This new wave of fan interaction nods to the importance of online security, then asks fans to break the rules. Mr. Johnson accompanied his call for passwords with the disclaimer, “only me tho, don’t ever give out ur passwords to strangers.”

We like to think that language is a reflection of underlying truth, and so if a word embedding (or whatever) is extracted from language, then it reflects some underlying truth about the world. The problem is that even in the simplest cases, this is super false.

The "black sheep problem" is that if you were to try to guess what color most sheep were by looking and language data, it would be very difficult for you to conclude that they weren't almost all black. In English, "black sheep" outnumbers "white sheep" about 25:1 (many "black sheep"s are movie references); in French it's 3:1; in German it's 12:1. Some languages get it right; in Korean it's 1:1.5 in favor of white sheep.

You still get design that exploits your non-rational psychological biases in ways that work against you. You still get the flypaper even if you don’t get the swatter. That support and those defenses don’t just happen, and they are not limited to the individual’s choices. They are provided by social structure, and that structure is disproportionately provided by the professor, especially during the first weeks of class.

StatusQuo is a new programming system for developing database applications using the Java language. It uses program analysis techniques to do two things:

Identify parts of the program that operate on database result sets and convert them into SQL. For example, our system converts a nested loop on a Java ResultSet into equivalent SQL to allow the database pick the best join algorithm.
Move blocks of code into the database as stored procedures, to reduce the number of network round trips and move code closer to data.

StatusQuo maintains the status quo, because it the programmer doesn't need to modify his or her code at all. Programmers write applications in Java as they always have, and StatusQuo optimizes the application during compile and execution time. There is no need to install any custom database or app server.

BayesDB, a Bayesian database table, lets users query the probable implications of their data as easily as a SQL database lets them query the data itself. Using the built-in Bayesian Query Language (BQL), users with no statistics training can solve basic data science problems, such as detecting predictive relationships between variables, inferring missing values, simulating probable observations, and identifying statistically similar database entries.

BayesDB is suitable for analyzing complex, heterogeneous data tables with up to tens of thousands of rows and hundreds of variables. No preprocessing or parameter adjustment is required, though experts can override BayesDB's default assumptions when appropriate.

BayesDB's inferences are based in part on CrossCat, a new, nonparametric Bayesian machine learning method, that automatically estimates the full joint distribution behind arbitrary data tables.

The recent revelations by the whistleblower Edward Snowden were fascinating. But they - and all the reactions to them - had one enormous assumption at their heart.

That the spies know what they are doing.

It is a belief that has been central to much of the journalism about spying and spies over the past fifty years. That the anonymous figures in the intelligence world have a dark omniscience. That they know what's going on in ways that we don't.

It doesn't matter whether you hate the spies and believe they are corroding democracy, or if you think they are the noble guardians of the state. In both cases the assumption is that the secret agents know more than we do.

But the strange fact is that often when you look into the history of spies what you discover is something very different.

It is not the story of men and women who have a better and deeper understanding of the world than we do. In fact in many cases it is the story of weirdos who have created a completely mad version of the world that they then impose on the rest of us.

WikiTrust is hosted by the Institute for Scalable Scientific Data Management at the School of Engineering of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

To use WikiTrust, you need to install a Firefox add-on, and then visit one of the Wikipedias on which it is active (currently, the the English, French, German, or Polish Wikipedias). You will see a WikiTrust tab. If you click on it, you will see the text of the Wikipedia, colored according to the degree with which it has been revised by high-reputation authors:

High reputation text, revised by many high-reputation colors, will appear over a white background.
Low-reputation text, which has not benefitted yet from revision by multiple, high-reputation users, is displayed over an orange background: the more intense the orange, the lower the reputation of text.

In this way, WikiTrust will help you spot recent, unrevised changes to Wikipedia pages. Furthermore, if you ALT-click on a word, you will be taken to the diff where that word (in that context) was first introduced in the article: this enables you to trace the text back to its authors.
