Key Concepts

There are two key concepts in the new architecture we are proposing to address the shortcomings of the current system. The first, is to move toward a service-based model and the second, is to shift our processing so that it more closely models a workflow approach. This paper does not address what specific technology should be used to implement the new architecture. This should only be determined when we have determined that the new architecture is something that will meet our requirements and we embark on implementing it.

Service-based model

We propose moving towards a three-tier architecture where presentation (client), business logic and data are separated. This has also been called a service-based architecture. The applications (clients) would no longer be able to access the database directly, but only through a well-defined interface that encapsulates the business logic required to perform the function. This means that the client is no longer dependent on the underlying data structure or even where the data is located. The interface between the business logic (in the service) and the database can change without impacting the client since the client interacts with the service though its own interface. Similarly, the client interface can evolve without impacting the interaction of the service and the underlying database.

In such context, I ask “what problem are you trying to solve?”. Do you have ten of thousands consumers doing gazillions of API call combinations? Do you have a product that people basically need to address like a database? No? And do you understand the implication of providing a GraphQL API regarding security, performance and scalability? No?

Then, maybe you should stick to a good old REST API. I’m not against GraphQL, it’s there in my toolbox, but I will only use it if that’s a relevant solution to a clearly identified problem. That’s why I say “We’re not Github”."

The entry points to our web-based services are typically UI and API endpoints, so dedicated system-level dashboards must contain enough data for operators to see how the system and its customer-facing endpoints are behaving. These dashboards primarily display interface-level monitoring data. These dashboards display three categories of monitoring data for each API:

Input-related monitoring data. This can include counts of requests received or work polled from queues/streams, request byte size percentiles, and authentication/authorization failure counts.
Processing-related monitoring data. This can include multi-modal business logic path/branch execution counts, backend microservice request counts/failure/latency percentiles, fault and error log output, and request trace data.
Output-related monitoring data. This can include response type counts (with breakdowns for error/fault responses by customer), size of responses, and percentiles for time-to-write first response byte and time-to-write complete response.
In general, we aim to keep these customer experience and system-level dashboards as high level as possible. We deliberately avoid the temptation to add too many metrics to these dashboards because information overload can distract from the core message that these dashboards need to convey.

"Perfect Handstands

A close friend recently decided to learn to do a perfect free-standing handstand. No leaning against a wall. Not for just a few seconds. Instagram good. She decided to start her journey by taking a handstand workshop at her yoga studio. She then practiced for a while but wasn’t getting the results she wanted. So, she hired a handstand coach. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, but evidently this is an actual thing that exists. In the very first lesson, the coach gave her some wonderful advice. “Most people,” he said, “think that if they work hard, they should be able to master a handstand in about two weeks. The reality is that it takes about six months of daily practice. If you think you should be able to do it in two weeks, you’re just going to end up quitting.” Unrealistic beliefs on scope – often hidden and undiscussed – kill high standards. To achieve high standards yourself or as part of a team, you need to form and proactively communicate realistic beliefs about how hard something is going to be – something this coach understood well."

"With the agreement between Eucalyptus and Amazon to cooperate on ensuring API fidelity between the two technologies comes the question of defining what it means for two independent implementations to support the same API. The API itself consists of a large number of different "commands" or "service requests," each of which triggers many different operations within the system that are visible to the user. Moreover, the API makes specific assumptions about "things" (VMs, storage volumes, network addresses, etc.) it is defining and manipulating. Launching two different VMs with different network and storage characteristics through the identical API call doesn't capture fidelity.

Thus, API fidelity measures three dimensions of compatibility in the interface "calls" it implements:

the calls and parameterizations of each call
the actionable responses generated by each call
the similarity between the objects manipulated by each call"

Disruption occurs given two criteria. The first: that incumbents move upmarket to the most profitable segments, ignoring low-end competitors at the bottom of the market. The second: that the low-end competitor introduces a product with a scalable technology or business model advantage at its core that has the potential to displace the incumbent.

This is exactly what Amazon has with the Kindle Fire. It's not just a low-end competitor to the iPad. There is scalable technology at its core that the present-generation iPad lacks — the extensive use of the Cloud. That is why Amazon can get away with shipping a device that has only 8GB of memory. What's more, the Fire has a business model advantage too — Amazon is using content to subsidize the hardware.
