There’s a place for subtlety in art, but there’s also a place for distilled simplicity. And the more I think about Promare the more I feel a burning need to shout from the rooftops about the sheer elegance and power of the visual symbolism of shapes. Triangles — the burnish flames, sparks, broken glass, Lio’s earring, the sharp edges of Lio’s Mad Burnish suit, the triangle mosaics on Lio’s burnish sword, triangular ash floating upward in the triangular firelight, the triangular peaks of a volcano looming. Rectangles — lawns and buildings and city blocks of Promepolis, blocks of ice, the barrel of a freezing gun, cubical elevators, cubical cells, cubical restraints, tiled rectangles of windows and doors, rectangular barriers. The moment I knew I was watching a masterpiece was when I noticed that even the lens flare effects of the sunlight in the rectangular city of Promepolis are rectangular. This is not a world in balance.

On a Sunbeam has often been described as science fiction, but it’s closer to scientific fantasy, or what Ursula Le Guin memorably described, in a conversation with Margaret Atwood, as “fantasies, with spaceships.” It is perhaps the closest to a moody space opera, a cosmic spelunking into the self. Walden has little interest here in the rules of the cosmos; people walk, with hardly a concern, onto new planets without worrying about differing atmospheres or gravitational strengths. Instead, space functions here as an emotional plane. “I love having characters go through challenges, then learn to live with them, and let their desires grow and change,” she told Yu. “Space was the right place for this kind of dynamic simply because it’s so vast and mysterious. Space isn’t simple, it’s endless—like the way our need to be loved is endless.” Yes, indeed.

(I didn't assume I was poisoned, b/c I'm not Tony Stark, but I did think for a minute or two that I must've eaten something bad/wrong.) I also loved his exchange with the kid: "Should you be on medication?" "Probably." "Do you have PTSD?" Something about the way that he begins to acknowledge it for what it is, and he doesn't have a total denial meltdown about that is ... just so great.

Shit, bro, this was so good for me.

Besides the strength of Stan’s performance, there are a lot of good decisions going into how the Winter Soldier appears on screen. He’s never in a hurry—we only see him running once in the entire film. Instead, Stan moves with measured precision and in a couple places, notably the highway ambush and the attack on the Triskelion at the end, the scenes cut between Captain America frantically running from point A to B while the Winter Soldier casually strolls to his destination, stopping only to kick people into jet engines. That contrast is subtle but it makes the Winter Soldier seem more in control—he’s already there while everyone else scrambles to catch up.
...
The framing of the Winter Soldier is very deliberate throughout the film. He’s never revealed straight on in full frame. Instead he comes in at angles or is glimpsed through fire and smoke—our first-ever look at him is as a distant, shadowy blur. The effect is unsettling—you never know where he is or where he’s coming from, which unnerves the audience as much as it does the heroes. And he is always preceded by violence. He doesn’t show up and then start shit—shit is already started by the time he emerges. Violence is a harbinger for /him/; he is not a harbinger of violence. It’s a subtle difference but it serves to highlight that he is not the product of violence but its cause, once again emphasizing his control over the action on screen.

The Winter Soldier understands the difference between a morally compromised character and morally compromising a character. Cap’s whole world from Bucky to SHIELD to his past so-called heroic deeds have all been corrupted, but he himself remains true to the character we’ve come to know both through the comics and his previous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They show us a good man who remains good until the end, no matter what happens to or around him. That’s where The Winter Soldier derives its conflict, from a character of black and white morality trying to live in our shades-of-grey reality. The theme of The Winter Soldier in short: Let’s crank the moral ambiguity to eleven and see how Cap handles it. They essentially create a situation in which Cap HAS to cling to his moral code because it’s quite literally all he has left in a world he doesn’t especially want to live in anymore.

Because "soldiers trust each other" isn't just something Steve says because it helps unit cohesion: it's part of what makes Steve a good person. He's not stupid, and he's not naive, but he does trust people, even when he doesn't know if his trust is well-placed. Steve telling Natasha that he trusts her is one of the key moments between them, and is about him seeing that she's got her own set of principles that she follows, even if they're not the same as his. Steve's big speech on the helicarrier is about trust: about giving the Shield agents all the information he has, and trusting them to take the right action. It's about trusting that one terrified agent, the one with his finger on the button: trusting him to make the right decision. Steve throws himself off of high places and he trusts that he's going to land soft: this is not because he's never landed hard, but because he needs to trust in order to be able to function in the world and make it better. In this context, Steve's trust is what drives the whistleblowing/anti-surveillance plot at the end: Natasha is going to give the information to the world, rather than treating human beings like stupid, naive cattle. She trusts people to make rational decisions based on that information, rather than keeping it from them "for their own good" or "in order to avoid mass panic" or whatever the usual superhero reasons are. Natasha Romanov, that one guy with his finger on the button, every citizen on Earth: Steve Rogers gives his trust to all of them.

