And a workflow is really just a series of actions that causes one field in a database to change to another. Open Support Ticket to Closed Support Ticket. Lead to Closed/Won Opportunity. Open Job Rec to Hired Employee.

If you investigate any valuable business, you’ll realize that enterprise value rises as the Objects owned are more critical to running a business. It’s why Salesforce, Workday, and ServiceNow are huge, and most other businesses by comparison are not.

Because Salesforce owns the customer, Workday owns the employee, and ServiceNow owns your technology. And what is a business if not employees, customers, and technology?

Salesforce has built an empire with this ownership of the data model. You don’t touch the customer without talking to Salesforce

I have been worried about the state of FOSS in general and having read these two posts is a good an excuse as any for getting the rudimentary outline of the worry out onto the page.

Short version: my mental model of FOSS is that it’s a function of industry and labour surplus:

Industry. The software industry has extremely high margins (products that are both non-rivalrous and non-excludable will do that) and historically easy access to investment because of both low interest rates and the pervasive belief among the financial class that successful tech companies grow exponentially for extended periods.
Labour. Even though coders come from varying backgrounds, once they have a career many, if not most, become relatively high income middle class with significant spare time. A non-trivial number of coders in California also have moderate wealth from being secondary or tertiary beneficiaries of industry liquidity events which lets them work on FOSS as much as they want. (This is what keeps a surprising number of FOSS projects afloat.)
Industry surplus also leads to labour surplus in that companies let coders work on related FOSS projects during work.

Socio-technical architecture is a new trend this year, and it encompasses several related ideas. One aspect is the role of architects, which has been previously referred to as "architecture as a team sport" or "architect as technical leader." This encapsulates the idea that anyone can make an architectural decision and that architects have a responsibility to mentor and teach others. The other aspect of socio-technical architecture covers ideas like Team Topologies and Conway's Law.

More companies are starting to realize that the design of a system must consider all the people who build, support, and maintain the system. While any one concept may have moved to the early majority stage, the comprehensive idea of socio-technical architecture is currently at the early adopter stage.

If a correction makes the role less glamorous and the fast followers move onto the next trend then it should be welcomed.

Great article, Kin. Indeed we killed off "Full Life Cycle API Management" because we see a move away from a single solution to design, test, secure, publish, and manage APIs. Now our Magic Quadrant is the "Magic Quadrant for API Management" and we have a separate report on API Gateways (and more to come). As you say, the current state-of-the-art is a developer-friendly GitOps type approach to API Gateways. I disagree with the advisability of providing coding hooks to extend the API Gateway functionality, but definitely agree that more API Gateways should support API mocking.

HOMEPAGE

College is too damn expensive. Even if Joe Biden makes good on his plan to wipe out $10,000 of debt for every American with student loans, it would do nothing to bring down the staggering prices that colleges charge for admission. Indeed, the fact that debt forgiveness has become politically viable makes clear just how many people have been hurt by the crushing cost of obtaining a higher education. Today some 44 million Americans owe $1.78 trillion in undergraduate and graduate student loans — more than the GDPs of all but a dozen countries.

Small wonder that more and more families are beginning to doubt whether college is worth the price of admission. In a survey commissioned by Insider and conducted by YouGov, Americans of every generation agreed that going to college today is "not worth the financial cost." Baby boomers, who are footing the bill for their children, are the most skeptical of the price tag: Fifty-seven percent responded that college isn't worth the cost. Gen Z, by contrast, is the most positive about the price — but 46% of Gen Zers still say the cost outweighs the benefits.

If we want to end the mounting crisis of student debt, we must figure out how to make college more affordable for a majority of students. But most of the solutions currently being considered, from freezing tuition to doubling federal aid, don't address the underlying cause of the crisis. To bring down costs at both public and private schools, we must first understand why college got so expensive in the first place — and consider a more dramatic overhaul of the role that higher education plays in today's job market.

