Antonymy is the lexical relation of opposition. The nature of the oppositeness may differ – e.g., contradictory (‘true’–‘false’) or gradable (‘tall’–‘short’) – and there may be variation as to the relationship in their formal encoding, whether the antonyms are expressed as distinct lexical forms (e.g., true vs. false) or if one form is derived from the other (e.g., true vs. untrue). We investigate the relationship between the two members of 37 antonym pairs across 55 spoken languages in order to see whether there are patterns in how antonymy is expressed and which of the two antonym members is more likely to be derived from the other. We find great variation in the extent to which languages use derivation (labeled “neg-constructed forms”) as an antonym-formation strategy. However, when we do find a derived form, this tends to target the member of the pair that is either lower in valence (positive vs. negative) or magnitude (more vs. less), in line with our hypotheses. We also find that antonyms that belong to a core set of property concepts are more likely to encode antonyms as distinct lexical forms, whereas peripheral property concepts are relatively more likely to encode the antonyms with derived forms.

decent overview that's somewhat undone by not declaring author bias but more so by suggesting that a/b testing is a good idea (it isn't)

Developers are expensive. Engineering is a valuable skill, especially at the level required to develop, maintain, and manage an API gateway. You’ll need individual contributors or teams dedicated to this task. You’ll also need to consider the costs of hiring, onboarding, and retaining this talent over time. These costs can quickly add up and eclipse any perceived savings from building in-house.
You’ll pay for infrastructure either way. API management tools provide some of the infrastructure for managing your API. If you don’t use a platform for doing this, you need to build that platform. What is this going to entail? Maybe some pleasant serverless instances. It’s a little bit of an edge network. A load balancer here and there. Some reverse proxies, some monitoring, some caching. All of it has costs (unless you are heading around the world setting up your edge network? I guess then you have to factor in flight costs), and all also need managing.
You’re not doing other things. In proper terminology, there is an opportunity cost any time you choose to go it alone instead of seeking help. If you have developers maintaining your API, they aren’t building it. If you want them to make your API, you have to hire someone dedicated to managing your API, which (back to point one) will cost you more than paying for a gateway.

As social media sites update, they become more interactive and more “addicting,” and the opportunity for social comparison increases. This also increases the negative outcomes of self comparison: depression, anxiety, poor self-esteem, poor body image, and disordered eating. Although perhaps unconnected, it is worth noting that concerning mental health trends (e.g. depression, anxiety, body image issues), in youth worsened during the same period of time that teen smartphone and social media use increased. Although establishing clear links between social media use and larger mental health trends is challenging for many reasons, it is quite clear that engaging in a lot of negative social comparison is one of several likely contributors to these trends.

This is because creating a false life on social media for the sake of likes/followers can make our shortcomings or struggles in real life seem all the more difficult and we lose sight of what’s real. Even brief exposure to social media can trigger social comparison, and self-evaluations were lower when people viewed profiles of healthy or successful people.

The expectation of developers at traditional companies is to complete assigned work. At SV-like companies, it's to solve problems that the business has. This is a huge difference. It impacts the day-to-day life of any engineer.
Curious problem solvers, not mindless resources. A motivated engineer easily makes multiple times the impact of a "factory worker" who only does what they’re told. For organizations with a factory worker attitude, this approach will bias towards more heavyweight project management approaches that leave little room for interpretation, on purpose.

Is asynchronous communication event-driven?
The motivation to follow an asynchronous communication style is to remove the need for the sender to wait for a reply from the receiver. In a synchronous communication style, the sender has to wait for the receiver to act upon the information and reply. In practice, both sender and receiver will be in sync. If you can imagine a timeline, you would see feature A being started, then feature D being executed and completed, and finally feature A being completed. In other words, feature D is a part of feature A and cannot be dissociated. To make things more complicated, from a user perspective, there is no feature D. Feature D is hidden from the user as a part of feature A, so it wouldn’t feel natural for a user to wait for it to end. Following an asynchronous communication style seems to make the user experience much better because users wouldn’t have to wait for so long.

REST and GraphQL are totally different
GraphQL isn't a magic bullet, nor is it "better"
You can definitely use both at the same time
GraphQL is dope if used for the right thing

AND:
Ask yourself - at the very least - these following questions:

How different are your clients from each other?

Do you trust your clients to handle caching?

Do you want "dumb clients" that act like crawlers - knowing very little about the API, or clients that own a lot of the logic and know a lot about the API, using it simply as a data transfer?

Are you ok letting go of HTTP debugging proxies, cache proxies, all the knowledge your team have around HTTP, etc?

Are you just doing basic CRUD with simple JSON documents, or will your API need file upload/download too?

