Except the internet isn’t really set up to signal that someone is listening. You can only demonstrate that you’re paying attention by taking some step to express it: a like, a repost, a reply, an email, a rambly blog post. And because these things take energy, you’re not going to get a signal from the majority of the people you’re trying to reach.

This is a genuine problem with interactions on the internet. It’s a problem that analytics software sort of tries to solve! Shame it ballooned into this privacy-destroying behemoth that undergirds the global surveillance panopticon, but we’ve had page counters as long as we’ve been building websites—we often just want to know that we’re being heard.

Often when I start writing I discover lots of other people are writing about similar themes quite eloquently and decide maybe I didn’t have anything new to say after all. That is still the metrics-poisoned perspective, even if it’s not directly quantified, because it is still rooted in being unique or the first or whatever. The care-ful of looking at this is that these moments of confluence are themselves an indication that we exist in global conversation with one another, and that people are, indeed, listening.

But service managers fretting about how to reengineer their contact centers—departments built on a foundation of delighting the customer—should consider this: A massive shift is under way in terms of customers’ service preferences. Although most companies believe that customers overwhelmingly prefer live phone service to self-service, our most recent data show that customers are, in fact, indifferent. This is an important tipping point and probably presages the end of phone-based service as the primary channel for customer service interactions. For enterprising service managers, it presents an opportunity to rebuild their organizations around self-service and, in the process, to put reducing customer effort firmly at the core, where it belongs.

Work with the engineers on your team to instrument your code so it's generating usable data in the first place.
Extract all your data from the random places it's accumulating, in a zillion incompatible formats
Load it all into some kind of central store, so that you can compare and correlate data coming from different sources
Transform the data from its raw state into answers to questions, either as a one-time analysis or as an ongoing report or dashboard
Figure out what the right questions are for the business to be asking, and what strategic changes are dictated by the answers you get.

Consumer tech and media accelerated in early March followed by B2B SaaS in mid March. The Fintech industry overall didn’t see a clear sustained inflection point."

Gerry McGovern shares a story about Irish Police being criticized for falsifying the number of Breathalyzer tests given, because the department’s emphasis for success fell not on the number of drunk drivers stopped and prosecuted, but rather on the number of tests given.

McGovern calls this a “cult of volume” and deftly shows how metrics can drive behavior and culture. An overemphasis on outputs over outcomes perverts systems, especially metrics that are prone to manipulation and interpretation over observation, explains McGovern.

As we explore in a UIE seminar on metrics, designers and product leaders should combine qualitative and quantitative data to assess the performance of their product designs if they want to make better decisions.

We break down the quantitative language used when we talk about tracking performance:

Measure: Something we can count
Metrics: A measure we can track
Analytic: A measure that software tracks
We use data derived from the observation of our products, both qualitative and quantitative, to find the right solutions. We make inferences from those observations that lead to solutions. But we cannot choose the right solution if we only have the numbers and rely on our assumptions to fill in the rest of the story.

“Google Analytics and all the analytics tools, for the most part, there’s a raft of things they can’t tell you. They cannot tell you what’s useful. They cannot tell you who is spending the most money on your site. They cannot tell you how to improve your content. They can’t even tell you why somebody clicked on something. We can collect all the observations we want, but the inferences are left open, because Google Analytics will not tell you why,” explains Jared.

While helping Google product teams define UX metrics, we noticed that our suggestions tended to fall into five categories:

Happiness: measures of user attitudes, often collected via survey. For example: satisfaction, perceived ease of use, and net-promoter score.
Engagement: level of user involvement, typically measured via behavioral proxies such as frequency, intensity, or depth of interaction over some time period. Examples might include the number of visits per user per week or the number of photos uploaded per user per day.
Adoption: new users of a product or feature. For example: the number of accounts created in the last seven days or the percentage of Gmail users who use labels.
Retention: the rate at which existing users are returning. For example: how many of the active users from a given time period are still present in some later time period? You may be more interested in failure to retain, commonly known as “churn.”
Task success: this includes traditional behavioral metrics of user experience, such as efficiency (e.g. time to complete a task), effectiveness (e.g. percent of tasks completed), and error rate. This category is most applicable to areas of your product that are very task-focused, such as search or an upload flow."

Apparently it’s not common to be so open. Following on from this we’ve been at various conferences over the last couple of years where other small developers have approached us and thanked us for making this information public. There’s even instances where people have used the exact infographic to pitch their own game to investors, stating things like “if we can only make 10% of a Monument Valley we can break even.” Somehow “an MV” has become a unit of measurement.
3rd April 2016 marked the two year anniversary of Monument Valley’s release and with that we now have a lengthy window to analyse how the game’s performed and what we’ve managed to do with it post release.

"describes a hypothetical experiment where you face several slot machines ("one-armed bandits") with potentially different expected payouts. You want to find the slot machine with the best payout rate, but you also want to maximize your winnings. The fundamental tension is between "exploiting" arms that have performed well in the past and "exploring" new or seemingly inferior arms in case they might perform even better. There are highly developed mathematical models for managing the bandit problem, which we use in Google Analytics content experiments."

My heart stopped. I’ve seen campaign tagging cause shenanigans in data but never anything this pandemic. It was the first time I had to tell someone that their analytics data is completely useless. As in they can’t use their analytics data to measure any of their marketing efforts — organic, paid search, campaigns — nothing. Because they had tagged links in their navigation and all through the site, those reassigned visits were just too pervasive."

"The purpose of a cohort report is to help you understand if you are actually improving your metrics over time. This is accomplished by viewing your metrics based on time-based cohorts of users.

For example, with KISSinsights we regularly get free signups each day and we also get a some of those free users to upgrade into paid accounts each day. So if you look a graph that plots out the total number of free and paid users we have, things APPEAR really good.

But when we ran a cohort report we noticed something was off. Although we were constantly getting new free signups each day, all of our paid signups were coming from people who signed up before August, 2011. Very few, if any of the people who signed up after August were upgrading. When we dug deeper, we realized that in August we changed the way new users were prompted to upgrade into premium accounts."
