In highschool, I wrote a recursive mail rule that sent a friend of mine millions of messages as a joke. I (accidentally!) repeatedly crashed the school’s mail server6

The adults in my life7 were largely not mad at me. They asked me to knock it off, but also made me a t-shirt. I don’t think I’d be doing what I do now without the encouragement that I received then.

What this discord did was so cool - so surprising - so creative. It reminded me of me - except they were 10 times the developer I was then (and frankly, better developers than I am now). Getting to watch it live - getting to provide some encouragement, to see what they were doing and respond with praise and pride instead of anger - was deeply meaningful to me. I still tear up when I think about it.

I’m proud to have made something that this discord decided was worth playing with, and I’m even more proud of what they did with it.

They’ve lost the thread for it, instead they are becoming rapidly more comfortable being the gatekeeper, the toll booth worker, and not the company that I joined that saw an open , vital web as the one that a company like Google could flourish in. I would assert that lacking the passion for that fight, they will surely, and pretty simply, lose it and become another fading former star of computer science chasing marginal enterprise revenue.

Is it too late for Google? I really hope not. I truly hope my former employer can find themselves, that they can fight for the open web and crawl the walled gardens as if their future depends on it. Because, well, it does.

As actionable triggers accessible via physical mediums, e.g. scannable QR codes or IoT device buttons.
And more!
When I reflect on examples of great URL design[1] I’ve encountered through the years — URLs that, when I saw them, I paused and thought “Wow, that’s really neat!” — these are a few that come to mind.

We think it is a compelling and tantalizing read as a way to not only relive the transformative years of online travel and e-commerce but also to take away lessons that have relevance today.

This oral history of the early years of online travel is extensive but not all-inclusive. There are big-name companies we didn't contact or a handful that declined to participate. As goes with the territory in the oral history that follows, we couldn't or didn't try to corroborate every fact or incident and sometimes 20-plus years after the fact, the people interviewed get hazy about the precise years things occurred and tell different versions of the same events. Some of the personalities, too, worry that they don't speak as neatly and grammatically off-the-cuff as they might write so take that into account if you come across run-on sentences or inarticulate phrasing.

There is a sweet spot of React: in moderately interactive interfaces. Complex forms that require immediate feedback, UIs that need to move around and react instantly. That’s where it excels. I helped build the editors in Mapbox Studio and Observable and for the most part, React was a great choice.

But there’s a lot on either side of that sweet spot.

The high performance parts aren’t React. Mapbox GL, for example, is vanilla JavaScript and probably should be forever. The level of abstraction that React works on is too high, and the cost of using React - in payload, parse time, and so on - is too much for any company to include it as part of an SDK. Same with the Observable runtime, the juicy center of that product: it’s very performance-intensive and would barely benefit from a port.

The less interactive parts don’t benefit much from React. Listing pages, static pages, blogs - these things are increasingly built in React, but the benefits they accrue are extremely narrow. A lot of the optimizations we’re deploying to speed up these things, things like bundle splitting, server-side rendering, and prerendering, are triangulating what we had before the rise of React.

When the browser begins parsing a page, it begins reading the bytes of the HTTP response body. If the response’s Content-Type header specifies a charset attribute, those body bytes can immediately be interpreted as text using the specified character encoding. However, if a charset declaration is not present, the browser must begin scanning the bytes of the response body, checking for a Unicode Byte-Order-Marker at the top or scanning for a META HTTP-EQUIV element that specifies the charset. When such a declaration is reached, the parser may need to restart in order to ensure that the bytes previously read were interpreted properly.

"What’s a scrAPI? A scrAPI, which at this point is more of an idea than a thing, was recently described by Thor Muller in his blog as a type of community-built API that provides a programming layer above web sites that don’t otherwise have an API. This intermediate layer, which exists independently of the destination web site, in turn does the dirty work of screen-scraping of raw HTML from the source and returns just the relevant data in some cleaner XML format. Thus a collaboratively built and maintained set of code for data access from any source.

It’s an interesting idea. Many complications of course. Not the least of which is that many companies object to scraping, be it for reasons of load, stability, or copyright. Good example being Craigslist vs. Oodle.

In this follow-up post Thor notes that the original coiner of the term was Paul Bausch back in 2002. Which in turn was in reference to scraping Amazon data. And interestingly, it was just this sort of scraping that was a key driver in leading Amazon to subsequently build a real API: people are going to do it anyway, let’s formalize and leverage it."

"1. When to make a faceted classification

Kwasnick (1999) identifies four classificatory structures: hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and facets. When one of the first three works, use it. If some other organizing principle, such as a timeline or ordering by size, works, use it. The design of the classification must follow its purpose, and different things can be classified in different ways for different purposes, requiring different structures. If the others are insufficient, look to facets.

1.1 When not to make a faceted classification

Hierarchies and trees (imagine indented lists) are best when the entities in question are viewed in such a way that they have one dimension of classification. Hierarchies divide and redivide things into groups where each new group is a sub-species of its parent group; everything that is true of a group is also true of its sub-groups and so on down (Kwasnick 1999, 25). The Linnean taxonomy of living things is the classic example of this. Trees, in contrast, do not have the rules of inheritance (Kwasnick 1999, 30). For example, North America contains Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and Canada contains ten provinces and three territories, but Ontario is not a kind of Canada, and Canada is not a kind of North America.

A paradigm is a two-dimensional classification (imagine a spreadsheet). Use paradigms when there are two independent aspects to consider. Kwasnick (1999, 35-36) uses the example of terms describing kinship relations, which can be organized into a grid, with sex (male/female) along one axis, and relation (parent, sibling, parent's sibling) along the other axis. Comparing English and Polish terms for the various relations shows that "cousin" covers four different Polish terms, which do not ignore the sex of the cousin or which side of the family they are on."

"Web application security is an essential component of any successful project, whether open source PHP applications, web services such as straight through processing, or proprietary business web sites. Hosters (rightly) shun insecure code, and users shun insecure services that lead to fraud. The aim of this Development Guide is to allow businesses, developers, designers and solution architects to produce secure web applications. If done from the earliest stages, secure applications cost about the same to develop as insecure applications, but are far more cost effective in the long run.
Unlike other forms of security (such as firewalls and secure lockdowns), web applications have the ability to make a skilled attacker rich, or make the life of a victim a complete misery. At this highest level of the OSI software map, traditional firewalls and other controls simply do not help. The application itself must be self-defending. The Development Guide can help you get there. The Development Guide has been written to cover all forms of web application security issues, from old hoary chestnuts such as SQL Injection, through modern concerns such as AJAX, phishing, credit card handling, session fixation, cross-site request forgeries, compliance, and privacy issues."

And we were right.

But we've also learned that while web APIs enable us to tap into a wealth of data, they can only be relied upon in the short term. The expiration date of software we create has been shortened due to the whims of those who create the web APIs we rely on.

"Our approach to embracing APIs is to provide a consistent interaction model. Mule Cloud Connect provides such a model. APIs are represented as simple objects with meta-data configured using annotations that handle the URI scheme, authentication, signing, hashing, session management and even streaming.
These Cloud Connectors can then be orchestrated in flows to allow you to do things like filter social media data to send updates to your phone, provide automated voice access to your billing account or back up your CRM data to a database.
Of course you need a place to run these flows. Mule iON is an integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) which allows developers to compose API functionality and publish the results to their own applications. Mule iON acts as the integration layer to your application, removing the integration logic from the application code."
