A great way to catch the attention of a visitor to your website is a “splash screen” or an “intro screen”. However, making a successful one is very difficult for one simple reason: splash screens easily irritate users.
Splash screens can work if they appear quickly and are easily dismissible. They can be visually striking, and beautiful, and make the user want to scroll to learn more. This style of intros work very well on single-page scrolling websites. Or the ‘banner style’ of webdesign that has come into fashion with the flat design trend. It can also be very useful to make a nice looking “background video” style of intro which are also all-the-rage at the moment.

A Complete Guide to Flexbox | CSS-Tricks

The Flexbox Layout (Flexible Box) module (currently a W3C Candidate Recommendation) aims at providing a more efficient way to lay out, align and distribute space among items in a container, even when their size is unknown and/or dynamic (thus the word "flex").

The main idea behind the flex layout is to give the container the ability to alter its items' width/height (and order) to best fill the available space (mostly to accommodate to all kind of display devices and screen sizes). A flex container expands items to fill available free space, or shrinks them to prevent overflow.

Most importantly, the flexbox layout is direction-agnostic as opposed to the regular layouts (block which is vertically-based and inline which is horizontally-based). While those work well for pages, they lack flexibility (no pun intended) to support large or complex applications (especially when it comes to orientation changing, resizing, stretching, shrinking, etc.).

Note: Flexbox layout is most appropriate to the components of an application, and small-scale layouts, while the Grid layout is intended for larger scale layouts

A transition is simply an animation from one set of CSS properties to another. So for example; whilst before you may have had links with blue text, which suddenly turned orange when you hovered on them, you would now replace that sudden jump with a more graceful animation.

In this post, we’ll look at the basic syntax, step through some examples, and finally take a brief look at current browser support.

In fact, the CSS Working Group, which oversees the CSS specification at the W3C, is cranking out draft specs of new features all the time — the monolithic “3.0″ or “4.0″ versioning was tossed out after CSS 2.1. Instead new features are developed as “modules” so that, for example, the Selector Module can be published without waiting for the Layout Module.