First, some good news: College isn't as expensive as you think. Yes, costs at elite schools like Harvard are staggeringly high — but very few students at four-year colleges actually pay the full list price for tuition, fees, room, and board. At most private colleges and some public schools, the list price is more fiction than reality — a fiction designed to squeeze as much money as possible out of wealthy students and their parents. Think of it as a sticker price on a car lot. What the dealer is asking for isn't what you're likely to wind up paying. You'll haggle for a lower price — and drive off thinking you got a deal.

How today's data centers marry clean tech with reliability in providing information and enabling global economies

That's basically the way it works at colleges. Schools use "merit" aid to discount the sticker price for pretty much everyone except the wealthiest students. I use quotation marks, because merit aid is granted to half the students at public colleges and 84% at private colleges. In addition to merit discounts, many students from low- and middle-income households receive state and federal grants that do not need to be paid back.

Scaling APIs requires companies to be sure they can handle increased loads during traffic spikes or other unexpected events, for instance.

In addition, many companies embracing a cloud-native approach are also moving toward microservices architecture, where independently deployable services replace legacy, monolithic software suites. This increases the number of APIs that companies need to manage and maintain, leading to increased complexity.

It is crucial for companies to understand that integrating and maintaining a large — and likely increasing — load of APIs requires skilled developers who can understand and manage this complexity.

First up is an innovative use of Backstage from the engineering team at Carousell, which software engineer Praveen Sanap has shared with me. The company adopted Backstage when it had more than 100 engineers and the goals to improve efficiency of developer operations and to create a single platform for dev tools. Disneyland Resort is composed of two individual theme parks: Disneyland (the original park) and Disney’s California Adventure. They are separated by a shopping district called Downtown Disney. If you want to do Disneyland properly—which we’re defining as being thorough, but at a brisk, non-strenuous pace—you need at least three days: one day for Disneyland, one day for California Adventure, and a third and final day to mop up any attractions you missed, finally get those beignets, re-ride your favorites, explore Downtown Disney, and shop for souvenirs.

If you go for more than one day, you’ll pay more, but each individual day will cost less. A two-day Disneyland ticket for an adult is $285, which breaks down to $142.50 per day. A three-day ticket for an adult is $360, which breaks down to $120 per day. The aforementioned family of four, going to Disneyland for three peak days, would pay $1400 to get through the gates.

Then there’s the extras. You have the option of a Park Hopper pass, which allows you to visit both parks in a single day. The Park Hopper option is $60 per person, regardless of the number of days you’re visiting. If you’re the aforementioned family of four that’s staying for three days, you’re up to $1640. If you want Genie+ for all three days, for all four family members, that’s $360. Now you’re up to $2000. And lastly, the individual Lightning Lanes can range anywhere from $7 to $25, and can vary depending on Guest demand. Let’s throw in 50 dollars per person for that.

So the total charge—to go to Disneyland for three days and spend more time having fun instead of waiting on stand-by lines—is $2200, before tax. That’s before airfare, hotel, food, parking (which just received a 25% increase), and souvenirs. In 2019, the same three day trip, on peak days, would have cost approximately $1000 less.

"In defense of REST, it is tempting to take these criticisms at face value and come up with counterpoints like these:

For the GraphQL case, nothing in the REST paradigm prevents consumer choice or resource aggregation (it has merely been a common practice to use static interfaces on single resources) and there is plenty of information suggesting that constraining consumer choice has its own benefits
For gRPC, runtime optimization is unlikely to be the primary bottleneck in most distributed architectures, and gRPC's embedded library requirement -- not to mention protobuf's enumerated structure -- can lead to unforeseen issues
For async, there is absolutely a need to include event-based scenarios, but those are likely in addition to synchronous patterns like queries and commands
However, in my opinion these counter arguments do not tell the whole story.2 Software engineering is a restless industry, and we frequently oversimplify our problems in order to justify overly simplistic solutions. We like to label the "burning platform" so we can incent people to leap to some new safety. Real-time processing is good because batch is bad. Microservices are good because monoliths are bad. Using REST as the bogeyman on a context-by-context basis like the arguments above creates a series of false dichotomies. Rather than looking at what REST lacks in each of the above scenarios, perhaps we should examine a different question: how did REST become the default communication approach for component-to-component network hops in distributed computing? It’s been getting harder for me to read things on my phone and my laptop. I’ve caught myself squinting and holding the screen closer to my face. I’ve worried that my eyesight is starting to go. These hurdles have made me grumpier over time, but what pushed me over the edge was when Google’s App Engine console — a page that, as a developer, I use daily — changed its text from legible to illegible. Text that was once crisp and dark was suddenly lightened to a pallid gray. Though age has indeed taken its toll on my eyesight, it turns out that I was suffering from a design trend.
There’s a widespread movement in design circles to reduce the contrast between text and background, making type harder to read. Apple is guilty. Google is, too. So is Twitter.
Typography may not seem like a crucial design element, but it is. One of the reasons the web has become the default way that we access information is that it makes that information broadly available to everyone. “The power of the Web is in its universality,” wrote Tim Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web consortium. “Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect.”"

