Ramesses II

Owner
King during Dynasty 19 of ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom; ruled nearly 67 years and fathered over 100 children. Ramses fought a number of battles against foreign enemies, such as the Hittites and the Nubians, and built many temples and other monuments throughout Egypt and Nubia. Despite ruling over a thousand years after the pyramids were built and being buried far to the south in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, there is evidence that Ramses may have done some building, restoring, and/or usurping of earlier monuments at Giza. Prenomen: Usermaatre Setepenre.

One of the challenges of working with the material is the difficulty of gluing pre-painted, non-porous surfaces together. “In response to this, I once ordered 30,000 unpainted pencils to make larger sculptures that could be glued into more dynamic shapes,” she says.

Over time, the Implements series has influenced further sculptures, such as “Speleothem” and “Formation,” in which the pencils compose larger dynamic forms. “In a sense, both aspects of the pieces resemble nature,” Drenk says. “Even the hexagon is found in nature, from beehives to columnar basalt rocks.”

The latent space of an LLM is a mapping of semantics (meaning). Vectors that are nearby in the space have similar meaning, and in some spaces, you can do math meaningfully on the vectors - for example, taking the vector for “king”, subtracting the vector for “man” and adding the vector for “woman” gets the vector for “queen” if the embedding is rich enough.
So, some of what we are doing when we prompt an LLMs is “guiding” it to look at a particular part of the latent space. That’s why things like “ask a dumb question, get a dumb answer” work, and why some of the counterintuitive things like promising a tip have impact - you’re directing the LLMs attention to part of the space.
Here’s the weird idea: what if art (human art, like in galleries, etc) is satisfying to us because it’s pointing our attention to unused or unusual parts of our own internal latent spaces? Or highlighting an unusual, high dimensional connection we weren’t aware of? Maybe that’s why we like it, and why art tends to feel “oblique” - you have to combine some unusual vectors to find an unusual part of the space. Banksy is “high art” + “street art” + “high competence” + “guerilla” + “anti-capitalist” and that’s all a strange part of the space.
I don’t know if this is really what’s happening, but I suspect something like it is. I think this is why we are annoyed when art is dumb - we expected to be taken on a ride but got pointed to a predictable, familiar part of the space. Or some art is very challenging - it shows connections between things we thought were farther apart.

he asymmetry in time and effort it takes human artists to produce original art vs the speed generative AI models can now get the task done is one of the reasons why Glaze, an academic research project out of the University of Chicago, looks so interesting. It’s just launched a free (non-commercial) app for artists (download link here) to combat the theft of their ‘artistic IP’ — scraped into data-sets to train AI tools designed to mimic visual style — via the application of a high tech “cloaking” technique.

A research paper published by the team explains the (beta) app works by adding almost imperceptible “perturbations” to each artwork it’s applied to — changes that are designed to interfere with AI models’ ability to read data on artistic style — and make it harder for generative AI technology to mimic the style of the artwork and its artist. Instead systems are tricked into outputting other public styles far removed from the original artwork.

The efficacy of Glaze’s style defence does vary, per its makers — with some artistic styles better suited to being “cloaked” (and thus protected) from prying AIs than others. Other factors (like countermeasures) can affect its performance, too. But the goal is to provide artists with a tool to fight back against the data miners’ incursions — and at least disrupt their ability to rip hard-worked artistic style without them needing to give up on publicly showcasing their work online.

Sitting in cafe, my mind wandered from the theoretical stuff I was learning during an MSc, and I had the idea to create a large display from seven-segment displays.

Electronics was a hobby, but I had no idea where to begin, and after a bit of research I saw that Skot Coshere had pretty much done exactly what I was thinking. Kudos to him, he did a great job.

A couple of years later, I made a small (12 x 3 digit) attempt at a display. It was a breadboard prototype and the reality was that I just wasn’t capable of making something bigger.

