Introducing the Winter Soldier: The creation of a truly terrifying Marvel villain | Cinesnark

Shit, bro, this was so good for me.

Besides the strength of Stan’s performance, there are a lot of good decisions going into how the Winter Soldier appears on screen. He’s never in a hurry—we only see him running once in the entire film. Instead, Stan moves with measured precision and in a couple places, notably the highway ambush and the attack on the Triskelion at the end, the scenes cut between Captain America frantically running from point A to B while the Winter Soldier casually strolls to his destination, stopping only to kick people into jet engines. That contrast is subtle but it makes the Winter Soldier seem more in control—he’s already there while everyone else scrambles to catch up.
...
The framing of the Winter Soldier is very deliberate throughout the film. He’s never revealed straight on in full frame. Instead he comes in at angles or is glimpsed through fire and smoke—our first-ever look at him is as a distant, shadowy blur. The effect is unsettling—you never know where he is or where he’s coming from, which unnerves the audience as much as it does the heroes. And he is always preceded by violence. He doesn’t show up and then start shit—shit is already started by the time he emerges. Violence is a harbinger for /him/; he is not a harbinger of violence. It’s a subtle difference but it serves to highlight that he is not the product of violence but its cause, once again emphasizing his control over the action on screen.

The Winter Soldier understands the difference between a morally compromised character and morally compromising a character. Cap’s whole world from Bucky to SHIELD to his past so-called heroic deeds have all been corrupted, but he himself remains true to the character we’ve come to know both through the comics and his previous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They show us a good man who remains good until the end, no matter what happens to or around him. That’s where The Winter Soldier derives its conflict, from a character of black and white morality trying to live in our shades-of-grey reality. The theme of The Winter Soldier in short: Let’s crank the moral ambiguity to eleven and see how Cap handles it. They essentially create a situation in which Cap HAS to cling to his moral code because it’s quite literally all he has left in a world he doesn’t especially want to live in anymore.

It feels like watching someone’s homemade tai chi highlight reel, if tai chi could be somehow racist. The script appears to have been run through Google Translate and back a few hundred times. Here are some words that M. Night Shyamalan actually wrote down on a piece of paper for actual professional actors to say with their actual mouths: “This time we show the fire nation that we believe in our beliefs as much as they believe in theirs.” “Wake up, young man. I am Commander Zhao. I set this trap for you.” “It’s led by a princess, because her father died.” “Bring me ALL YOUR ELDERLY.” “Again, I offer my condolences on your nephew burning to death in that terrible accident.”

Shyamalan, I offer my condolences on your career burning to death in this terrible accident.
