He had themed it around respect for people's differences, and had planned his own coming out as gay as part of the speech. The principal of the school told him to remove that part of the speech but Young refused, leading the school to cancel his speech and _not even recognize Young as a valedictorian_. The school's board of directors said in a statement that graduation was "not a time for a student to use his commencement speech to push his personal agenda on a captive audience, and school officials are well within their rights to prevent that from happening."

As if this story couldn't get worse, Young hadn't even yet come out to his own parents. So instead of getting to do that on his own terms, the principal outed him on a phone call to his parents. Thankfully, they seem to have taken the news well and have turned their attention to the unfairness of their son not being able to speak or be recognized as valedictorian. Sometimes there's no distinction between the standards and curriculum, or a misunderstanding about the adoption and implementation process, or decontextualized simplifications (or fabrications) of the standards that make them look silly. So hats off to Eric Gorski of The Denver Post for this great 3-part series looking at Common Core implementation in Denver area schools.

If you could pan this picture another quarter mile or so to the right, you'd be looking at the home I owned when I first moved to Colorado. I lived next to Supermax, America's highest-security prison. We send some criminals to prison to be rehabilitated. Others we send to be punished. The prisoners we send to Supermax go because, as a society, we largely want them to be forgotten. Many have done such notorious and heinous things we'd prefer to never think of them again, so we send them to ADX Florence.

Sadly, some of the prisoners who end up out-of-sight and out-of-mind at Supermax go out of their own minds, mentally tortured by the harsh conditions and treatment. This New York Times Magazine article describes the struggle by some to fight for the human rights of these prisoners and how the Federal Bureau of Prisons has taken some steps to improve conditions and get better at recognizing and treating prisoners' mental illnesses. As someone who taught the children of numerous prison employees, prison conditions are not very healthy for the guards, either, as there's a lot of baggage to deal with even after you've clocked out and gone home to your family.

I've seen Derek in action long enough to know that he's not afraid to take a stand when he knows the evidence is on his side. But when it comes to PARCC, however, Derek knows that most of the evidence is yet to be collected. I'd love to see other kinds of score representations, like histograms showing the distribution of scores, but I'm pretty sure cut scores are baked into NCLB reporting requirements. Stories like this are a reminder that it's not the *test* that's potentially invalid, it's the *inferences* we make about the test that we have to worry about. There may not be right and wrong places to put cut scores, but some choices would be more sensible than others, and those choices do influence how people interpret scores. In Colorado, some programs were made to look worse than they likely are because NCTQ either collected incomplete data or misreported the data they had. Another reason that NCTQ rubs academics the wrong was is tactical - instead of peer-reviewed journals, NCTQ relies on self-published reports accompanies by a massive PR campaign to get their rankings in the hands of journalists who are more than happy to pass it along to the public.

The National Center on Teacher Quality evaluated more than 1,100 teacher education programs using data like course syllabi and program requirements. This has apparently led to a rather weak analysis (like you'd expect if you only judge restaurants from their menus), as many are now pointing out. Linda Darling-Hammond pointed out some of the missing data (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2013/06/18/why-the-nctq-teacher-prep-ratings-are-nonsense/), which prompted a NCTQ reply (http://www.nctq.org/commentary/viewStory.do?id=33665) and another reply from Darling-Hammond (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2013/06/20/problems-with-new-ratings-of-teachers-colleges-point-by-point/). Essentially, it's very unclear that NCTQ has enough data to evaluate programs, and in at least one case, it seems NCTQ evaluated a program that doesn't exist at the school they say it does.

Bruce Baker points out some hypocrisy in the report (http://schoolfinance101.wordpress.com/2013/06/18/the-central-hypocrisy-of-the-nctq-teacher-prep-institution-ratings/): NCTQ says teacher quality is the key to student achievement, yet did nothing to evaluate the quality of the teacher educators that prepare new teachers. Ed Fuller broke down the report as well at http://fullerlook.wordpress.com/2013/06/17/nctq-ranking-of-teacher-prep-programs-gets-an-f/, and the AACTE has something to say, too: https://secure.aacte.org/apps/rl/resource.php?resid=272&ref=rl.

EdNews Colorado looked at the Colorado results (http://www.ednewscolorado.org/news/new-report-ranks-colorado-teacher-training-programs-poorly) and got some local reactions, including one from the Dean of the School of Education at UC-Denver, who pointed out that NCTQ gave them a zero for student teaching, claiming they don't have it, when in fact UC-Denver is one of the 5% of teacher prep programs nationally that require a full-year of student teaching (http://www.ednewscolorado.org/voices/voices-the-problem-with-the-new-teacher-education-program-ratings).

CU-Boulder professor Al Bartlett (http://www.albartlett.org/) has given his "Arithmetic, Population, and Energy" lecture over 1600 times, and the mathematical theme driving the lecture is humankind's difficulty in grasping the consequences of exponential growth. In order to spread Bartlett's lecture more widely, the CU Environmental Center will be giving a full-day training to those who wish to give the lecture themselves. Details and links to application materials can be found at http://ecenter.colorado.edu/energy-climate/Population-Conversation.

I think the current model for paying teachers, one based on experience and credits earned, is unfair. (I've touched on this before at http://blog.mathed.net/2010/03/taking-salary-schedule-beyond-two.html.) The thing is, I'm not sure most merit pay models are any more fair, and I'd rather work in a system with an unfair system that teachers agree with than an unfair system they hate. Douglas County, Colorado, will be experimenting with a market-based approach to paying teachers, and some teachers don't sound happy about it.

The air tankers and helicopters that fight these fires are important tools, but safe aircraft under contract with the Forest Service is in short supply, as this +The Denver Post article explains:

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_23474790/national-shortage-large-air-tankers-constrains-firefighting-efforts

There used to be far more tankers in the arsenal, but accidents (see: wings fall off of massive airplane(must see)) have led to more safety standards, and thus fewer planes, many of which are still decades old.

While aircraft capture a lot of media attention, we can't forget that it's firefighters on the ground that are doing to difficult work of structure protection and containment, eventually making sure the fire is out cold. We don't usually see this part of the effort, but the video here does a great job showing how firefighters burn away the fuels around a house then extinguish the flames to protect the house from an oncoming wildfire. It's tough, dangerous work.