Steve and Nick are together at the beginning of the film, arguing; Steve tells Nick that he needs to trust, and Nick tells Steve that he has to get with the program, and Steve's response does for both of them: "Don't hold your breath." But at the end of the film, they both have to decide whether to trust, or whether to strike out in anger and fear. Steve's test is with Bucky, and it absolutely breaks my heart, because it's clear that Steve is willing and able to kill Bucky if he has to, to save millions of lives. He'll do it if he has no other choice. But as soon as his obligation is fulfilled, as soon as he's got the microchip doing whatever, Steve refuses to fight. Steve is both the good soldier who does his duty and sacrifices himself – sacrifices his best friend – and the conscientious objector, who lies passively and refuses to fight, because once it's his choice, he can't bear to kill Bucky. He trusts Bucky instead, and his trust saves Bucky just as it saves everyone else. Steve doesn't force you to do what he wants: he asks you to make the right choice, and is willing to die to give you that choice.

Brilliant.

And it's worth it to point out the absence of heteronormativity, as well as the existence of homosexuality, in Night Vale: think of how many unmarried women are on this show. Perhaps the main character after Cecil is Old Woman Josie, whose spinsterness/widowedness is prototypically queer: women who exceed heterosexuality have a queerness to them, a failure to conform to gendered expectations.

And it's worth it to note the function of children in Night Vale: not precious treasures produced by heteronormative families, ciphers to be protected at all costs, but rather capable, intelligent people whose lives are interesting and important, and who are perfectly capable of defending themselves with guns, or with books, against libertarian street artist feral dogs or librarians. Children exceed the role they're supposed to fulfill within a heteronormative nuclear family (pure, innocent, susceptible to threat and danger, in need of protection) and, like the unmarried women, make their own stories without the need for fathers (or even mothers). Children are often separated from the familial unit (and sometimes are strange silent messenger creatures, even) - heteronormativity doesn't work in Night Vale.

And it's worth it to note the queerness of bodies in Night Vale, of course: Coach Al Mujaheed pulling his tongue from his body, Michael Sandero's extra head, the recipe for cooking your own heart. The way bodies aren't whole, complete, impenetrable fortresses of consciousness, but broken apart and strange and capable of strange pleasures (do you get . . . sexually aroused from carpal tunnel syndrome?). This is a classic horror trope, body horror, in which we are forced to realize the squishy or gross or bizarre things inside us, but Night Vale does it with such fondness and fascination and eerie delight that it reminds me of guro kink a lot, exploring that shivery place where the strange penetration of the world into your body, or the strange excess of your own body, becomes sexual or sensual.

So, Night Vale has those queernesses built into it.

You can talk about how Tolkein borrows heavily from folktales and mythology and how LotR bears some strong similarities to Wagner’s Ring Cycle operas. And you can posit that Tolkein was an exploratory writer who basically wanted to do worldbuilding and language creation and poetry all damn day, and how sometimes it seems like the books he’s most known for (The Hobbit, the LotR trilogy) are essentially declarative excuses for him to spend the rest of his time exploring (the appendices, the Silmarillion, his ‘unpublished tales,’ etc).

You can talk about the profound and silly nature of Pratchett’s Discworld as an exploration of both established genre tropes and the inherent absurdity of existence without handwaving about ‘genre’ and ‘pastiche’ nor somehow implying that it should be inferior because of its exploratory nature but somehow isn’t, like it’s a literary platypus.

Since the earliest days of Usenet, fandom has wandered the Internet, finding remarkable ways to assemble websites, plug-ins, and online forums into tools for sharing and organizing erotic fiction. Often ostracized and ridiculed for their hobby, this community of rather gentle people has learned to work with the materials at hand, building for themselves what they could not get from others, in the process creating a culture of collaboration and mutual respect other online projects can only envy.

Fans are inveterate classifiers, and the story of how they have bent websites to their will (in a process reminiscent of their favorite works) may change the way you think about online communities, or at the very least, about librarians.

Covalency and Affinity: An Essay on Pairing Popularity - Saucery - Meta - Fandom [Archive of Our Own]

Why do some ships become so much more popular than others?

My one-sentence theory is: some ships fit into neat binary grooves in our minds. (Derrida-style.) Those ships are the most popular.

