Revoke all permissions by default, including background location, microphone, and camera permissions for anything that doesn’t require them to function.
Audit your installed apps. Uninstall all apps you don’t actively need.

Signal’s president since 2022 is one of the world’s most prominent tech critics: When she worked at Google, she led walkouts to protest its discriminatory practices and spoke out against its military contracts. She cofounded the AI Now Institute to address ethical implications of artificial intelligence and has become a leading voice for the notion that AI and surveillance are inherently intertwined. Since she took on the presidency at the Signal Foundation, she has come to see her central task as working to find a long-term taproot of funding to keep Signal alive for decades to come—with zero compromises or corporate entanglements—so it can serve as a model for an entirely new kind of tech ecosystem.

In reality, it’s the fact that it is completely legal for every entity you do business with including your employer, bank, grocery store, cell phone provider, DMV, etc can sell your data. The entire credit reporting industry is built on this.

Then the media created the lie that social media sells your data when in truth it’s everyone else.

Kelly Conlon and her daughter came to New York City the weekend after Thanksgiving as part of a Girl Scout field trip to Radio City Music Hall to see the Christmas Spectacular show. But while her daughter, other members of the Girl Scout troop and their mothers got to go enjoy the show, Conlon wasn't allowed to do so.

That's because to Madison Square Garden Entertainment, Conlon isn't just any mom. They had identified and zeroed in on her, as security guards approached her right as he got into the lobby.

No JavaScript or ads
All requests go through the backend, client never talks to Twitter
Prevents Twitter from tracking your IP or JavaScript fingerprint
Uses Twitter's unofficial API (no rate limits or developer account required)
Lightweight (for @nim_lang, 60KB vs 784KB from twitter.com)
RSS feeds
Themes
Mobile support (responsive design)
AGPLv3 licensed, no proprietary instances permitted
Nitter's GitHub wiki contains instances and browser extensions maintained by the community.

Why use Nitter?
It's basically impossible to use Twitter without JavaScript enabled. If you try, you're redirected to the legacy mobile version which is awful both functionally and aesthetically. For privacy-minded folks, preventing JavaScript analytics and potential IP-based tracking is important, but apart from using the legacy mobile version and a VPN, it's impossible.

Using an instance of Nitter (hosted on a VPS for example), you can browse Twitter without JavaScript while retaining your privacy. In addition to respecting your privacy, Nitter is on average around 15 times lighter than Twitter, and in some cases serves pages faster.

In the future a simple account system will be added that lets you follow Twitter users, allowing you to have a clean chronological timeline without needing a Twitter account.

CAPTCHAs seem to be everywhere. Anyone who uses the web is painfully familiar with them. They provide useful anti-fraud protection for websites, but they also make the web less accessible: some users don’t care to solve them (and move on), while other users have difficulty solving CAPTCHAs altogether – and are prohibited from accessing content.

Likewise, privacy-minded folks have concerns about what is happening with the data they provide to solve CAPTCHAs. Are CAPTCHA solves and legacy authorization tokens being used to track us? Folks with privacy-oriented browsing configurations are given plenty of prompts to think about these questions – they often get challenged with even more CAPTCHAs than typical users.

Private Access Tokens are an alternative to CAPTCHAs for supported client platforms. They use careful application of cryptography and requirements to guarantee that a website learns only exactly what it needs to know about a user in order to provide access to a resource. Human interaction is not required and there is no leakage of non-essential data.

She discovered that 87% of Americans were uniquely identifiable based on a combination of their ZIP code, gender, and date of birth. By connecting these data sources, she found the medical records of the governor of Massachusetts.

"Homomorphic encryption is a form of encryption that allows computations to be carried out on ciphertext, thus generating an encrypted result which, when decrypted, matches the result of operations performed on the plaintext.