Fast forward about five years (Jan 2020) and for some reason, I found myself looking at some cheap LED drivers on eBay, the drivers that Skot had used in his project. They seemed perfect for the job and I went ahead and bought a load.

After a beer with a friend and then a chat with a curator, my idea was accepted for an exhibition which was 6 weeks away, I had the deadline I needed and an excuse to not just work on client projects! (The exhibition never happened because of Covid-19)

If you haven’t been paying attention to what’s going on with Stable Diffusion, you really should be.

Stable Diffusion is a new “text-to-image diffusion model” that was released to the public by Stability.ai six days ago, on August 22nd.

It’s similar to models like Open AI’s DALL-E, but with one crucial difference: they released the whole thing.

You can try it out online at beta.dreamstudio.ai (currently for free). Type in a text prompt and the model will generate an image.

You can download and run the model on your own computer (if you have a powerful enough graphics card). Here’s an FAQ on how to do that.

You can use it for commercial and non-commercial purposes, under the terms of the Creative ML OpenRAIL-M license—which lists some usage restrictions that include avoiding using it to break applicable laws, generate false information, discriminate against individuals or provide medical advice.

In just a few days, there has been an explosion of innovation around it. The things people are building are absolutely astonishing.

The Art of Product Management - by Ken Norton

What a fantastic post.
"I want to explore “The Art” further today. My hope with this essay is that we can all begin to appreciate how critical these so-called soft skills—or rather, “human skills”—are to product management.

(I’m certainly not the first to point this out. Folks like Petra Wille, Kate Leto, Teresa Torres, and Lisa Zane have explored this. It’s just that all that other “Science-y” stuff—the frameworks, models, tools, threads 🧵👇, and methodologies—suck up so much of the oxygen in the PM community.)

Allow me to head off a response I’m sure to receive: “This applies to anyone. None of this is specific to product managers.” Yes, that’s exactly right! And it’s precisely why they’re often overlooked and matter so much. Anyone will benefit from building these muscles. But they are crucial for success in product management.

The skills that comprise “The Art” primarily fall into six purpose areas. Let’s call them “The Six C’s:”

Communication: the ability to connect and share with other people

Collaboration: the ability to work with other people and support their ability to work with each other

Creativity: the ability to transcend the traditional and concoct something new

Critical thinking: the ability to analyze, evaluate, and form an objective judgment

Curiosity: the ability to form a strong desire to know what is unknown

Consciousness: the ability to develop the inner strength to navigate, cope, and grow

"Pastiche. A French word, it designates a work of art that imitates the style of another one (not to be confused with its more humorous Greek cousin, parody). Although it has been used for a long time in visual art, music and literature, pastiche has been getting mass attention lately with online forums dedicated to images that have been modified to be in the style of famous paintings. Using a technique known as style transfer, these images are generated by phone or web apps that allow a user to render their favorite picture in the style of a well known work of art.

Although users have already produced gorgeous pastiches using the current technology, we feel that it could be made even more engaging. Right now, each painting is its own island, so to speak: the user provides a content image, selects an artistic style and gets a pastiche back. But what if one could combine many different styles, exploring unique mixtures of well known artists to create an entirely unique pastiche?

In San Francisco, POPOS mostly appear in the Downtown office district area. Prior to 1985, developers provided POPOS under three general circumstances: voluntarily, in exchange for a density bonus, or as a condition of approval. The 1985 Downtown Plan created the first systemic requirements for developers to provide publicly accessible open space as a part of projects in C-3 Districts. The goal was to provide in the downtown quality open space in sufficient quantity and variety to meet the needs of downtown workers, residents and visitors. The POPOs data is available in Google KMZ and GIS Shapefile formats. The zip file contains a .dbf file which can be viewed in Excel or other spreadsheet software. The zip also contains a Google KMZ file of Public Artworks provided as part of the Downtown Plan requirement. Download the data by clicking on the 'ZIP' button at the top right of this page. For more information please visit the POPOS and Public Art website at http://popos.sfplanning.org"