To elaborate, each person in the pairing is an archetypal balancing factor for the other. Take the most popular ship of all, Kirk/Spock. Kirk = Instinct. Spock = Logic. That's a binary pairing, right there. It's what Lacan would call a "dual-entry matrix". Basically, it's a psychological impetus, not only for the characters but for the shippers; there's gotta be binary action going on, there. Something to deconstruct.

When it comes to fannish shipping, deconstruction means making two seemingly "opposite" personalities discover compatibility. (Harmony.) Or, in lay terms, some kinda yin-yang love-fu. For example: Fraser (Discipline)/Kowalski (Brashness). Or Stiles (Empathy;Randomness)/Derek (Menace;Focus). Or Eames (Fluidity)/Arthur (Solidity). Or Loki (Deceit)/Thor (Honor). Or Steve (Responsibility;Prudishness)/Tony (Irreverence;Promiscuity).

See, it's about chemistry. What does chemistry mean? Incompleteness. True chemistry has to be about give-and-take. Both characters have to lack something that is present in the other. And those qualities must react to each other. Like, uh, covalent bonds. Or elective affinities. #NERDMOMENT But seriously. There has to be a mutual spark.

"Perhaps most unusual of all, Criss writes and performs songs from a female point of view even outside of the Blaine character. Criss composed the song “The Coolest Girl,” for the character of Hermione in a musical adaptation of Harry Potter. In concert, he often performs the song, asking the largely female audience to join in, since “I am not a girl, although I try to be sometimes.”

Just as Colfer provides a model for queer kids who have not yet been represented, so Criss provides an equally significant alternative model for queer straightness. Both performers, through Glee and beyond it, give voice to radically fluid adolescent masculinities that do indeed offer their audiences new ways to dream."

And deeply insecure. And struggling with the consequences of talent and attention. And maybe it’s the blazer and my sense that I can understand the world of his part of the show more than I can understand the world of the other parts of the show .... But he knows he’s lucky. And he just grabs for things. It’s all there in “Raise Your Glass,” which is his victory moment after doing something he adores (singing) with someone he adores (Kurt, who is complex and remarkable in his own right). It’s glorious.

Most of us don’t get victory moments like Blaine’s on that stage. Not in front of a cheering crowd, not spurring every one of your friends on to more joy and awesomeness. But somehow we get let into that moment in “Original Song,” and it’s startling. It’s why musicals matter. Hell, it’s why music matters."

"Giving Kurt a “hero’s journey” on Glee was always going to be a daring choice, because he’s a gay kid and because he performs gay in the particular way he does. But to take a gay kid who the world too easily wants to read as weak and make him a magician — that is, someone with the power to change others and bend reality to his will — is a truly risky and starling choice. It makes Kurt powerful, threatening, and seductive. It normalizes his gender presentation through function (because in a dichotomous system magicianship requires a union of the genders and an ability to step outside that union); and it confronts, side-steps and perhaps even embodies Glee‘s awkward preoccupation with the “predatory gay” stereotype, with a sort of enviable power.

Kurt, like most of Glee‘s main characters, has another year in Lima, but his season two arc shows us that he’s already gotten out."

I haven't experienced this level of cognitive dissonance about a show in ever, really. I mean I've watched dumb shows, and I've watched utterly compelling shows, but I've never watched a show that managed to be this level of both at once. It's frankly baffling to me. ...not that Edward and Jacob and co would ever dream of jumping around singing and dancing with muppets, obviously - they're all far too cool for school and much too emo, as far as I can gather. But that whole adolescent fervour for a fabulous, otherworldly romance between a girl on the cusp of womanhood and the Really Quite Unsuitable powerful-and-sparkly older man with way too much hair product, who's all sexy and intense and kind of a powerful bad boy but totally undone by her? Yeah, okay, guilty as charged for fangirling the living shit out of that dynamic between Jareth and Sarah.

Only LABYRINTH IS A GAZILLION TIMES BETTER, obviously, because..." AND THEN PROCEEDS ONE OF THE AWESOMEST LISTS TO EVER AWESOME UP LABYRINTH EVER.

SERIOUSLY, INCEPTION FANDOM, THIS IS HOW TOTEMS WORK. MAKE THIS GENERAL FANON KNOWLEDGE ALREADY: "So this is how totems work: if Arthur were to roll his weighted die in Yusuf's city dream, the laws of physics would work as Yusuf subconsciously expects, based on experience - the actual weight of the die does not bias its roll, because Yusuf doesn't know the die is weighted and thus rigged. Hence he has a 1/6th chance of getting any number, and knows this is a dream.

Based on that, I'd argue most totems seem to be based on this kind of physical principle - the weight of Ariadne's bishop (any chess player knows how *terribly* those little buggers roll when you drop them, they don't stay there)."
