Gerrymandering is the drawing of political districts to gain advantage beyond what would accrue by natural patterns of population. Gerrymandering can benefit an individual legislator or a whole political party. This site is principally concerned with partisan gerrymandering, the establishment of an overall advantage across an entire state.

Partisan gerrymandering is considered justiciable by the United States Supreme Court, but a nationwide standard has not been established. Below are online calculators for simple statistical tests described in "Three Tests for Practical Evaluation of Partisan Gerrymandering," by Samuel S.-H. Wang, 68 Stanford Law Review 1263 (2016). This approach was awarded a prize in Common Cause's 2016 First Amendment Gerrymander Standard Writing Competition.

One of the most common scenarios when asking strangers for directions is their habit of pulling out a smart phone to start typing in an address, after which he insists on leaving with a drawn map on whatever written surface is available: torn sheets of notebook paper, napkins, or even paper plates. Aozaki tells Spoon & Tamago that his goal is not to make a complete map, but to instead document his daily routine and his myriad interactions with people, sort of like a mapped diary. New Mexico small areas were based on population size, not land area. Most (95%) of the New Mexico small areas range in population size from 9,000 to 30,000 persons. Some counties have multiple small areas (Bernalillo County has 34 small areas within its boundaries). In other cases, whole counties (e.g., Harding, Quay and De Baca Counties) were combined to create a single small area.

She ends up arguing for a distinction "...there is the map whose meaning lies in the human experience of being-in-place" - the reference map. "...its meaning can be considered cognitively less complex." Compare to "the map whose meaning is experienced as knowing-about-space..." the thematic map. It is used to identify locations on the earth, but differs from the traditional method of latitude and longitude in several respects.
The UTM system is not a single map projection. The system instead employs a series of sixty zones, each of which is based on a specifically defined secant transverse Mercator projection.
The Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s.[1] The system was based on an ellipsoidal model of the Earth. For areas within the conterminous United States, the Clarke 1866 ellipsoid was used. For the remaining areas of the Earth, including Hawaii, the International Ellipsoid was used. Currently, the WGS84 ellipsoid is used as the underlying model of the Earth in the UTM coordinate system."