Of course I have a vested interest in this shift: for better or worse I, by virtue of making my living on Stratechery, am a member of the media, and it would be disingenuous to pretend that my opinions aren’t shaped by the fact I have a personal stake in the matter. Today, though, and somewhat reluctantly, I am not just acknowledging my interests but explicitly putting Stratechery forward as an example of just how misguided the conventional wisdom is about the Internet’s long-term impact on society, in ways that extend far beyond newspapers (but per my point, let’s start there).

First, geographic mobility in the United States has become very class-dependent. Once upon a time, lower-income people were willing to pull up stakes and move to places with greater opportunity — think of the people who fled the Dust Bowl for California in the 1930s, or those who took the “Hillbilly Highway” out of Appalachia to work in Midwestern factories, or Southern blacks on the Great Migration. In recent decades, though, internal migration has slowed sharply, and the people who are most likely to move for better opportunities are the highly educated.

Second, higher levels of education are increasingly correlated with voting Democratic. This has been most starkly on display in the 2016 election, as polls suggest that Donald J. Trump may be the first Republican in 60 years to not win a majority of white voters with college degrees, even as he holds his own among white voters without degrees. But the trend of increasing Democratic identification among college graduates, and increasing Republican identification among non-graduates, was underway before Mr. Trump arrived on the scene. Today, Democrats hold a 12-point edge in party identification among those with a college degree or more. In 2004, the parties were even on that score.

Finally, in the United States the economic gap between the wealthiest cities and the rest of the country has grown considerably. The internet was supposed to allow wealth to spread out, since we could be connected anywhere — but the opposite has happened. Per capita income in the District of Columbia has gone from 29 percent above the United States average in 1980 to 68 percent in 2013; in the Bay Area, from 50 percent above to 88 percent; in New York City, from 80 percent above to 172 percent. Cities like New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Boston exert a strong pull on mobile, highly educated, Democratic-leaning voters, while at the same time stirring resentment in the less prosperous areas those voters leave behind. And these economically dominant cities tend to be in deep-blue states.

How extreme is Democratic clustering? If you compare President Obama’s 2012 performance with Al Gore’s in 2000, you can see a huge increase in the Democratic percentage of the vote in the 68 largest metro areas. But it barely budged everywhere else. Some of that increase was caused by voters already in those cities flipping from Republican to Democratic. But it was also the gravitational effect.

This clustering of Democrats helps explain why Mr. Trump has been keeping it close in Ohio and Iowa, both states where some 72 percent of white residents over 24 lack college degrees, the highest share among the 13 most competitive states.

"It is possible that the pattern of 10–15 year computing cycles has ended and mobile is the final era. It is also possible the next era won’t arrive for a while, or that only a subset of the new computing categories discussed above will end up being important.
I tend to think we are on the cusp of not one but multiple new eras. The “peace dividend of the smartphone war” created a Cambrian explosion of new devices, and developments in software, especially AI, will make those devices smart and useful. Many of the futuristic technologies discussed above exist today, and will be broadly accessible in the near future.
Observers have noted that many of these new devices are in their “awkward adolescence.” That is because they are in their gestation phase. Like PCs in the 70s, the internet in the 80s, and smartphones in the early 2000s, we are seeing pieces of a future that isn’t quite here. But the future is coming: markets go up and down, and excitement ebbs and flows, but computing technology marches steadily forward."
