URI Templates are a popular standard that allows clients to construct a URI according to the server's instructions, rather than following a hyperlink, or implementing manually-written directions in the documentation.

Wouldn't it be useful if you could use these same URI templates to handle incoming HTTP requests? I will show how to reverse this process, so that when a request is received, the URI can be routed to a matching URI Template, from among all of the ones used in the API; recovering the values used to fill in the variables.

I'll show applications for this technique, including a router that reads directly from an OpenAPI description, and detecting overlapping or ambiguous routes.

And I will show the basis in Automata Theory, starting by modeling URI Templates as a regular grammar, then taking the union of all of the URI Templates in use to produce a deterministic finite state machine to find the ones that match (in constant time, with respect to the size of the routing table!).

Finally, I'll discuss implications for various API description standards, including how to support nearly the full range of URI Template operators, and what it should mean when there's overlapping routes.

Sitting in cafe, my mind wandered from the theoretical stuff I was learning during an MSc, and I had the idea to create a large display from seven-segment displays.

Electronics was a hobby, but I had no idea where to begin, and after a bit of research I saw that Skot Coshere had pretty much done exactly what I was thinking. Kudos to him, he did a great job.

A couple of years later, I made a small (12 x 3 digit) attempt at a display. It was a breadboard prototype and the reality was that I just wasn’t capable of making something bigger.

Fast forward about five years (Jan 2020) and for some reason, I found myself looking at some cheap LED drivers on eBay, the drivers that Skot had used in his project. They seemed perfect for the job and I went ahead and bought a load.

After a beer with a friend and then a chat with a curator, my idea was accepted for an exhibition which was 6 weeks away, I had the deadline I needed and an excuse to not just work on client projects! (The exhibition never happened because of Covid-19)

"Like everyone lately, [Matt] has been spending more time doing video conferencing lately. The problem is you naturally want to look at the screen, but that means you aren’t looking at the camera and, thus, you aren’t making eye contact. If you use a laptop, there is a relatively easy fix, although it isn’t particularly stylish. [Matt] built a black shroud out of foam board and put in two-way mirror. How does that help? Well, with the set up, you can put a very thin black web camera pointing up towards the mirror. Because the shroud is dark, you can see the screen through the mirror, but the camera sees you.

Where do you get a thin black web camera? You make one from an old laptop camera. They are tiny and easy to repurpose, a trick [Matt] has shared before. As a bonus, the post shows an easy way to take an LED strip and make a diffused light for lighting up your webcam call."

Television Delivers People - Wikipedia

elevision Delivers People is a 1973 short video made by video artist Richard Serra and Carlota Fay Schoolman. Running just short of 7 minutes in English, it is a single channel video art piece. The two artists bought some airtime to broadcast the piece to the public in 1973. To the soundtrack of canned, conventional elevator music, electronically generated text scrolls over the screen in yellow font with a blue background. This format of text and the successful use of minimal video technology gives the feel of a "spare low-budget appearance, as if it were an information bulletin, or a pre-programme transmission on a community TV channel or cable network. Because of this minimal 'look', the tape clearly originates from 'outside' the broadcast TV environment, therefore deconstructing not so much the form of television programming but rather the broadcasting's overall strategy".[1]

The text of this piece of video art is a critique of mass media and pop culture as a control tactic and social construct. Video Data Bank's bio on the video explains how the work shows the mass media's assertion of itself onto mass culture through things called 'entertainments' for the benefit of the mass corporations and those in power.[2] "You are the product of t.v." it declares, "you are delivered to the advertiser who is the customer. He consumes you". The text asserts that the corporations behind television broadcasting are manipulative forces working to maintain the status quo, from which they gain power and profit from. The text goes on to delve into how the public viewer is shaped and formed by corporations and television. It describes the manipulative control and the motivations of the advertisers and corporations that become ingrained in television. The analysis of political and ideological functioning of television directly confronts the viewer of this piece. The film "goes further than simply critiquing broadcast television, extending its scope to target the role of television networks and beyond to the large corporations that control them and the political state they represent".[1]

By using the medium that Schoolman and Serra are inherently critiquing, by "using television, in effect, against itself—(they) employ a characteristic strategy of early, counter-corporate video collectives—a strategy that remains integral to video artists committed to a critical dismantling of the media's political and ideological stranglehold".[2] The video tears apart the masquerade of commercial television, revealing television as "little more than an insidious sponsor for the corporate engines of the world".[2] The use of minimalistic technology and its stark appearance of this short video works to "strip away any pretense of 'entertainment' or even news or documentary, opting for a direct appeal to the mind and emotions of the viewer... The work is effective not simply because of the message conveyed via the text, which through coherent persuasive argument outlines the relationship between television entertainment, news and information, the maintaining of the status-quo and corporate and political control, but also of the direct televisual power of its form".

Watch E. coli bacteria encounter increasing strengths of antibiotics, the medicine that we use to fight infections or infectious diseases. A team led by Harvard Medical School’s Michael Baym set up the video demonstration to observe exactly how bacteria evolve antibiotic resistance. From The Scientist:

For 10 days, the researchers imaged the E. coli every 10 minutes as the microbes expanded across the plate, and saw that the bacteria paused briefly at the boundaries of increasingly stringent antibiotic concentrations until a mutant struck out into the higher-drug territory. By challenging the bacteria with differing doses of antibiotic in the first step of the gradient, the team demonstrated that E. coli evolve higher resistance more quickly if they first encounter an intermediate, rather than a high, concentration of antibiotic…

The scientists were also intrigued to find that many bacteria behind those at the frontier—those that became resistant to antibiotics, but grew more slowly as a result—acquired mutations that further boosted both growth and antibiotic resistance later on. In fact, in a head-to-head race with the bacteria that originally outstripped them, these slow-to-grow bacteria were much more successful by the end of the experiment.
