This has been a problem for so long that most of the worthwhile analysis was written a decade ago, and that’s why the cross-seeding with Instagram and the algorithmic feed (hated by all the power users) matter: when you join, you’re given something you can shape and explore. Hence it's ironic that the number-one feedback from Twitter migrants is “nice app, but can we have a ‘people I follow’ feed next to the algorithmic feed?” when I think the algorithmic feed and screen might be the core of the whole thing.

Many smaller things come out of this. There was a storm in a teacup when Adam Mosseri, the PM, said that they wouldn’t give special treatment to news and politics (where Twitter promoted it), and (correctly) noted that from a business perspective news can be more trouble than it’s worth. But again, Meta isn’t trying to replicate the Twitter that’s all about hallway conversations between journalists and politicians, or VCs and founders. That wil be there (it already is) but Meta is trying to make something that a billion people use for conversations about all sorts of things.

So, with everything going on at Twitter rn, time for a thread about the Trust Thermocline

So: what's a thermocline?

Well large bodies of water are made of layers of differing temperatures. Like a layer cake. The top bit is where all the the waves happen and has a gradually decreasing temperature. Then SUDDENLY there's a point where it gets super-cold.

That suddenly is important. There's reasons for it (Science!) but it's just a good metaphor. Indeed you may also be interested in the "Thermocline of Truth" which a project management term for how things on a RAG board all suddenly go from amber to red.

No JavaScript or ads
All requests go through the backend, client never talks to Twitter
Prevents Twitter from tracking your IP or JavaScript fingerprint
Uses Twitter's unofficial API (no rate limits or developer account required)
Lightweight (for @nim_lang, 60KB vs 784KB from twitter.com)
RSS feeds
Themes
Mobile support (responsive design)
AGPLv3 licensed, no proprietary instances permitted
Nitter's GitHub wiki contains instances and browser extensions maintained by the community.

Why use Nitter?
It's basically impossible to use Twitter without JavaScript enabled. If you try, you're redirected to the legacy mobile version which is awful both functionally and aesthetically. For privacy-minded folks, preventing JavaScript analytics and potential IP-based tracking is important, but apart from using the legacy mobile version and a VPN, it's impossible.

Using an instance of Nitter (hosted on a VPS for example), you can browse Twitter without JavaScript while retaining your privacy. In addition to respecting your privacy, Nitter is on average around 15 times lighter than Twitter, and in some cases serves pages faster.

In the future a simple account system will be added that lets you follow Twitter users, allowing you to have a clean chronological timeline without needing a Twitter account.

"Twitter released some really interesting research last week regarding that sort of annoying widget that pops up when you’re about to cyberbully someone on their app. If you don’t use Twitter and don’t know what I’m talking about, last year, Twitter rolled out a feature that will ask users to reconsider offensive or aggressive tweets before they’re published. I’ve, personally, never encountered it because I love to be nice online.

The findings were published in a study titled, Reconsidering Tweets: Intervening during Tweet Creation Decreases Offensive Content, and it has some fascinating takeaways. Here’s a funky little chart Twitter put together with their results:

(Twitter)
So as you can see, about 70% of the users who received the “nudge,” asking them to be nicer just sent the tweet. And, at the bottom there, about 1% decided to go back and actually become more offensive, which is a funny little quirk of social media UX design. But that middle section up there is where things are really interesting. A little less than 10% of the users who received the warning just didn’t send the tweet at all, which I think we can all agree, is good. One day we can get that number up to 100. And about 10% of users made their tweet less offensive."

"Keller is actually trying to complain about the reemergence of oral psychodynamics in the public sphere rather than about memory falling out of favor. If the latter were the case, his ire would be more about Google; instead, most of his frustration is directed against social media, and mostly Twitter, the most conversational, and thus most oral of these mediums.

Western cultures are thoroughly dominated by literate thinking, but retain some pieces of their orality. What we're seeing in social media, though, is a reemergence *into the public sphere* of many of the oral dynamics that previously functioned outside the broadcast- and newspaper-dominated media world of the 20th century. And that's where Tufekci makes a key observation about the old guard's problems with social media, and why the digerati are so loathe to take their issues seriously.

What we are seeing with social media is the public sphere, hitherto dominated by written culture, has been more opened up to oral psychodynamics. And this is particularly difficult to deal with for intellectuals who rely on their competence with, and dominance of, the written form as hallmark of their place in society."

The Great Online Game is free to play, and it starts simply: by realizing that you’re playing a game. Every tweet is a free lottery ticket. That’s a big unlock.

Anyone can play. You can choose how to play given your resources and skills at the current moment. You can level up fast. Financial and social capital are no longer tied so tightly to where you went, who you know, or what your boss thinks of you. This game has different physics and wormholes through which to jump. As a reminder - when you create (register) an app on developer.twitter.com 102, an individual and unique application identity is generated, represented by a private Consumer Key and Consumer Secret pair that is used as part of the OAuth flow.

It is also possible to generate an Access Token and Access Token Secret inside the Dashboard, which is associated with your app. These two additional private items are used to identify and authenticate your personal developer account to the application, without needing to go through the full Sign-in with Twitter flow. Remember that if you need to authenticate other users to your application, you will need to implement the Sign-in with Twitter process in order to receive Access Tokens and Access Token Secrets so that your application can act on behalf of those additional user accounts.

In order to make API integrations more secure, we will no longer show the Access Token and Access Token Secret on the Dashboard beyond the first time that these values are generated, effective January 21, 2020."

The company says path versioning is widely adopted, easy to implement for developers, and it’s what Twitter already uses in its other APIs. After launch, Twitter plans to make a major version change within its Labs program. Twitter will increment to a new Labs version after it incorporates developer feedback.