Some APIs such as those with very few entities and relationships across entities like analytics APIs may not be suited for GraphQL. Whereas applications with many different domain objects like e-commerce where you have items, users, orders, payments, and so on may be able to leverage GraphQL much more.

In fact, GraphQL vs REST is like comparing SQL technologies vs noSQL. There are certain applications where it makes sense to model complex entities in a SQL Db. Whereas other apps that only have “messages” as in high volume chat apps or analytics APIs where the only entity is an “event” may be more suited using something like Cassandra."

"As I have been ramping up my evangelizing of hypermedia APIs through various channels, I have noticed a common argument being thrown out against hypermedia. It’s taken a few forms, but the crux of the argument has been something like ‘hypermedia APIs just move the hard coded binding from URLs to link names but they don’t actually solve any problems’. In most of these discussions, the flexibility and maintainability benefits of hypermedia APIs have already been brushed aside as unimportant and irrelevant. Now I clearly have some things to say about those points, but as the people I’ve had this recurring conversation with had little interest in those properties I’ve decided to instead address the direct and immediate benefits of a hypermedia over CRUD APIs. Namely, these are the greatly enhanced usability and proper hiding of service implementation details. To accomplish this, I have put together a portion of an API description in the crud pattern which is intentionally not optimized to exaggerate the point I’m making, namely that crud APIs are less usable and require the consumer to know too much about the internal implementation details of a service to consume it. I will also list and describe the usability and proper hiding of implementation details of a hypermedia API using my hypermedia API design guidelines."

"An SDK is like a box of cake mix. It has pre-built functionality that makes baking a cake faster and easier. You don’t necessarily even have to know much about, or have any experience, baking.

An API on the other hand is like a recipe used to bake a cake. It’s a set of instructions with room to be creative. You can get to the same end result, but without previous knowledge it’s much more difficult and may have some unintended consequences. Additionally, you can get cake mix geared towards cupcakes, pancakes, or even in different flavors; the same way each SDK is a software toolset specially crafted for a given language or platform to interact with the underlying services."

"GraphQL is new. GraphQL is cool. Look! Github dumped REST for it! We MUST do it too!
Well, why not. GraphQL could be a great tool, but like any tool, you don’t choose it just because. You choose it because it solves a problem in a given context. You choose it knowing its strengths and weaknesses.

While discovering what is GraphQL we will see what REST API providers should think about before blindly dumping REST for it. From design and implementation to pricing model and analytics down to developers experience and implementations, choosing an API design style will have impact on the whole API lifecycle. Therefore, this choice must be an enligthned one and not based on simple beliefs."

"The data preparation phase is often known as ETL (Extract Transform Load) or the data factory. "Factory" is a good analogy because it captures the essence of what is being done in this stage: Just as a physical factory brings in raw materials and outputs products ready for consumers, so a data factory brings in raw data and produces data sets ready for data users to consume. Raw data is loaded in, cleaned up, conformed to the selected data model, joined with other data sources, and so on. Users in this phase are generally engineers, data specialists, or researchers.

The data presentation phase is usually referred to as the data warehouse. A warehouse stores products ready for consumers; they need only come and select the proper products off of the shelves. In this phase, users may be engineers using the data for their systems, analysts, or decisionmakers.

Given the different workloads and different users for each phase, we have found that different tools work best in each phase. Pig (combined with a workflow system such as Oozie) is best suited for the data factory, and Hive for the data warehouse."

Pig Latin is procedural, where SQL is declarative.
Pig Latin allows pipeline developers to decide where to checkpoint data in the pipeline.
Pig Latin allows the developer to select specific operator implementations directly rather than relying on the optimizer.
Pig Latin supports splits in the pipeline.
Pig Latin allows developers to insert their own code almost anywhere in the data pipeline."

"During the time before latest release of highlight.js 6.0 I decided — for the first time in more than 4 years — to actually look at other highlighting libraries. Sure I knew of their existence before but nonetheless never felt compelled to do any serious comparison because highlight.js is a fun project and I'm quite happy with the result. In fact this comparison has also been made for fun more than for anything else. I just wondered how actually good (or bad) highlight.js was looking among similar libraries.

I decided not to take into account highly subjective things like visual appeal, installation simplicity and documentation clarity. Also I didn't evaluate number of supported languages. While it is a measurable quantity it doesn't mean much for an end user: if a tool doesn't support the language you need you don't care about dozens of others that it does support. Instead I concentrated on universally measurable things that make sense for everyone: size, speed and correctness."

But after playing with CoffeeScript for just a few days, I knew I’d never go back. The syntactic sugar was only the beginning. I was writing code more quickly and with fewer bugs, because everything was so much clearer. It became much easier to tap into the good parts of JavaScript—and there are many—while steering clear of the bad. I’ve listed a few of those nasty bits below, along with some of the ways CoffeeScript makes it easy to avoid them."