This is sometimes a desirable feature in modern communication system architectures. Homomorphic encryption would allow the chaining together of different services without exposing the data to each of those services. For example, a chain of different services from different companies could calculate 1) the tax 2) the currency exchange rate 3) shipping, on a transaction without exposing the unencrypted data to each of those services.[1] Homomorphic encryption schemes are malleable by design. This enables their use in cloud computing environment for ensuring the confidentiality of processed data. In addition the homomorphic property of various cryptosystems can be used to create many other secure systems, for example secure voting systems,[2] collision-resistant hash functions, private information retrieval schemes, and many more.

"I have a proposal for something I call "Private Address Forwarding" (PAF).
tl;dr proposal: Google Voice for postal mail. The USPS assigns you a unique ID, you tell them where to forward that ID, and they can't disclose who it belongs to or where it goes without court process or your permission. You could get mail that's just addressed to "PAF 13JS-00EG-C, United States", and it'd automagically get routed to you. You can also choose to give UPS, FedEx, etc permission to access the forwarding info if you want.

tl;dr benefits: Getting mail while preserving your privacy; never having to update your address w/ everyone when you move (just w/ the USPS); cheaper & easier than PO boxes.

Using an obscure, technical, never-before-used 2006 law, I've gotten the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) and USPS to start formally considering this proposal. "

"Many introverts seem to know this instinctively, and resist being herded together. Backbone Entertainment, a video game development company in Emeryville, Calif., initially used an open-plan office, but found that its game developers, many of whom were introverts, were unhappy. “It was one big warehouse space, with just tables, no walls, and everyone could see each other,” recalled Mike Mika, the former creative director. “We switched over to cubicles and were worried about it — you’d think in a creative environment that people would hate that. But it turns out they prefer having nooks and crannies they can hide away in and just be away from everybody.”

Privacy also makes us productive. In a fascinating study known as the Coding War Games, consultants Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister compared the work of more than 600 computer programmers at 92 companies. They found that people from the same companies performed at roughly the same level — but that there was an enormous performance gap between organizations. What distinguished programmers at the top-performing companies wasn’t greater experience or better pay. It was how much privacy, personal workspace and freedom from interruption they enjoyed. Sixty-two percent of the best performers said their workspace was sufficiently private compared with only 19 percent of the worst performers. Seventy-six percent of the worst programmers but only 38 percent of the best said that they were often interrupted needlessly."

It should be clear enough that an average user can understand, and short enough that people can actually read it.” The new site, PortabilityPolicy.org, contains a series of questions that will help guide you in creating a Portability Policy as well as several samples."

It's called "privacy salience", and Leslie John, Alessandro Acquisti, and George Loewenstein – all at Carnegie Mellon University – demonstrated this in a series of clever experiments. In one, subjects completed an online survey consisting of a series of questions about their academic behaviour – "Have you ever cheated on an exam?" for example. Half of the subjects were first required to sign a consent warning – designed to make privacy concerns more salient – while the other half did not. Also, subjects were randomly assigned to receive either a privacy confidentiality assurance, or no such assurance. When the privacy concern was made salient (through the consent warning), people reacted negatively to the subsequent confidentiality assurance and were less likely to reveal personal information."

The voting process is full of loopholes, and was essentially a publicity stunt that they called "democracy theatre"; 2. Facebook absolves itself of any responsibility for data security, leaving user information at the mercy of third parties; 3. Simple principles at the start of the Facebook documents are later on, deceptively, overridden by detailed legal language that users are unlikely to understand. After a three week silence, Facebook has released a trivial reply to the criticisms raised by the Cambridge group and others. None of the substantive points has been addressed, and the revised document is effectively identical to the original version, with merely superficial changes."

Computers can control you or they can lighten your work — if you want to be in charge of your machines, you have to learn to write code.” The framers of the American Constitution were in a sense a bunch of political science nerds too, pulling all-nighters to hack together the code for a government without tyranny. “Little Brother” argues that unless you’re passably technically literate, you’re not fully in command of those constitutionally guaranteed freedoms — that in fact it’s your patriotic duty as an American to be a little more nerdy."

It is difficult to guarantee complete anonymization, but we believe these changes will make it very unlikely users could be identified....