As for addressing increasing complexity, Twitter plans to formalize the behavior of its endpoints and adopt a consistent specification format. Twitter will use OpenAPI specifications to define and expose behavior for each new Labs endpoint. Because OpenAPI uses JSON Schema to specify response objects and data types, Twitter will take inspiration from there as well."

Jason Costa: "Opening up an API is a big commitment, one that needs to be managed well over time in order to ensure a healthy and thriving ecosystem. If a company is still in the throes of developing a product strategy and business model, it’s worth waiting to offer a highly accessible, external API. It’s better to understand first where you’re going as a company, and then enable a massive network of partnerships to accelerate your product in that direction, with complementary experiences. If your company is thinking about offering a public API, this post is for your consideration. Let’s take a look at Twitter and Slack to illustrate the ways this can play out."

But most important, it was around this time that a bomb went off in the ecosystem. Bill Gross’ company UberMedia began buying up several third-party Twitter clients: Echofon, UberTwitter, Twidroyd, and was looking to buy Tweetdeck. Had UberMedia successfully bought Tweetdeck, they’d have controlled a significant base of clients: dictating how many users would create and consume Tweets. There was an acute awareness within Twitter of what an existential threat this posed — if UberMedia created a shadow network, siphoned off users, and dropped Twitter out of the equation entirely, it would have been disastrous.

In a sense, this meant that all of the consumer-facing third-party clients and aggregation apps were suddenly competitive — leading to misaligned incentives, and a major tightening of policies. Below is the infamous “API quadrant”, illustrating where it was and wasn’t safe to play.

This was largely the end of Twitter’s API “golden age”. An API is a contract with external developers, and once it’s out there taking it away is like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube: it’s hard. Are there other ways this v1.1 transition could have been managed, like continued unfettered access without user limits but with an ad syndication model for third-party clients? Yes, absolutely — but that’s for another post. Even though only a small subset of developers was actually affected by the v1.1 changes (remember, the ecosystem was huge and there were many different classes of apps), the impact of v1.1 sent shockwaves through the developer community and resulted in an erosion of trust, paramount to a flourishing platform.

Slack’s API & Aligned Incentives

Contrast Twitter’s approach with the way Slack manages their API ecosystem. Slack has deliberately aligned incentives with their ecosystem, focusing on complimentary apps that are weaved into their service. For instance, some of the top apps on Slack’s API cover functions such as project management, calendar control, expense accounting, and more. These Slack apps that utilize a subset of scopes & permissions (via OAuth) are featured in an app directory after a review is conducted. This directory helps increase discoverability and distribution, crucial to removing friction and providing apps with the user liquidity they need to thrive.

These third-party apps enrich the core Slack experience in complementary ways. This is good for all participants: users get a better experience, developers acquire more users, and Slack gets far more functionality than it could have developed in house. The incentives are aligned. Slack is taking a proactive approach to guiding and managing their ecosystem. Despite the dangers of publishing a roadmap that’s certain to change, Slack has done so in the spirit of setting expectations. Furthermore, they’ve provisioned an “Ideaboard” to relay market feedback they get from customers; giving developers a sense of the problems that customers need solved.

Perhaps most impressive, Slack assembled an $80M fund to directly invest in third-party apps. This is putting money where Slack’s mouth is, provisioning capital to the developer community and allowing them to sustain operations while they build a business. Slack has invested almost $2M into 14 apps, with a particular focus on bot-style apps. This is a fantastic approach to ensuring that the best apps are rewarded and encouraged to maintain a high quality experience.

By connecting these data sources, she found the medical records of the governor of Massachusetts.

"The Twitter Engineering Efficiency team motto is: “Quality, Speed, Joy”. Those are the three things we are trying to affect across all of Twitter engineering. Unlike that other famous triple, Fast, Cheap, Good, we believe you don’t have to pick just two. In fact they feed into each other: Building things right will let you go faster. Building faster will give you more time to experiment and find your way to the right thing. And everybody enjoys building good stuff and a lot of it."

"I am trying to add many users to Twitter lists programmatically. The program works by retrieving the user_ids of all of the people a Twitter user is following and then adding those people to list. For whatever reason, culling those user_ids ocassionally returns non-existent or suspended users. When my script takes the list of user_ids and attempts to add them to lists with lists/members/create_all (100 at a time), Twitter's API chokes if any of those bogus user_ids appear in the request, returning a 404. This is the only REST endpoint I know of that fails on the entire request if any parameter is bad.

Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing which of the user_ids is bad unless I run users/lookup for all of them. (This is expensive; it requires dozens of additional Twitter API queries.) users/lookup does NOT choke on bogus user_ids but simply returns no data in those cases (desired behavior). For example, if you do users/lookup on 20 user_ids and 1 of those is bogus, users/lookup simply returns 19 results. I can capture this data into an array and then compare it with my original array of user_ids. Again, doable but expensive.

This seems to be a bug. If lists/members/create_all receives multiple user IDs and any of them are bogus, the API should proceed to add the good user_ids and gracefully ignore the bad ones."

"I want to make something clear from the start: I love Twitter, though sometimes I wonder if I’m suffering from Stockholm syndrome. I have devoted much of the last three years of my life to working with the Twitter API and continue to pursue building the world’s best Twitter client for professionals in the form of Siftee. Recently Twitter staff has been reaching out to developers with a renewed vigor in the hopes of recapturing some of the goodwill and enthusiasm that has been squandered in the past two years. I applaud them for that. The new developer discussion site and documentation portal are significant improvements. Jack Dorsey has reached out for feedback. I recently spent time on the phone with Jason Costa, Twitter’s developer relations manager, at his request. I think these are all good signs for the ecosystem.

With that said, there is a lot of feedback to give. This post is a technical one focused on the API itself, not on Twitter’s relationship with developers"
