China. Lumia and BB10 combined have sold a little over 23m units in the last 18 months. As a developer, why would you target these?

If tablets are going to be replaced by some modular computing doodad or doodads, surely [BlackBerry CEO Thorsten] Heins would like to be the one to tell everyone how it would be done?

But there isn't any leadership from Heins in this direction.

Windows Phone isn’t really posing a threat to iOS or Android, which continue to dominate smartphone share is all markets, but it is starting to pull away from BlackBerry and Symbian when it comes to making a strong showing as a third place contender. In the US, Windows accounted for 4.1% of smartphone sales in the three-month period ending February 2013, up from 2.7% for the year-ago quarter. BlackBerry, by contrast, represented only 0.7% of smartphone sales in the US according to Kantar, down from 3.6% during the same time in 2012.

In the UK, BlackBerry slid from 16.8% of all smartphone sales in the three-month period ending in February last year, to just 5.1% of sales for the same span in 2013. That’s a drop of 11.7 percentage points, during a period that included a full month of BB10 device sales. BlackBerry itself claimed 1 million devices shipped for its most recent fiscal quarter, which included BB10 launches in Canada and the UK, but when pressed about how much of that represented actual sales, execs hedged and noted that it was “sort of” closer to between two-thirds and three-quarters of that 1 million figure on its investor conference call.

Note that this is share - of phones shipped - and not installed base. Windows Phone has now overtaken BlackBerry in both the UK and US for shipments. (Thanks @modelportfolio2003 for the link.)

Speaking exclusively to The Australian Financial Review, ahead of the local launch of its make-or-break smartphones, Mr Heins said last week’s launch of the Samsung S4, along with a wave of recent smartphone releases had reeled in the lead Apple used to hold in the market.

He said BlackBerry was making early strides in encouraging users to switch from other mobile platforms to its own, that a follow up to its commercially unsuccessful PlayBook tablet was a long way off and that developers of big name apps like Instagram and Netflix were being won over by the reaction to its new BlackBerry 10 (BB10) operating system.

“Apple did a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market ... They did a fantastic job with the user interface, they are a design icon. There is a reason why they were so successful, and we actually have to admit this and respect that,” Mr Heins said.

“History repeats itself again I guess ... the rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don’t innovate at that speed you can be replaced pretty quickly. The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about is now five years old.”

Mr Heins said one area that the new BlackBerry phones had surpassed the iPhone was in the ability to multi-task - running multiple apps at once - meaning that users could work in the same fashion on their smartphone as they liked to on a laptop.

We feel fairly sure that the iPhone interface is six years old, at least in its public incarnation.

The one-page policy memo from Public Safety Canada, updated in mid-January, attempts to dissuade government BlackBerry users from sending a PIN-to-PIN message largely because it could be read by any BlackBerry user, anywhere in the world. The messages are “the most vulnerable method of communicating on a BlackBerry,” a Public Safety Canada presentation says…

Political staffers use the device as well, regularly sending PIN-to-PIN messages and emails as government business has progressively migrated to mobile devices.

“Although PIN-to-PIN messages are encrypted, they key used is a global cryptographic ‘key’ that is common to every BlackBerry device all over the world,” the memo reads. “Any BlackBerry device can potentially decrypt all PIN-to-PIN messages sent by any other BlackBerry device.”

Rob Enderle:
As we look ahead to 2013, it's becoming increasingly clear that the new year provides an unprecedented opportunity for Research in Motion to make a huge comeback.

This is largely because the market is dominated by two platforms: Android, which is seen as an unsecure malware magnet, and iOS, which comes from a firm that has never learned to spell "IT." In fact, Apple's biggest failures were Lisa and the Apple Server, both created on Steve Jobs' watch (Lisa was even his product, initially) and both targeted at the IT market.

While phones and tablets are largely a consumer play, they are increasingly being used for business. Even in a BYOD world, IT still has a great deal of say about the hardware connected to its networks and services. As we start 2013, and as RIM brings out its next-generation products, the company will stand alone as the only mobile solutions provider focused on IT first and the needs of users later.

Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins, who will introduce the BlackBerry 10 operating system next month, told analysts on a Dec. 20 conference call that RIM faces pressure to reduce fees to “stay relevant in our markets.” The Waterloo, Ontario-based company dropped the most in more than four years on Dec. 21 in Toronto.
