As someone with the title of "math specialist," we are looked to for answers. Which is great! That's why we're here. But it's hard sometimes to not always reply with, "It's actually more complicated than you think, and here's why." So it's affirming to hear these two scholars face similar questions and also admit how complicated the work is. They're not saying it's impossible, or hopeless, but it's complicated. It's okay to acknowledge this and preferable to ignoring it and adopting over-simplified solutions.

After being somewhat dormant for a few years, it appears that the math wars are flaring up again. This time, it's California's new math framework that is getting people riled up. As I understand it from the parts of the framework I've read (it's about 900 pages, forgive me for not having read it all!) and the people I've talked to, the state is recommending (not requiring) schools to wait until high school before giving students options to accelerate onto a calculus pathway. Many of the people pushing against this seem to think acceleration and calculus are being taken away entirely, or perhaps they're just convinced that middle school is the right time to accelerate students and decide if they're candidates for calculus. There are other issues here, too, most of which are familiar to anyone who has followed the math wars the past, oh, 60 years or so. This article does a better-than-average job explaining the disagreement.

There's a possibility that the results they're seeing are caused by confounding variables, but I think one thing is likely: "deeper learning" is well-poised to be a new buzzword in education, even though most people using it won't know what makes it special.

In many of the references I've heard to growth mindset, the message was simple: If kids can believe they can get better at something, then that goes a long way towards it happening. So make kids believe they can achieve anything, because that's how growth mindset works. Not so simple, says Dweck. We really need to be honest with students about the work involved in reaching goals, inform them about the pathways that might get them there, and avoid filling them with false hope.

This is a great rebound from last year, when Peters looked flat at the NCAA tournament. I suspected that he struggled to make weight last year and thought for sure he'd move up, but he stayed at 125 this year and managed to make the weight with the knee brace. He'll need about 6 months of rehab and it will be interesting to see if he's ready to go again at 125 next season.
